After 2 rough games that ended in losses, the Lady Railroaders turned it around tonight in convincing fashion getting it's first ACAC win of the season against Woodlan. The final score was 52-36. But, the score doesn't speak to the dominance of Garrett over Woodlan. The first quarter score says a whole lot more. At the end of the 1st quarter was 24-6. The great defense and potent offense could have scored 100 points. But, Coach Lapadot and his staff used the entire bench for the rest of the game and worked on increasing his bench strength for the future. It is important to note the Lady Warriors have been a great offensive team so far this year, but our defense was just too much for them. They had 14 turnovers and shot only 22% from the field for the game. The Railroaders shot 47% from the field and 73% from the Free Throw line in a good offensive effort. Brandi Dawson once again led the Railroaders with 22 points. Jordyn Knott contributed 10 points and Katie DePew had 7 assists with her 6 points.
The Ladies will host Prairie Heights next Tuesday Night and the Boys host Prairie Heights tomorrow night. Good Luck Teams!

Can't keep a good man down!
I know the players win and lose the games. I have never heard a coach get a hit, score a run, strike out a batter, or make a great defensive play. But, I have to give Coach Bishop a "gold star" for today! Coach Bishop is struggling with severe back pain that doesn't allow him to get any sleep. The our girls softball team scores 4 runs early in game 1 of our tournament, only to lose the game in 8 innings. Then he gets a nice comfortable lead in the consolation game. Then he gets drilled by a ball, WHERE? In his back! Does he complain, does he stop coaching? NO. What a great example for our kids. He has had some really tough losses this year and doesn't give up. I can't be prouder of his coaching and his coaching staff. They are working hard to get the best out of our kids! He challenges them and never gives up! Thanks Coach!

GHS WINNERS!
Tonight was a great night for GHS sports. The Girls track team won 14 out of 15 events against the Central Noble Lady Cougars. The Lady Railroaders end the regular season with a 5-2 record. Jordyn Knott won 4 events. Heather House, Ariel McCoy, and Laura Moynahan won 2 events. Kaitlyn Hinkle and Brandy Dawson won 1 event each. We won all 3 relays and won by a final score of 84-39.
The Boys won by a final score of 70-62. Drake Landes won the 300 hurdles and 2nd in the 110 hurdles, and 1st in the long jump. Todd Frickey was 1st in the 100, 200, and 4x100 relay. Jamrius was on the winning 4x100 relay and got 2nd in the 100 and 200. Kendal Slabaugh was 1st in the 1600 and 2nd in the 800. Jordan Lantz won the 3200 and Connor Foster got 2nd. Deventer and Schlutz were 1 and 2 in the Discus.

The Boys Baseball team, just like Softball, came from behind to defeat Bluffton. The Railroaders got down 2-0 in the first inning, came back to make it 2-1. Then Bluffton, then scored 3 more runs to make it 5-1. However, the Railroaders fought back and won the game 6-5 in the bottom of the 6th. I was so impressed with the fight of this team. We had some great base running when we needed it and got a great defensive play in the top of the 7th. A ball was hit deep to right field with a runner on 2nd. Andrew Johnson through to Kylan LaMotte (the cut-off) who then through home to Porter to tag the runner out at home. What a great play!
I am always proud of our teams, but I always get excited when we fight even after we get down in a game or coantest. Great Work Teams!

Another ACAC victory for Softball
The softball team got another ACAC victory tonight at South Adams, shutting out the Starfires 10-0 in 7 innings. Kourtney Holiday earned the victory on the mound and at the plate. She led the team with 3 hits and had 2 RBIs. Alexis Metzger, Katie Depew, and Jessica Laturner each had 2 hits.

Double the Fun!
Tonight the Softball and Baseball teams had some fun at the expense of a potential Sectional Opponent. The Girls took 8 innings but they defeated Churubusco by a score of 5-4. Garrett led most of the game 3-1. In the top of the 7th inning the Lady Eagles came back and tied the game 4-4. Both teams had plenty of opportunities to win the game, but it was the Lady Railroaders who came through in the bottom of the 8th with the "W". Coach Bishop lost a few more hairs tonight. (He doesn't have many to lose!) But we are proud of how this team competes!
The Boys dominated Central Noble (Last years Sectional Champions). The final score was 7-1. Noah Follet got the win. But, Coach Mireles worked his young pitchers to get the win and Weber came in to close it out in the 7th.
Both teams travel to South Adams tomorrow for another ACAC match-up. Good Luck teams!

