Wrestlers Qualify for Regionals

7 of the 14 Garrett Wrestlers qualified for the next round of the IHSAA Tournament by finishing in the top four of the Carroll Sectional.

Garrett Champions were Hayden Lee (30-0) in the 103lbs. weight class and Brayden Moreau (34-1) in the 130lbs. weight class.

Garrett had two Sectional Runner-ups:

Other Regional Qualifiers:

Augie Novy 119lbs.

Austin Gibson 189lbs.

The team finished sectional in 4th place of a tight battle with Leo, Dwenger, and Whitko. But at this point in the season it is all about advancing kids in the tournament. Coach Fielden and his staff have done a great job preparing this young team.

The Regional Tournament is also at Carroll High School next Saturday. Good Luck Matmen!

ACAC Champs Part II

Congratulations to the Lady Railroaders for winning another ACAC Championship. This time the Lady Railroaders ran the table going undefeated in the conference. The girls defeated Heritage tonight to finish the ACAC season 7-0. We also honored our senior girls, Megan Getts, Heather House, Jessica LaTurner, and Kelly Singleton. We are so proud of these girls and their contributions to Railroader Basketball.

Out scored but not Out played!

The Railroaders suffered a tough loss at home tonight against a very good Bluffton Tiger team. The final score was 52-46.  This team is getting better in leaps and bounds. On Tuesday we got a very slow start and had to come back against a good New Haven team. Tonight we proved that we could learn from our mistakes and came out playing hard from the opening tip.  Bluffton definitely out-scored us, but they didn't out-play us.

We out rebounded them 26-23 (8-1 on offensive rebounds). We had more blocks and steals (8-6), fewer turnovers (8-11), and we had 12 assists to their 9. I have to say we out hustled the Tigers on both ends of the court. But we just didn't knock down the shots when we needed them. We were on 1-6 at the Free Throw Line. They were 8-9. We shot 28% from the three point line, they shot 50%. We were 20 of 48 from the field. They were 19 of 37.  We played a good game against a good team and a storied program. We are young but are playing harder. We are getting better. Keep rolling Big Train! Take these next few weeks to prepare for Sectionals. We can achieve that goal!

County Champs!

Garrett became Dekalb County Champs tonight by defeating Eastside tonight by a score of 64-58. Ok, there is no OFFICIAL Championship but we defeated all three Dekalb County teams this year. Dekalb, Lakewood Park, and now Eastside. The Blazers gave us everything they had tonight but the Lady Railroaders got a big game from Jordyn Knott, Heather House, and Brandi Dawson. Jordyn led the Lady Railroader scoring with 17 points. Heather House added 16 points, and freshman Brandi Dawson added 15. The Lady Blazers had no match for Jordyn's great athletic ability. She had a reverse layup that was outstanding. "Digger" said he taught her everything she knows!

The Garrett defense was just too much for Eastside who was held to just 42% shooting from the field. Laura Moynahan had some great minutes when Megan had to go out because of foul trouble. She was a key to the defense and no one plays as hard as she does when she's in the game.

The regular season is winding down with just two more games. Then comes the fun part. The IHSAA tournament draw is Sunday and the tournament at Prairie Heights will start on Tuesday night, February 8th.

Great Half game!

You don't get any recognition for winning a half game! However, you have to give credit to our Railroader Basketball team after getting down 29-12 at halftime They came back to win the second half 36-26.  What a great turn around. But, it was too little too late. We have shown quite a bit of character over the last few games as our team is competing for a full 32 minutes. We are not giving up when we get down early in a game. We are continuing to fight and find ways to scrap back.  Coach Bodey has been turning up the pressure and it is not always comfortable for our players. But, we are getting better.  Good Job tonight Railroaders. Now bring on the Tigers!

The boys will host the Bluffton Tigers on Friday night. The JV and C-teams will play at 6pm. The varsity game will begin at approximately 7:30pm.

The girls will host Heritage on Saturday. This is Senior Night for the Girls and we will honor Megan Getts, Heather House, Kelly Singleton, and Jessica LaTurner for all their hard work as they head down the home stretch of their careers at GHS!

The wrestlers are heading into the tournament this weekend as they compete at the wrestling sectional at Carroll High School. The first round begins at 8:00am. The second session is scheduled to begin at 10:30am and the Championship round is scheduled for 12noon.  Good Luck Coach Fielden and the wrestlers.

