Track Night! + Golf

The Boys got 2nd at Central Noble Invitational tonight. Todd Frickey once again led the team with 1st place finishes in the 100 and 400. He also placed 5th in the 200, and ran on the 2nd place 4x100 relay team. Christian Miller, Jamarius Mitchell, and Desmond Kessler were the other team members. Drake Landes got 2nd in the long Jump, RObert Deventer got 2nd in Discus.  Coach Clifford said he is proud of his guys and they are peaking at the right time.

I didn't get specific results from the Girls at New Haven. But the team placed 7th. We didn't have a great night and our best place was 3rd.

Both teams compete at home vs. Southern Wells and Woodlan on Tuesday night.

Although you might have already heard, the Golfers tied last night vs Fremont and defeated Prairie Heights. In Golf, the first highest 4 scores are counted to the team total. Then the 5th golfer is used to break the tie. Well, the score was tied through 4 golfers and the fifth golfers for each team were also tied. Because it was a non-conference match, no tie breaker was played. The Golfers head to Auburn tomorrow to participate in the Baron Classic Golf tournament at Bridgewater. Good Luck to the Team and Coach Kleeman!

ACAC Split

The Softball team fell to Adams Central tonight in their 3rd ACAC game of the season. The final score was 6-2. The game was close early. Then the Railroaders couldn't fight their way back after a bad 5th inning.

Coach Bishop's comments: The game was pretty well played overall
but both teams did commit and error which lead to an unearned run for  each
team. We are not hitting the ball in key situations and were not going to win many
getting 4 hits a game and stranding runners. Adams Central had a big 5th inning
getting 4 runs on 5 hits including 2 doubles and a triple finding the gaps. Our bunt
coverage needs to improve along with the players reading the game themselves
and thats in part to our lack of expierence. We need to regroup a little and start
playing to our capabilities and everything would fall in place.

The Baseball team had an impressive night defeating Adams Central 11-1 in 5 innings. Kylan LaMotte had a complete game. He worked through Adams Central's line-up forcing the Jets to leave runners stranded on 3rd base on several occasions. The Railroader bats came to life tonight. We put the ball in play nearly every inning. We even hit the umpire with a shot up the middle early in the game. The game was a great effort.

Thanks to all the fans who came out tonight in less than spectacular weather conditions. But, we were able to get the conference games in which is so important this time of year. Thanks to John Bennett, Coach Bishop, and Coach Andrews for their hard work getting the softball diamond ready to play. Thanks to John, Coach Mireles, and the baseball team for getting the Baseball field ready to play.

As far as I'm concerned we have officially had enough rain!

Close!

It seems like all of our athletic events were exciting tonight. I just go the update from Softball and Garrett scored 1 run in the first inning. That's all they needed to defeat Leo 1-0 in a big ACAC matchup. There weren't many highlights except the final score. Jessica LaTurner and Katie DePew were both 2 for 3.  Really, Leo's pitcher dominated most of the game with 10 strike outs. But Kourtney Holliday had just enough to keep the Lady Lions off the scoreboard. Good Job Lady Railroaders!

The Boys and Girls track team both defeated Heritage in the first home track meet of the year. The night was full of close races. I love track. It is just as exciting, or more, than a close football game or an overtime, last second shot in Basketball. The relays were "Photo Finishes" every time. The problem is we don't use  cameras for dual meets. So we have to call the races by Eye. That is so intense. Jaron Sommers had a great night running the 3200 relay, 1600m, 800m, and the 3200m run. That is the toughest 4 events anyone could run. Jaron won all but the relay. What a workout. Jordyn Knott continued her track domination. Laura Moynahan had a great night in Shot and Discus. There were so many other great performances, I can't include them all. Maybe the finest performance was in the 1600m relay at the end of the night. Todd Frickey was the anchor and he had a huge margin to try to make-up. I really thought there was no way he could do it. But, He passed the Heritage runner in about 300m and the finish wasn't even close. He ran a 50 second split in his 400m. That is awesome.

Congrats to both track teams and the great workers who helped run the meet. We couldn't do it without them.

I haven't heard form Baseball. Let's hope they won. It doesn't matter if it's by one run or 10 runs, the victories count the same.