ACAC Split
The Softball team fell to Adams Central tonight in their 3rd ACAC game of the season. The final score was 6-2. The game was close early. Then the Railroaders couldn't fight their way back after a bad 5th inning.
Coach Bishop's comments: The game was pretty well played overall
The Baseball team had an impressive night defeating Adams Central 11-1 in 5 innings. Kylan LaMotte had a complete game. He worked through Adams Central's line-up forcing the Jets to leave runners stranded on 3rd base on several occasions. The Railroader bats came to life tonight. We put the ball in play nearly every inning. We even hit the umpire with a shot up the middle early in the game. The game was a great effort.
Thanks to all the fans who came out tonight in less than spectacular weather conditions. But, we were able to get the conference games in which is so important this time of year. Thanks to John Bennett, Coach Bishop, and Coach Andrews for their hard work getting the softball diamond ready to play. Thanks to John, Coach Mireles, and the baseball team for getting the Baseball field ready to play.
As far as I'm concerned we have officially had enough rain!

but both teams did commit and error which lead to an unearned run for each
team. We are not hitting the ball in key situations and were not going to win many
getting 4 hits a game and stranding runners. Adams Central had a big 5th inning
getting 4 runs on 5 hits including 2 doubles and a triple finding the gaps. Our bunt
coverage needs to improve along with the players reading the game themselves
and thats in part to our lack of expierence. We need to regroup a little and start
playing to our capabilities and everything would fall in place.

Sunshine on the Railroaders!
I'm just starting to get some results from todays Activities for the Railroader SPring Teams.
The Girls Track team ran at Churubusco and did a great job competing. The team got 2nd in the Black Division getting beat by the host Lady Eagles. JOrdyn Knott continued her winning by earning 40 points winning the 200m, 400m, High Jump, and Long Jump. Wow! Laura Moynahan had a great day throwing 106 feet in the Discus and placing 3rd. She also placed 3rd in Shot Put. Ariel McCoy placed in both the 1600m and 3200m. Kaitlin Hinkle placed in the 800m. All the 3 relays placed. Great work Runners and Coaches!
The Baseball team split with East Noble today. The Railroaders won the first game 8-7 . Kylan LaMotte got the win and James Weber got the save. Brandon Porter was 3 of 4. He scored 3 runs, had 2 doubles, and 4 stolen bases. Great outing Railroaders.
In the 2nd game, the Railroaders fell by a score of 8-3. The Railroaders could only muster 4 hits (Shawn Lacey, Brandon Porter, Andrew Robinson, and Tyler Barrientes). Brandon Porter was tagged with the loss. But, Andrew Robinson and Noah Follet pitched 4 innings of shut out baseball for the railroaders.
The only information I have about Softball is The Lady Railroaders defeated Eastside in the first game and were losing to Dekalb in the 2nd game in the bottom of the 7th. When I get more information, I will let you know!

We're growing up!
Well we couldn't get a hit last night. But, tonight we really did a great job putting the ball in play. We fought against a tough Carroll Charger team tonight at Denny Feagler Field. The Chargers scored first in the first inning and then the Lady Railroaders scored to tie things up. For the next 6 innings the Chargers controlled the game even though Garrett hit the ball hard. They didn't dominate but were good enough to build a 3-1 lead. Both Katie Depew and Rachel Stafford had well hit balls that were snagged in desperation and then plays were made to pick off Garrett Runners. Hannah McCoy made a great catch in Center field and threw the ball with confidence to Home plate with perfect accuracy. Even though we didn't get the out, we did everything right on that play. Our young team is starting to play better. We still had a few errors that need eliminated but we are improving.
In the bottom of the 7th Garrett loaded the bases with no outs. A grounder was hit to third base, the play was at home, but the catcher mishandled the ball and we scored. Now it's 3-2. Next batter, same situation, bases loaded, ball hit to third, exact same result. But, this time the ball goes to the backstop and 2 runs score. Game over!
Good Job Ladies! You deserved the win because of your effort! I am sure we'll have a few more bumps in the road, but we are making progress.

