Baseball Season Ends

Great Pitching + No Offense + 7 Errors = 5 - 1 Loss in the Sectional Championship.

Andrew Robinson and Brett Schendel combined for 7 innings giving up NO earned runs and losing 5-1 to the Leo Lions in the Sectional Championship game this afternoon. The Railroaders defense had too many "bobbles" to defeat a solid Leo team and the offense didn't help. Leo's Taylor Horn had 11 strikeouts and gave up only 2 hits to the Railroaders. James Weber had a double in the 5th inning to break up the no hitter bid. Travis Carunchia followed two batters later with an RBI Single to drive in Weber. That was the only offense all night.

Leo travels to Bellmont for the IHSAA Class 3A Regional next Saturday.

Today was the last game for our Senior Baseball Players. Garrett Moon, James Weber, Andrew Johnson, Travis Carunchia, Logan Casselman, and Kylan LaMotte ended their careers today.  All of these young men have been a big part of our baseball program. Logan transferred to Garrett this year and was an immediate contributor. Coach Mireles said he would've loved to have him for 4 years. The others were all steady members of the team throughout their careers. We wish them luck as they move on to college and life outside GHS.

Today was also the last home event of the Spring Season. I am certainly proud of our kids. But, I am also proud of all the workers who helped make this a great season for GHS Sports. Becky Blotkamp is #1 when it comes to GHS Sports. She always gets things ready so we can pay officials and coordinate workers for all events. Thanks Beck for your hard work and dedication to the Kids at GHS. I would like to also thank Greg Griffin, Rich Wisel, Tammy Stafford, Alan Bobalik, Austin Freels,  Mary Baker, Anne Duckett, and all the other workers who helped work games this year. We couldn't do, what we do, without You!

Now let's finish up the season with a Golf Sectional Championship and some State Medals this weekend!

Sectional Title Game -- Go Railroaders!

The Railroader Baseball Team will take on ACAC Rival Leo this afternoon in the IHSAA Class 3A Sectional 22 Championship game. The game begins at 5pm. Cost is $5. Come out and support the Baseball team earn its first ever Class 3A Championship. Good Luck Railroaders!

Great night for Railroaders - track, golf, and baseball

Boys Track Regional

What an up and down night at the IHSAA Regional Track meet at Wayne High School. Drake Landes competed very well in 3 events tonight. He didn't jump as far as he wanted in Long Jump and his 110 Hurdles. He missed the finals in both events. But, he ran his heart out in the 300 hurdles getting his best time of the year. He did not qualify for State but we are very proud of his efforts.

Robert Deventer had a great night in Discus. He has been throwing 159' all year and just couldn't break through to the 160's. But, tonight on his last throw he threw 166'8". That magnificent throw not only earned him a trip to the IHSAA State meet in Bloomington, he also got 2nd place. Robert is one of the nicest young men at GHS and no one has out worked him this year. It is great to see a great student-athlete reap the rewards of his hard work. Now onward to state!

Todd Frickey hates the 200m dash. He loves the shorter 100m race. If he had his way he would have pulled out of the 200 for tonights meet. The track coaches wouldn't let him. I'm glad! Todd, who placed at the state meet last year in the 100, finished a disappointing 4th place tonight. It was very emotional for him, his family, and the coaches. He made it to the finals seeded 3rd but with the strong head wind, he didn't get the finish he wanted. In the 200m he was seeded 6th, without much of a chance getting out. Never say die. Todd ran the race of his life, again against a stiff wind. He broke the school record again in 22.14, placed 2nd, and earned his 2nd straight trip to the IHSAA State Track meet in Bloomington with Robert.  Coach Clifford said that Todd was really down in the dumps after the 100. But, he never gave up and answered with a magnificent race in the 200. Again, it is great to see a great, hard working athlete, get what he deserves. I am so proud of him, the coaching staff, and the families that supported these two lung men. Have fun at State and bring home some hardware!

The Garrett baseball team played in the semifinals tonight against Concordia. We let some key opportunities get away from us early, leaving 7 runners on base and falling behind 3-0. But we fought our way back to tie it in the 6th and then go ahead with a James Weber double. Weber also came in for 3 strong innings and got the win. Brett Schendel was 2 for 4 scoring 2 runs. Weber scored a run on a Homerun in the 5th. His double clinched it. Garrett won 5-3 and moves on to the sectional championship game on Monday at 5:00pm vs Leo. Leo defeated Angola decisively, by the score of 12-1.