Boys Track

Ok. I've been waiting for final stats on Softball but don't have it. SO, I will update you on Boys Track. The Railroaders placed 4th at Goshen out of 16 teams. Todd Frickey won the 100m. Robert Deventer won the Discus. Drake Landes got 4th in Long Jump. The 4x100 relay team got 2nd. That team consisted of Jamarius Mitchell, Christian Miller, Desmond Kessler, and Todd Frickey. Great Day Guys!

Sunshine on the Railroaders!

I'm just starting to get some results from todays Activities for the Railroader SPring Teams.

The Girls Track team ran at Churubusco and did a great job competing. The team got 2nd in the Black Division getting beat by the host Lady Eagles. JOrdyn Knott continued her winning by earning 40 points winning the 200m, 400m, High Jump, and Long Jump. Wow! Laura Moynahan had a great day throwing 106 feet in the Discus and placing 3rd. She also placed 3rd in Shot Put. Ariel McCoy placed in both the 1600m and 3200m. Kaitlin Hinkle placed in the 800m.  All the 3 relays placed.  Great work Runners and Coaches!

The Baseball team split with East Noble today. The Railroaders won the first game 8-7 . Kylan LaMotte got the win and James Weber got the save. Brandon Porter was 3 of 4. He scored 3 runs, had 2 doubles, and 4 stolen bases. Great outing Railroaders.

In the 2nd game, the Railroaders fell by a score of 8-3. The Railroaders could only muster 4 hits (Shawn Lacey, Brandon Porter, Andrew Robinson, and Tyler Barrientes). Brandon Porter was tagged with the loss. But, Andrew Robinson and Noah Follet pitched 4 innings of shut out baseball for the railroaders.

The only information I have about Softball is The Lady Railroaders defeated Eastside in the first game and were losing to Dekalb in the 2nd game in the bottom of the 7th. When I get more information, I will let you know!

Dekalb Showdown Changes

The Dekalb County AD's met this morning to come up with a plan for the Dekalb Showdown. The weather is not good for the games being played today. So, todays games at Lakewood Park have been postponed to tomorrow and have been moved to Eastside.

All of the games will be played at Eastside High School tomorrow instead of Lakewood Park. Why? Eastside has a rain tarp to cover the infield. This will help get the field ready to play early tomorrow.

Garrett will start Saturday off by playing the first game at 10am vs Eastside. Garrett will play Dekalb at APPROXIMATELY 2PM and then play Lakewood Park at APPROXIMATELY 6PM.  The entire scheduled games will be played at 10am, 12noon, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm, and 8pm. That is a Marathon of great Softball. It should be exciting, like it always is.

THE TIMES ARE JUST ESTIMATED START TIMES. Because of the tight schedule. Infield practice between games will be eliminated after the teams first appearance and field prep will be done on a limited basis only.

The Cost for the tournament will be $10 for all day. The price will be reduced for the 2pm game. For those concerned about the price, the price is no different than what it would have been playing on Friday and Saturday.

2 ACAC Losses

I don't have stats but both the Softball team and the Baseball team fell to Woodlan tonight. This was the opening game of ACAC play for the Railroaders. The Girls lost to a very strong (Probably ACAC favorite) Woodlan team 7-1. The Baseball team lost a very close game 2-1.

The Lady Railroaders play in the Dekalb Showdown tomorrow at Lakewood Park. Garrett plays at 6pm. Hopefully the weather will hold off to get the games in this weekend.

The Baseball team travels to East Noble on Saturday for a double header.

Good Luck teams!

"Winter" Baseball and Softball - Golf match rescheduled

After a long layoff and a week of cancellations, both the Baseball team and Softball team saw action tonight in Garrett. The weather was better for Ice Hockey but had to do for "Winter" Baseball and Softball. The Lady Railroader Softball team defeated Hamilton 12-2 in 6 innings tonight. Coach Bishop, John Bennett, and Mike Andrews worked all day to get the field ready to play after a deluge of rain the last few days. This was an important game for the Softball team in preparation of the ACAC conference season which begins tomorrow at Woodlan.