Are you Proud to be a Railroader?....................... YES, WE ARE!
Well, two of our Winter Sports Programs are finished for the season.
Brayden Moreau lost in the opening round of the IHSAA wrestling state meet. He got an early lead 2-0, then got behind and couldn't recover. We are so proud of Brayden and his contribution to our wrestling program. We can't wait to see what he does next year. Coach Fielden and Caprino have done so much for a floundering program. They get so much out of our wrestlers while maintaining a very high standard of character and ethics. THey are building a program and we are proud of them also.
The Girls Basketball team lost a hard fought defensive battle at Culver this morning. Garrett took an early lead and really out played Fairfield in the first half. But, the defense of both teams was tougher in the second half and the Lady Falcons inched ahead in the 4th quarter. Garrett had chances down the stretch with under a minute and couldn't convert.
We are so proud of this team and especially our seniors. These girls have made a major impact on Garrett Athletics in their four years. Heather House is such a great example for all of our students. She has the type of attitude and work ethic that you want everyone to have. Megan Getts has played so hard throughout her four years and has stepped it up even more in the tournament. She has been so focused. Kelly Singleton has done everything she has been asked to do. Jessica LaTurner has been so key in her support role. She also has contributed as she has been called on and never complained. While the seniors made their mark. The rest of the team are also the best. They are great in the classroom and coachable. I mean this from the c-team players all the way through the seniors. We hope for the best and know that even moving up a class next year won't be a challenge to great for you!
Our Coaching Staff of Bob Lapadot, Lindsay Weller, Kraig Kelham and support from Butch Olver are the best girls basketball coaching staff in Northeast Indiana. No questions! What can you say about Dan Feagler? He coaches with such passion and transfers that to his team. He is such a great example of dedication and leadership. I have had the fortune of seeing him throughout his career and there is no one who works harder for our girls at GHS. Thanks Coaches for all your time and effort. Take some much deserved time off. We love you and thank you!

Rumblin', Bumblin', Stumblin'
We might have stumbled out of the gate (ask Becca!) but the Lady Railroaders dominated the entire 32 minutes of the IHSAA Sectional Semi-Final game against Central Noble. The game was never in question and the final score of 65-24 says it all. Megan Getts, Brandi Dawson, and Jordyn Knott dominated the scoring with 19, 13, and 10 points each. Garrett had the best shooting percentage, the best free throw percentage, the most assists, rebounds, steals, and blocks. They committed fewer fouls and had fewer turnovers. Great game Ladies! Now take it to the Lady Eagles of Churubusco to bring home another Sectional Title.
The game will be played at Prairie Heights and will start at 7:30pm. Good Luck Lady Railroaders, Roll Big Train!

32-33 turns to 55-33
Eastside Lady Blazers always give us fits. They are a hard nosed basketball team with a very talented leader in, Megan Strock. Through 3/4ths of tonight's sectional match up, that hard nosed basketball continued. Then the Lady Railroaders took over! Our girls got down 32-33 at the end of the 3rd quarter, then we went on a 23-0 run to win the game easily by a score of 55-33.
The last quarter was one of the best quarters of basketball we have played all year. Katie DePew had the daunting task of guarding Strock. It was one of the most physical one on one battles I have ever seen. The pushing and shoving on both sides was classic. But in the end, Katie prevailed. She definitely frustrated Megan and never let her get in to any kind of rhythm.
I don't have all the scoring stats yet. But, the Lady Railroaders advance to Friday Night's semi-finals to face the Central Noble Lady Cougars. The game will start at about 7:30pm at Prairie Heights. Good Luck Ladies and Coaches!

County Champs!
Garrett became Dekalb County Champs tonight by defeating Eastside tonight by a score of 64-58. Ok, there is no OFFICIAL Championship but we defeated all three Dekalb County teams this year. Dekalb, Lakewood Park, and now Eastside. The Blazers gave us everything they had tonight but the Lady Railroaders got a big game from Jordyn Knott, Heather House, and Brandi Dawson. Jordyn led the Lady Railroader scoring with 17 points. Heather House added 16 points, and freshman Brandi Dawson added 15. The Lady Blazers had no match for Jordyn's great athletic ability. She had a reverse layup that was outstanding. "Digger" said he taught her everything she knows!
The Garrett defense was just too much for Eastside who was held to just 42% shooting from the field. Laura Moynahan had some great minutes when Megan had to go out because of foul trouble. She was a key to the defense and no one plays as hard as she does when she's in the game.