 Good luck team!

Boys Golf

The Golfers also played tonight. They traveled to East Noble to test themselves on the sectional course. Here are Coach Kleemans comments: "t appears that the momentum we built last Saturday in the ACAC Conference Tournament did carry over to today's match. Both the varsity and JV teams defeated East Noble and Central Noble on the front 9 at Noble Hawk.

This time it was the underclassmen that led the way. Karsten had a team low 37 which was followed by Zach Sarrazine's 39. These 2 seem to be gaining more confidence in themselves and the team each match. As a coach I couldn't be more pleased with the way they handle themselves on and off the course. Bennett had his first eagle of the year and had a respectable score of 40. And Cam comes in with another 40. Like I said previously, Cam's swing is starting to come together and I look for him to put together a real good sectional score. Jake Stafford and Noah Getts both bounced back with good scores of 43 and 44.

Now for the really good news - our team score of 156 was the best score of the year. In addition, I think it is the best 9 hole team score that the 4 seniors (Bennett, Cam, Jake and Noah) have had in their 4 years. What a nice way for those 4 to finish their regular season careers.

As for the JV team - Freshman Shae Rowlison had a team best 42 and tied for medalist. Vince Marshall turned a real nice 43 after a double bogey 6 on the first hole.

All the kids have worked very hard this spring through some cold, windy, dry conditions. Now we prepare for the Sectional at Noble Hawk on Friday, June 1.

Varsity Team Results:

Softball Season Ends - Coach Bishop Comments

"As you have heard by now Garrett was defeated by Woodlan last night in the Sectional at Leo 5-0. Woodlans piicher was dominant once again. She had a perfect game going into the 7th. Katie DePew came to the plate and with 2 strikes on her hit a hard ground ball pass a diving shorstop into left field to get our only hit of the night. Katie is a senior and that was her last at bat at GHS and a great way for her to end a fantastic career. She only struck out once in 102 ab and that was against the Woodlan pitcher earlier in the year which ruined a streak of 94 consecutive plate appearances without striking out. . Her junior and senior year she struck out 3 times in 102 attempts. Our team played hard, but were simply out matched by a better team and that happens some times in sports. We grew up as a team this year and must continue to grow more. If we can do that, this group will represent themselves and the SOFTBALL program even better in the future. We also say good bye to Casandra Griffith and Madison Griffin who played in their last game also. We wish them well as they move on."

Baseball / Softball Sectional Results

Tonight Garrett hosted the Class 3A Baseball Sectional and it was a great success. In the first game Concordia defeated Bishop Dwenger by the score of 9-0. In the second game, the host Railroaders defeated a greatly improved Woodlan team 3-1. Brett Schendel got the win going 6 innings. James Weber go the save. Brett cruised through 5 innings. He had a little bit of a shaky 6th inning but he ended the game with 6 strike outs, giving up only 4 hits and 1unearned run. James Weber was 2 for 3. But, Dustin Underwood led the team offensively going 3 for 3. Porter, Moon, and Weber all scored for the Railroaders.

Tomorrow night the Railroaders will take on the Cadets of Concordia at 5pm. Leo and Angola will finish the night in the second game.

The girls softball team lost to a very good Woodlan team tonight also in sectional play. We had to play a near perfect game to have a chance at the victory. It just didn't happen tonight. The final score was 5-0 Woodlan.

We want to wish our Senior Softball players luck in their future. Katie, Cassie, and Madison. We will miss you and your leadership in our program. When I get more details on the loss tonight I will post them.

Golf Tune-up and 3peat to State!

Jordyn Knott made it 3 in a row in her bid for a trip to the IHSAA State Track meet. Jordyn was entered in 3 events and placed in all 3. She placed 7th in Long Jump and the 300 Hurdles with great efforts in each of them. The Northrup Regional is one of the toughest in the state and she can be proud of those efforts. But, she had an outstanding performance at High Jump placing 2nd with a Jump of 5'4.25". This height is also the state standard and is an impressive jump.  Jordyn has qualified for 3 years in a row. Her Sophomore year she also qualified in High Jump. Last year she qualified in Long Jump.  She has placed in both trips to Bloomington.