Go Railroaders!

What a great night for Garrett High School. The Lady Railroaders won another key ACAC game by defeating the Lady Raiders of Southern Wells 49-25. Jordyn Knott had a stellar game with 18 points. The tough defense held Southern Wells to just 26% shooting from the field.  The Lady Railroaders are just one victory away from capturing all the hardware in the ACAC this year.

The Boys team gave us a little excitement at the end of the game but came away from the night with another ACAC victory defeating Southern Wells 67-66. Four Railroaders were in double figures shooting for the night. The team was led by Drake Landes with 21 points. But, Andrew Johnson had a career night knocking down 16 points in the game. Andrew hit 5 of 6 from behind the three point arc and played with passion and determination.  (He might have had some inspiration from Grandpa Jack returning to the Paul Bateman gym tonight!) Quentin Fiandt had 13 points and Eric Custer had 10 points for the night. Brandon Porter had 10 of the teams 19 assists. What a great stat for a team who is learning to play together as a team as the season progresses.

The Garrett Community did a great job tonight coming out to support St. Martins Health Clinic. The Spaghetti Dinner, Bake Sale, and fundraising effort was a great success. We are so proud of Tammy Stafford and what she has and her volunteer staff have done to serve our community.

The season continues next week with the New Haven make up game (boys) to be played in Garrett this coming Tuesday night. The Boys will host the Bluffton Tigers on Friday Night and the girls will host the Heritage Lady Patriots Saturday night. Saturday night is Senior Night where we get to honor our girls seniors and their parents.  The season is winding down. But, the excitement is building!

Great Win!

The Railroader Basketball team got a big road win tonight at South Adams. This was a see-saw game with the railroaders being down several times by 7 or more points. Yet, the team really kept there cool and battled back to get a 56-53 victory against the Starfires.

The team had great balance in scoring tonight led by sophomore Drake Landes with 18 points. Quentin Fiandt added 14 points and Todd Frickey added 12. Other scorers were Eric Custer with 8 points and Brandon Porter with 4 points. Brandon Porter is growing in his Point Guard role getting 7 assists tonight. The defense was good enough and the offense was spread out. All-in-all a good night for GHS!

Cancellation and Hoopin' It up for Health Care!

The Athletic Department had a very busy day canceling tonight's Varsity and JV Basketball games with New Haven. School was cancelled this morning due to icing on secondary roads. Even though the main roads were just wet most of the day, the temperature was expected to drop and cause additional icing tonight. After consultation with the coaches and administration at New Haven and Garrett, it was decided to postpone the game tonight. Both schools will get together to find a good reschedule date and the new date will be announced soon.

The Garrett Boys will travel to South Adams on Friday night and then will host Southern Wells on Saturday night at the Bateman gym. The game Saturday Night will be a part of a Varsity/JV Boys and Girls Doubleheader.  The JV Girls and Boys games will be played at 5pm. The JV Boys will play in the Middle School gym and the JV Girls will play in the Bateman Gym. The Varsity Girls game will begin at approximately 6:30pm in the Bateman Gym and the Varsity Boys will finish the night with a projected tip-off at approximately 8pm.

We will  be raising money for St. Martins Health Clinic in Garrett on Saturday Night. A Spaghetti supper will be held starting at 4pm and concluding at 7pm or when sold out. We will also host a Bake Sale and take collections during both the Boys and Girls Varsity Games. Come out and "Hoop it up for Health Care" this Saturday Night!

AMAZING!!!!!!!

What an amazing ACAC Championship game today at the Memorial Coliseum! Jordyn Knott gets an offensive rebound and buries a shot to take away another ACAC Championship from the Leo Lady Lions. The Lions came back from being down by 10 points to go ahead at the end of the ball game. Garrett brought down the ball and with 4.6 seconds left called a time out. Coach Dan Feagler tried to get the Ball to Megan Getts (tournament MVP) who had dominated the inside all day. She made a great shot but missed. Jordyn got the board and put it in with no time left on the clock. 5 hours later, my heart has finally started again.