Go Railroaders!
What a great night for Garrett High School. The Lady Railroaders won another key ACAC game by defeating the Lady Raiders of Southern Wells 49-25. Jordyn Knott had a stellar game with 18 points. The tough defense held Southern Wells to just 26% shooting from the field. The Lady Railroaders are just one victory away from capturing all the hardware in the ACAC this year.
The Boys team gave us a little excitement at the end of the game but came away from the night with another ACAC victory defeating Southern Wells 67-66. Four Railroaders were in double figures shooting for the night. The team was led by Drake Landes with 21 points. But, Andrew Johnson had a career night knocking down 16 points in the game. Andrew hit 5 of 6 from behind the three point arc and played with passion and determination. (He might have had some inspiration from Grandpa Jack returning to the Paul Bateman gym tonight!) Quentin Fiandt had 13 points and Eric Custer had 10 points for the night. Brandon Porter had 10 of the teams 19 assists. What a great stat for a team who is learning to play together as a team as the season progresses.
The Garrett Community did a great job tonight coming out to support St. Martins Health Clinic. The Spaghetti Dinner, Bake Sale, and fundraising effort was a great success. We are so proud of Tammy Stafford and what she has and her volunteer staff have done to serve our community.

The Boys will host the Bluffton Tigers on Friday Night and the girls will host the Heritage Lady Patriots Saturday night. ACAC Week
This is such a great but busy week for the ACAC.
Tomorrow night we start off the week with a little C-Team Basketball vs the East Noble Knights. The games will be played in the Ober Gym and start with the girls playing at 6pm followed by the boys at approximately 7:15pm.
Then the ACAC Basketball Tournament Tips off for both the Boys and Girls Basketball teams at Heritage High School. The games will be held on Tuesday Night. The BOYS PLAY THE FIRST GAME. The reason for the backward game schedule is simple. The Boys Semi-Final games are at the Memorial Coliseum on Wednesday night and the early game enables them to get home a little earlier to get more rest.
SO, the Boys game at Heritage will begin at 6pm followed by the Girls game at approximately 7:30pm.
The Girls Semi-Final games will be on Thursday. WHEN we win the first game, both the Boys and Girls would play the LATE game at the Coliseum. The Boys would play the winner of South Adams/Woodlan at approx. 7:45pm on Wednesday. The Girls would play on Thursday at approx. 7:45pm.
The Wrestlers will Host the Heritage Patriots in the final ACAC regular season match of the year. This is also senior night for our Boys Wrestlers. The jv matches will begin at 6:30pm.
The Championship games of the ACAC will be held on Saturday Morning. The Girls Championship will begin at 10am and the Boys game will follow at approximately Noon. The cost for entry to each of the ACAC games is $5. This is the oldest tournament in the State and we look forward to another Railroader Championship run! Good Luck to Both the Boys and Girls!
Tomorrow night we start off the week with a little C-Team Basketball vs the East Noble Knights. The games will be played in the Ober Gym and start with the girls playing at 6pm followed by the boys at approximately 7:15pm.
Then the ACAC Basketball Tournament Tips off for both the Boys and Girls Basketball teams at Heritage High School. The games will be held on Tuesday Night. The BOYS PLAY THE FIRST GAME. The reason for the backward game schedule is simple. The Boys Semi-Final games are at the Memorial Coliseum on Wednesday night and the early game enables them to get home a little earlier to get more rest.
SO, the Boys game at Heritage will begin at 6pm followed by the Girls game at approximately 7:30pm.
The Girls Semi-Final games will be on Thursday. WHEN we win the first game, both the Boys and Girls would play the LATE game at the Coliseum. The Boys would play the winner of South Adams/Woodlan at approx. 7:45pm on Wednesday. The Girls would play on Thursday at approx. 7:45pm.

11-2, Bad Days can be learning experiences!
Well, the wining streak comes to an abrupt halt. The Lady Railroaders lost to the NHC today and now sit at 11-2. We had a very tough time adjusting to the great defense of both the Homestead and Columbia City teams. We had a terrible day shooting free throws and an equally bad day turning the ball over. In the first game we were 8 of 20 from the line and followed that up with 6 of 16 in the second game . Both NHC teams are well coached and are very disciplined teams.
I don't usually comment on officiating. The Railroader faithful were not thrilled with the officiating at either game (to say the least). I have to admit when I got to the first game I noticed we had a very inexperienced officiating crew. Because of the quality of the teams playing, i knew this would be an intense game and I have to admit I was worried about the officiating from the beginning. I am not sure they had the experience of this level of game. HOWEVER, WE DID NOT LOSE THIS GAME BECAUSE OF THE OFFICIALS! We lost because we had twice as many turnovers as Homestead and shot only 40% from the free throw line. BOTH teams had exactly 20 fouls called on them. I have to admit this was a lot of fouls but the officials were calling the game equal for both sides. The final score of 52-55 could have been in our favor had we just corrected the turnover and free throw stats.
The second game we had a very experienced officiating crew. We can disagree with some of their "untimely" calls but again they had minimal impact on our losing this game. Our poor free throw shooting and equally poor shooting from the field (33%) had much more of an impact on our loss. When you combine that with their rebounding advantage of 2 to 1. It's hard to blame the loss on officials. Columbia CIty was called for 17 fouls while Garrett was only called for 14.
So, I always say when we play a perfect game and lose, then we can blame the loss on the officials. We were far from perfect today.
Hopefully we can learn from these losses today and we can correct some things to get ready for the ACAC tournament and the IHSAA tournament! We need to learn from days like this and make ourselves better!