The Baseball team played a Non-scheduled game vs Concordia tonight also as an important "warm-up" game for the ACAC opener tomorrow at Woodlan. The game was scheduled today after both our previous opponents were unable to reschedule our games from Monday and Tuesday. Although we lost the game 13-1, we were able to shake off the rust after the weather related lay-off.

Both teams travel to Woodlan tomorrow for the first ACAC games of the season. Both games begin at 5pm.

The JV baseball game at Dekalb was cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

The home Golf match with Southside was also cancelled tonight and wlll not be rescheduled. The ACAC Quad match scheduled for this past Tuesday at Bluffton has been rescheduled for Monday, May 9th. Tee-offs will be at 5pm.

More cancellations! Rescheduling Nightmares!

I wake up in the middle of the night from nightmares about rescheduling spring events. I don't have nightmares about scary movies. I have nightmares about rescheduling Spring Athletic Contests. The last two days has been crazy with spring cancellations. We have cancelled 8 High School events the last two days. My biggest problem is trying to get them rescheduled. It seems like it should be so easy to reschedule games, but it's not. I spent extended time on the phone the last two days with my fellow athletic directors to try to find dates to reschedule these 8 events. So far, no luck.  I just checked and we have only 4 open dates to re-schedule our baseball games. We can't use Fridays because those are reserved for conference games. We have senior night on one of our open dates and the IHSAA limits the number of games we can play during the week. With all that information and our opponents having the same information, it's not surprising we could not come up with dates that would work. So today I sent out an email to area schools to see if we could add one of them to the schedule to get our teams some more games. So far no response. Softball has the same issues. Both Baseball and softball have some low numbers this year and jv games have also been an issue. Both of those teams are playing on a day-by-day basis. Tonight's track meet and Golf Match also has some issues. Now we have to coordinate the schedules for 3 schools instead of just two. It has  been really wild and their is no end in sight!

Even if I get lucky enough to reschedule a game, I have to find new umpires and workers to actually play the game. I think I'm getting a headache!

We will do what we can to get contests for our student-athletes. It's not always easy. But it's worth it!

Go Railroaders!

Busy week with GHS Athletics!

Just got back from a weekend trip. I didn't get stats from Saturday's events. But, It sounds like we had a pretty good Saturday. Our Varsity Baseball team took two games from Whitko, our Boys Track team got 2nd place at the Monument City Relays, and our Golf Team got 5th at the Brookwood Invitational.

Congrats to the teams. As we get ready for another busy week, we hope the weather cooperates to get all our games played as scheduled.

Varsity Baseball -- The Boys  have a busy week playing games on Monday (vs Dwenger), Tuesday (vs. Blackhawk), Thursday (@Woodlan), and Saturday (DH vs East Noble). The home games begin at 5pm on Monday and at 6pm on Tuesday. The away games begin at 5pm on Thursday, and 10am on Saturday.

Varsity Softball -- The Girls have an even busier schedule than the Boys. They play Monday (630pm @Fairfield), Wednesday (6pm vs Hamilton), Thursday (5pm @Woodlan), and the Dekalb Showdown on Friday and Saturday. Those games will be played at Lakewood Park.

Track -- Both track teams travel to Leo for an ACAC Triangular meet with Bluffton and Leo on Tuesday. Then Saturday the girls travel to Churubusco and the boys travel to Goshen for Invitationals.

Golf -- The Boys golf team travels to Bluffton for an ACAC Quad match on Tuesday, Host Fort Wayne Southside on Wednesday, and then end the week at South Adams for their invitational on Saturday.

As you can see it is a very busy week, pray for sun and good weather!  Good Luck Railroaders!

Baseball Battle

I didn't see the game tonight at Churubusco tonight. But, I think it's safe to say it was a bit ugly. I just got the stats for the game and both teams combined for 14 errors in 7 innings. Garrett had 9 errors and Busco had 5. Churubusco came out on top for the game by a score of 12-8.

Brett Schendel only gave up 4 earned runs in his 5 innings of work. He had 2 walks and 3 strike-outs. Logan Lee was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored. Brett Schendel was 2 of 4 with 3 RBI's.

Churubusco is a strong program and I know Coach Mireles will not rest until we eliminate the mental mistakes. It's one thing to get beat by a team that's better than you. It's another thing to give the game away with mental mistakes.

Well, you can't dwell on the past. You can only look forward to the future!