The Railroaders took home all the hardware from the tournament. Megan Getts took home the MVP award with a very impressive performance. The Railroader Fans took home the Sportsmanship Award. For those who wonder how these awards are determined, the conference has two different committees of administrators to vote. The Athletic Directors and Principals of the two schools are not included in the voting. For the MVP stats are accumulated for all 3 games and reviewed by the committee. Stats are compared and then weight is given to the person who had the most impact in the success of their team. The Sportsmanship award is given for the school who most positively supported their team during the tournament semi-finals and championship games. If a team gets a technical foul or unsportsmanlike conduct, they are eliminated from consideration.

So............ Congratulations to all the Railroaders..........including the Fans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wrestlers Senior Night -- Success

The Garrett Mat men defended the Home Mat by defeating Heritage in the final ACAC match of the year and the final Home match for the Railroaders.  Seniors Logan Lee, Matt Schultz, Chris Hunkler, and Eric McCrumb were honored before the match.

The Railroader faithful came out in large numbers tonight to support the Wrestlers in a Prime Time Friday Night Showcase.  Coach Fielden and his staff have done a great job molding this team and were impressive tonight in their toughness and determination.

The Wrestlers travel to Bishop Dwenger tomorrow and then the season winds down next Wednesday Night at Columbia City. The team travels to Woodlan for the ACAC tournament next Saturday. The Tournament is to be held at Woodlan High School beginning at 9am.  Good Luck wrestlers!

Mayhem!

I just got through watching another All-State commercial with "Mayhem" I think I recognize mayhem and we have been visited by mayhem.

The weather has forced cancellation of the first round of the ACAC Boys and Girls Basketball Tournament. The schedule of tonight's games at 8 sights across Allen and Adams County has been moved to tomorrow night. The schedules will be the same as tonight. The Boys will play the 6pn game followed by the girls game at approximately 7:45.  That's the easy part.

The next part of the "Mayhem" is in the rest of the games. A schedule will be discussed tomorrow and you will be notified of those changes when ever I know!

We don't need anymore Mayhem!

ACAC Week

This is such a great but busy week for the ACAC.

Tomorrow night we start off the week with a little C-Team Basketball  vs the East Noble Knights. The games will be played in the Ober Gym and start with the girls playing at 6pm followed by the boys at approximately 7:15pm.

Then the ACAC Basketball Tournament Tips off for both the Boys and Girls Basketball teams at Heritage High School.  The games will be held on Tuesday Night. The BOYS PLAY THE FIRST GAME. The reason for the backward game schedule is simple. The Boys Semi-Final games are at the Memorial Coliseum on Wednesday night and the early game enables them to get home a little earlier to get more rest.
SO, the Boys game at Heritage will begin at 6pm followed by the Girls game at approximately 7:30pm.

The Girls Semi-Final games will be on Thursday. WHEN we win the first game, both the Boys and Girls would play the LATE game at the Coliseum. The Boys would play the winner of South Adams/Woodlan at approx. 7:45pm on Wednesday. The Girls would play on Thursday at approx. 7:45pm.

The Wrestlers will Host the Heritage Patriots in the final ACAC regular season match of the year. This is also senior night for our Boys Wrestlers. The jv matches will begin at 6:30pm.

The Championship games of the ACAC will be held on Saturday Morning. The Girls Championship will begin at 10am and the Boys game will follow at approximately Noon.  The cost for entry to each of the ACAC games is $5.  This is the oldest tournament in the State and we look forward to another Railroader Championship run!  Good Luck to Both the Boys and Girls!

Offense/Defense

Ok, I am a defensive guy. I love to watch a good defensive battle in Football, Basketball, and Baseball. The old saying goes "Defense wins Championships". So in High School Basketball if you hold a team to 46 points you are normally in the game. However, The Jets proved tonight that you do eventually have to score to win as they defeated the Railroaders 46-26 in ACAC action in Garrett.

We only turned the ball over 8 times while forcing AC to 13 turnovers. We made 9 free throws while Adams Central only had two shots the entire game. (I guess we can't blame the officials.) The biggest reason for the loss is we got destroyed in rebounds. AC grabbed 27 rebounds, 12 of those offensive rebounds to Garretts 9 total rebounds.

Offensively Garrett shot only 17% from 3 point range and only 33% from the field. We couldn't buy a bucket.  Garrett played a more controlled game tonight and I think it helped us defensively. But, we are going to have to find more ways to score.  Keep your heads up Railroaders, learn from every game and  focus on the ACAC tournament!

ROLL BIG TRAIN!