We also had two other Regional Participants tonight. Laura Moynahan competed in both Shot Put and Discus. Laura made the finals in both events placing 9th in Discus and placed 5th in Shot Put with a PR . The top 3 places qualify for the State meet in Bloomington.  Laura ended her career tonight with great efforts and a great attitude. She has been a valuable leader in our track, basketball, and volleyball programs. She has worked very hard athletically and academically. We look forward to seeing what her future holds. Thanks Laura. We are proud of you.

Ariel McCoy also ended her high school track career tonight with a great run in the 3200m. She went out strong and was competitive throughout the race. She ended running her career best time. That's all you can ask for at this meet. She too, has been a great leader in Track and Cross Country. Thanks Ariel for your dedication to track and cross country. Good Luck with your college running career at Trine!

After a great ACAC Championship win on Saturday, the Railroader Golf Team had a match to tune up for the Sectional Tournament a week from Friday. Here are the results and comments from Coach Kleeman:

"We continue improving as the regular season winds down. Today's match at Maxwelton Golf Course in Syracuse against West Noble was very encouraging to me. Bennett changed his putting grip and started making some putts for the first time this season. Only a triple bogey 7 on the par 4 ninth hole kept him from having a very good round. Karsten had a very solid 39. Coop is turning into one of the most consistent golfers on this team. Cameron played 8 holes at 2 over but like Bennett, he also took a 7 on the 9th hole giving him a nice 41. Zach Sarrazine continued his good play with a 43 on a course he has never played before.

Next we travel to Noble Hawk on Thursday to play East Noble and Central Noble. This will be a great test for the kids with the Sectional being played at Noble Hawk next Friday."

Thanks
Coach Kleeman

ACAC Golf Champions 2012!

ACAC Champions!

Senior Day Softball and Baseball

Today was the end of the Regular Season for the Garrett Baseball and Softball teams. Both teams had a double header today and honored the 2012 Seniors between games.

Softball lost the first game after playing the first 6 innings to a 1-1 tie. The 7th inning was the downfall for the Lady Railroaders. The final score was 5-2. Here are Coach Bishop's comments:

Senior day today and things did not go as planned. We lost the 1st game 5-2 and 2nd game 3-1, our hitting once again did us in along with a few errors. In between games we ahd 3 seniors Katie DePew(attending Huntington University and playing softball, Casandra Griffith (also attending Huntington and is on the bowling team
and Madison Griffin playing their last home games at Feagler Field. We just couldn't put anything together all day and the results are evident. On to sectionals at Leo against Woodlan ranked 3rd in 3A.

Scott Bishop

The Baseball team faired better against West Noble than Softball did against Snider, they won the first game 10-2. Brett Schendel went the distance.

We honored the 6 senior Baseball Players and their parents between games. Travis Carunchia, Logan Casselman, Andrew Johnson, Kylan LaMotte, Garrett Moon, and James Weber, have done a great job this season leading the team. They are great baseball players and great young men. We are proud of them and wish them all the luck in their future.

In game #2 the Railroaders dominated once again. We won that game 13-0.

Both these teams participate in their respective IHSAA Sectional Tournaments this week. The Softball team will travel to Leo to take on Woodlan in the BYE game of the sectional. That game will be played on Wednesday night. The Boys team will stay home to host Woodlan in the second game of the sectional here at Garrett also on Wednesday night.

Good Luck Teams, bring home the Hardware.

ACAC Golf Champions AGAIN!

For the second year in a row, Garrett is the 2012 ACAC Golf Champions. What a beautiful day for golf at Brookwood in Fort Wayne. The annual ACAC Conference Golf Tournament is one of my favorites.  Our Golfers have always been very competitive and today was no different. Coach Kleeman has done a great job with this program and I can't wait to see how we do in the upcoming IHSAA tournament. Here are Coach Kleeman's comments:

As a coach you try telling the kids that every shot counts and it really proved true again this weekend. Last Saturday we go to Angola and finish tied for 3rd place but settle for 4th using the 5th man score. Now this weekend we have another nail bitter but come out on top. We shoot a team total of 326 to Heritage's 327. I couldn't be prouder of the way all 5 players handled themselves today. Back-to-back ACAC Conference Tournament Champions - way to go!