We're growing up!

Well we couldn't get a hit last night. But, tonight we really did a great job putting the ball in play. We fought against a tough Carroll Charger team tonight at Denny Feagler Field. The Chargers scored first in the first inning and then the Lady Railroaders scored to tie things up. For the next 6 innings the Chargers controlled the game even though Garrett hit the ball hard. They didn't dominate but were good enough to build a 3-1 lead. Both Katie Depew and Rachel Stafford had well hit balls that were snagged in desperation and then plays were made to pick off Garrett Runners.  Hannah McCoy made a great catch in Center field and threw the ball with confidence to Home plate with perfect accuracy. Even though we didn't get the out, we did everything right on that play. Our young team is starting to play better. We still had a few errors that need eliminated but we are improving.

In the bottom of the 7th Garrett loaded the bases with no outs. A grounder was hit to third base, the play was at home, but the catcher mishandled the ball and we scored. Now it's 3-2. Next batter, same situation, bases loaded, ball hit to third, exact same result. But, this time the ball goes to the backstop and 2 runs score. Game over!

Good Job Ladies! You deserved the win because of your effort! I am sure we'll have a few more bumps in the road, but we are making progress.

Off night!

The Lady Railroader Softball team lost a little focus tonight. But, they were beaten by a pretty good team from Columbia City. A couple of mistakes in fielding and lack of offense led to a 9-0 defeat tonight. Not too many highlights to share. Except, we can look forward to another game tomorrow night versus another NHC team wen the Carroll Chargers come to Denny Feagler field.  Good Luck tomorrow!

The Boys Baseball team will travel to Churubusco to take on the Eagles in a possible Sectional tournament match-up. The game begins at 5pm. Good Luck Railroader Baseball team.

Signs!

Psalm 71 (New International Version, ©2011)

Psalm 71

 1 In you, LORD, I have taken refuge;
let me never be put to shame.
2 In your righteousness, rescue me and deliver me;
turn your ear to me and save me.
3 Be my rock of refuge,
   to which I can always go;
give the command to save me,
for you are my rock and my fortress.
4 Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked,
from the grasp of those who are evil and cruel. 5 For you have been my hope, Sovereign LORD,
   my confidence since my youth.
6 From birth I have relied on you;
you brought me forth from my mother’s womb.
   I will ever praise you.
7 I have become a sign to many;
   you are my strong refuge.
8 My mouth is filled with your praise,
declaring your splendor all day long.

Are people watching you? If you are a bold proclaiming christian, I would guess they are. They want to know if you're "real". They want to know if your words match your actions. They want to know if you're a Christian just on Sundays or 365 days per year. As Christians we are signs to many people. What type of sign are you. Do you give helpful information. Are you a warning sign? Are you selling something?  Are you a Public Service Announcement? Are you a Yield or a Stop Sign. Are you a warning sign to the dangers ahead? Are you a Road Construction sign? Are you a Speed Limit sign? Are you an information sign?

As Christians we are on display for everyone to see. We need to make sure we are sending the message God wants us to send. We are his creation.

Track Teams Split

The Railroader Track teams split tonight in the first ACAC meets of the season. The teams traveled to South Adams to take on the Starfires and the Jets of Adams Central. Both Boys and Girls teams were defeated by South Adams and beat both Jet teams.

Jordyn Knott continued her winning ways remaining undefeated for the season. She won the 4 events she was entered, 100m, 200m, High Jump and Long Jump. Heather House won both hurdle events and got a 3rd in Long Jump. Laura Moynahan got both first place ribbons in the Shot Put and Discus.

For the Boys, Todd Frickey continued to dominate the sprints winning the 100m, 200m, and a member of the winning 4x100 team. The other 400m relay team members were Christian Miller, Jamarius Mitchell, and Desmond Kessler.  Patrick Chester won high Jump and Drake Landes won the Long Jump.  Desmond Kessler was also 2nd place in the 400m run, Jaron Summers was 2nd in 3200m run, Mat Schultz was 2nd in both the SHot Put and Discus.

The Boys travel to Monument City to participate in the annual relays at Angola High School on Saturday. Bundle up... the weather is supposed to be cold and rainy!

Good Luck Track teams!

