Thanks Seniors!

Dear Seniors,

Wow! Another year in education, another great group of seniors, another set of goodbyes! I personally want to thank each senior athlete and each senior athlete parent for all the time and energy you put in to GHS Athletics. You all can be proud of the high school athletic career you have completed. By looking at each of you I can tell we reached our goal.

The goal of our athletic department is to better prepare you for life on your own.  We want you to learn from your successes and failures. We have seen you win graciously and lose with equal class. I can tell you  that as freshman we never thought you would accomplish all that you have. But, here we are 4 years later and we are so proud of your accomplishments.

We started out to teach you character and how to do things the right way. Not to win at all costs, but prepare to win in every way possible. We wanted to push you beyond where you thought you could go. Most of you went way beyond where we pushed you.

Thank You for everything. You are welcome to come and visit us all the time. You are invited to come and share your successes and failures. If there is anything you ever need, you know where to find us. Even though your High School Athletic career is over, you will always be a member of this department. We will write your recommendations, cheer your future acomplishments, share in the growth of your own family, and provide a shoulder when your losses get you down. We love you and will miss you!

GOD BE WITH YOU TIL WE MEET AGAIN!

Bennett...................I feel your pain!

I love being Athletic Director of GHS. I really enjoy watching our student-athletes succeed. I feel their joy just like it was my own. Before ball games, I get as nervous as they do. When we get to tournament time, I feel the same sense of urgency and pressure. Today was a great example of that!

Today was the IHSAA Golf Regional at Orchard Ridge Country Club in Fort Wayne. 12 individual golfers and 12 teams fought for a place in the State Tournament next week. Bennett Rieke qualified as an individual and was making his 3rd attempt to qualify for Indianapolis.  For the average Golfer, shooting a 40 on 9 holes is pretty good. Not for Bennett Rieke. Bennett and his group teed off on the back nine and after nine holes he was 4 over. Needless to say Bennett wasn't happy. On his 10th hole, he birdied and continued to play pretty good golf through the next 6 holes. He barely missed a birdie on his 15th hole. It rimmed out. That would be very costly! On the 8th hole (his 17th), he got into some trouble and bogeyed the hole. But, the very next hole, a par 3, he drilled the birdie. He finished the day 3 over with a 75. That would be a career day for the average golfer. Then came the waiting. The tension was amazing as the scores came in. In order to qualify for state as an individual, you must finish in the top 3 score of those not qualifying as a team. Bennett ended up in a 3 way tie for 3rd place. SOOOOO, we had a play-off. None of the golfers shot well on the first playoff hole. Bennett was in trouble from the beginning. In the Trees, over the green, over the green again, chip, putt, and putt. Bennett had a double bogey. The other 2 golfers had bogeys. The season was over. Bennett quietly gathered his clubs and walked back to the bus. He was going home. He never said a word. No one dared say anything to him.

I was in just as much pain as he was. Maybe worse. Because in my case I couldn't do anything or say anything that would ease the pain. I wanted to. Bennett is a great golfer. He fought all day even though he was not at his best. He is one of the most intense competitors I've been around. He is also a good leader for this very young golf team. He is the leader on the course and the others try to emulate him.

We are proud of Bennett and all his hard work. We are proud of this entire program and the work Coach Kleeman puts in to prepare his kids. I hope and pray in Bennett's senior year he will see all that work rewarded with a trip to state! I don't know if I can handle to pain otherwise.

2010-2011 Not yet over!

Our tracksters finished the season at the State meet yesterday and Friday. Todd Frickey and Jordyn Knott both placed at the IHSAA State Meet. Todd finished 8th in the 100m on Friday and Jordyn Finished 7th in Long Jump yesterday.  Jordyn has now placed in two events at the state meet in two consecutive years. Both her and Todd earned All-State Honors. We are exceptionally proud of their hard work. The Coaches have also put a lot of work in to make this a great season for our Track program. Garrett has such a great tradition of state qualifiers. In the past 10 years we have only had a couple years where we did not send someone to the State Meet.

Garrett Golfers also participated in the IHSAA tournament on Friday. I had made an error saying that Jacob Stafford was participating on the sectional team. Our Fifth Golfer was Zach Sarrazine and he really stepped it up on Friday to finish 3rd on the team. The Golfers didn't have the day they wanted on Friday finishing 6th as a team. Only the top 3 teams transfer to the Regional Tournament. Bennett Rieke finished in the Top 3 individual golfers and qualified for Regionals for the 3rd straight year. We are proud of our young golf team. They have performed so well this year and Spring 2012 can't get here quick enough!

Go Railroaders!

Good Luck Golfers! + State Track Meets

Tomorrow is the Golf Sectional at Noble Hawk. The Railroader Golf team will tee-off between 9:40 and 10:15am tomorrow morning. Bennett Rieke, Karsten Cooper, Cameron Stockdale, Noah Getts, and Jacob Stafford will work to bring home a sectional trophy and/or qualify for the Golf Regional as a team. This team has had a great season winning it's first ACAC Conference Team title and defeating some quality teams throughout the season.  The Top 3 teams and the top 3 individuals not on a qualifying team will transfer to the regional tournament in Fort Wayne, next week. Bennett Rieke has qualified each of the last 2 years and his leadership will give our team another great boost to qualify as a team. We are in the hunt and can not be counted out for a victory if we golf well.

We also want to wish luck to Todd Frickey who runs at the State Meet tomorrow at around 5pm. Jordyn Knott will compete in the Girls State Meet on Saturday. Both have great chances to bring home some hardware.  Good Luck!