I have dreaded this game since last December. The 2nd ranked Lady Railroaders traveled to the Stardome at South Adams High School to take on the Lady Starfires tonight. The South Adams Girls Basketball program has struggled to win games. They have won only one game this year and have been beaten soundly by most of their opponents. It is just as hard to play this type of game as it is to play an opponent you know is going to beat you badly. It certainly is tough to Coach and tough to prepare for. Last year, we got accused by their former Head Coach of running the score up. You are in a no win situation with this type of game.
Our coaching staff led by Dan Feagler did a wonderful job tonight. All of our girls played. Craig Kelham did a great job playing all of his girls in the jv game and Dan did a great job distributing playing time for all of our varsity girls also. The only stat that's important is this: Every girl on the Varsity squad tonight played and scored. Heather House, Megan Getts, and Jessica LaTurner all were in double figures on the way to a final score of 68-15. The Lady Railroaders did not press at all during the game and still came up with 33 Starfire Turnovers.
We now have a 10 day break until the NHC-ACAC Challenge at Columbia City. The games will be much different on that day. Homestead has a great team this year and Columbia City is always tough and especially so on their home court. This challenge will tell exactly where we are in preparation for the post season tournament.

Another W for the 2nd Ranked Lady Railroader Basketball team. But, after a dominating 1st half, the 2nd half was actually won by the Lady Jets of Adams Central 22-19.
The Lady Railroaders had 9 blocks and 13 steals, but also had 19 turnovers for the night. But a win is a win and we will take all we can get. We certainly have things we can work on to earn the number 2 ranking in the polls.
Fremont will be a very tough challenge and their record of 6-1 is pretty impressive. The game is in the Bateman Gymansium on Tuesday with a 6pm JV start.

BIG, BIG WIn for the Lady Railroaders. Always a tough opponent and a very rough game, Leo again came ready to play. But, despite a rash of illness all week, the Lady Railroaders overcame the rough play and won by a score of 39-31. Leo shot just 27% from the field and Garret wasn't too far behind shooting only 33%. With 40 fouls (Leo had 26 to 14 for Garrett) to say it was a rough game is an understatement. 3 Leo girls fouled out of the game and 1 Garrett player reached 5 fouls.
This game is always so critical because the Lady Lions have knocked us out of the ACAC championship several times in the past. But, when we have defeated Leo, it seems like we have a tendency to let down somewhere in the season. So, STAY Focused Lady Railroaders! Keep the Big Train Rolling!

Well, it certainly wasn't pretty. But, The Lady Railroaders defeated Prairie Heights tonight by a score of 56-38. The lone highlight of the night was freshman Brandi Dawson scoring a career high 24 points. She was amazing throughout the game. Heather House had a bad night but most people didn't know she was suffering from the flu. She struggled all night but really gave a gutsy effort to still help lead the team. You can tell a lot about an athlete by how hard they play when they are sick. Good Job Heather!
The Railroaders had 17 turnovers for the night. Most of the time you will lose a game when you have that many turnovers. But, PH had 22. They helped us survive the night. A team really shows it's character when it has an off night and still wins the game. Now we can move on to focus all our energy on the Leo Lady Lions. This is the biggest game of the young season to this point. If we want to win an ACAC title, we have to go through the tough Leo Girls Basketball team to do it.

This Week in sports!
The girls Varsity Basketball team travels to Prairie Heights tomorrow night to try to make it 7-0 for the season. The JV will tip-off at 6pm followed by the Varsity.
The Wrestlers travel to South Adams on Thursday to take on the very tough Starfire team. We have had a few injuries and illnesses to start the season but the Railroaders will be ready to give it everything they have to defeat the South Adams team in Berne. Wrestling will begin at 6:30pm on Thursday.
On Friday Night the Boys Basketball team travels to Woodburn to take on the Woodlan Warriors and try to reverse the results of the Saturday game. We just need to remember the game is a full 32 minutes long and finish. The JV game will start at 6pm.

In order to PUMP UP the fans and team on Saturday we are having a BLACK-OUT! All the Railroader Fans need to wear black to the game and support another girls victory.