Golfers Bounce Back against the Barons

The Garrett Golf team was soundly defeated by the Dekalb Barons on Saturday at the East Noble Invitational Golf Tournament. But, tonight the Golfers got even by defeating the Barons in a dual match at the Garrett Country Club. Once again Bennett Rieke led the Railroaders with a 36. Cameron Stockdale shot a 40 and Karsten Cooper shot a 42.  The Railroaders defeated Dekalb by 11 strokes.

This team is young and has great potential. I look forward to seeing what they can do in the next 6 to 8 weeks. Next up for the team is the Brookwood Invitational Saturday. Good Luck!

Double Victories

The Baseball and Softball teams traveled North tonight to take on the Lady Eagles of Fremont and the Angola Hornets. BOTH TEAMS dispatched their opponents in fine fashion

Baseball
I didn't get complete stats for the Railroaders. But the final score was Garrett 9- Angola 7. It looks like Andrew Johnson go the win. Even though Angola out hit the Railroaders, Garrett pulled out the win. The Baseball team now has a record of 2-3.

Softball
The Lady Railroaders destroyed Fremont tonight in 5 innings with a final score of 14-3. Kortney Holiday got the win with 4 solid innings of 1 hit ball. Kelley Singleton and Jessica Laturner were 3 of 4 at the plate and Katie Depew was 2 of 4. Jessica LaTurner had a 5 RBI night. Great Work Ladies!

The Track teams travel to South Adams tomorrow night. Garrett Softball hosts Columbia City Wednesday night and the Baseball team travels to Churubusco on Thursday night.

Good Luck Railroaders!

First Track Meet 2011-- Part 1

Garrett traveled to Dekalb tonight to take on the Baron Boys/Girls Track teams. The Lady Railroaders lost 78-46, but had some great individual performances.

Jordyn Knott got 4 individual 1st places in the Long Jump, High Jump, 100m, and the 200m.
Taylor Drzewiecki ogt 1st place in Pole Vault. Elaina had 2 second place finishes in the 100m and 200m. The following also earned 2nd place finishes -- Emma Riedly (400m), Kaitlin Hinkle (800m), Ariel McCoy (3200m), Laura (Discus).

The Boys result was much the same as the girls (78-49). Todd Frickey led the Railroaders by setting the GHS record in the 100m with a sprint of 10.8 seconds.  He also won the 200m and place 3rd in the High Jump. Jaron Sommers won the 1600m and 3200m,  Patrick Chester got a 1st in the High Jump, Jamarius Mitchell got 1st in the Long Jump and 2nd in the 200m,   Kendall Slabaugh got 1st place in the 800m, Robert Deventer got 2nd in Discus, and Desmond Kessler got 2nd in the 400m.

Great performances. Next up Adams Central and South Adams next Tuesday evening at SA!

Spring has Sprung

The Spring Sports Seasons are under way. The girls softball team defeated East Noble last night by a score of 4-3. Anessa Smith hit a 3 run homer to lead the team. Being the smallest girl on the team and only a freshman, this is really exciting.

Tonight the SOftball team did not fair as well. They were defeated by Angola by a score of 9-1. Kelly Singleton led the team with 3 hits in 4 at bats. Macy Sturgis got the lone RBI by driving in Courtney Holliday.

Below are Coach Bishops comments about the game:

Scott Bishop:  Angola is a veteran team with all the parts.  They can hit, pitch
and have a defense with speed.  We were just overmatched tonight but our kids
never gave up.  We had 9 hits and I'll take 9 hits every game.  We need to make
the simple plays on defense as we had 4 more errors tonight and that shows our
lack of playing experience as we have 5 new starters.  With the loss we still saw
some positive points about our team.  We will just keep working and continue to
grow.

The Baseball team played their first game tonight here in Garrett. The team got out to a quick start and led the Eastside Blazers 2-0 until the 4th inning. Then the team had some miscues that led to 4 runs for the Blazers. The final score  was Eastside 4 - Garrett 2.  Brett Schendel looked good on the mound early.  I am sure Coach Mireles will work on elliminating the mental mistakes. We beat ourselves.

The Boys will travel to Prairie Heights tomorrow night and the Lady Railroaders will travel to Fremont on Monday.