On an individual level Bennett and Karsten are both 1st team All Conference. Bennett has now been all conference 1st team all 4 years of his high school career. He was medalist 2 times and runner-up twice. In addition, Bennett holds the conference tournament individual scoring record with the 70 he shot at last year's tournament. That is quite an accomplishment.  Karsten was 2nd team all conference as a freshman last year and is now 1st team all conference. Cameron and Zach are both 2nd team all conference. Cameron missed being 1st team by one stroke. (Once again, every shot counts.)

Team Scores:
Garrett - 326 (163-163)
Heritage - 327 (170-157)
Woodlan - 341 (177-164)
Leo - 341 (171-170)
South Adams - 348 (179-169)
Bluffton - 369 (185-189)
Adams Central - 383 (195-188)
Southern Wells - 423 (198-225)

Individual Scores for Garrett:
Bennett Rieke - 77 (39-38)
Karsten Cooper - 80 (41-39)
Cameron Stockdale - 83 (43-40)
Zach Sarrazine - 86 (40-46)
Jake Stafford - 90 (46-44)

Boys Track Sectional Results

The Boys traveled to Angola to run in the IHSAA Sectional Track meet. Just like the girls, we had another great night with some unexpected surprises. The Team got 5th overall . Todd Frickey won the 100m and 200m races. He set a new meet record in the 110m - 10.85. Robert DeVenter was also the Discus Champion. Drake Landes was 3rd in Long Jump and the 300 hurdles. He also finished 4th in the 110m hurdles and will go to regionals. He was seeded 10th in this race and really stepped it up.

Other placers but not qualifying was Jaron Somers 6th - 1600, Conner Foster 7th-1600, 400 relay team finished 8th, Patrick Chester finished 7th in High Jump, and Connor Meehan finished 8th in shotput.

Coach Cliffords comments " This group of young men stepped up and performed their best at the end of the season. Through a rocky start of the season they banded together and kept working hard for this final meet. As their Coach I couldn't have asked for any more! Overall it was a great night for a track meet. Congrats to the men who ended their season tonight. Thank You for your hard work and effort. Good Luck to the 3 men that continuing on to Regional next week! Let's keep th train rolling on......"

1-W and 2-L's

The softball team turned it around and got the only win of the night. The Lady Railroader Softball team defeated Prairie Heights 11-8. The team had 15 hits. Coach Bishop was not on the bench tonight but he is at home. He is latte weak right now but Expets to be back in action soon. katie Depew and Ashley Morris were both 3 for 5, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBIs. Annessa Smith and Rachel Stafford were 2 for 4. Yarian was the winning pitcher. Thanks Coach Depew for getting the stats to me. coach Bishop would be proud of all of you. The Boys Baseball team was defeated tonight by the Hamilton Marines 10-5. Coach said we just didn't get the offense going.Andrew Robinson took the loss. The Boys Golf team traveled to Woodlan for a non conference match tonight. Here are Coach Kleemans comments and results: A disappointing loss to a Woodlan team that has been playing well as of late. Our team score of 161 is the lowest for the year and yet we get beat by 8 strokes. I hate to keep saying this but my hat is off to Woodlan. There score of 153 is the lowest we have faced this year. However there are some bright spots for our team. Cameron is starting to play the consistent golf we have been expecting from him this year. His tempo is where it needs to be and he is putting better. Zach Sarrazine had a nice round of 41. When we went to Woodlan 2 weeks ago he shot 45. Bennett continues to strike the ball from tee to green at an amazing pace. Today, Bennett hit 7 of 7 fairways and putted for 7 birdies. Eventually the putts are going to start dropping an when they do look out. He is going to get hot. Our JV team played very well. Especially since none of the kids had ever played this golf course. Sophomore Jarid Adams shot a great round of 40 and Freshman Shae Rollison had a nice 41 with a 7 on the par 3 ninth hole. Good job Jarid and Shae. Garrett's varsity and JV team traveled to Woodlan to play a non-conference match at Pond-A-River on Wednesday May 16. Varsity Team Score: Woodlan - 153 Garrett - 161 JV Team Score: Woodlan 215 Garrett - 173 Individual Scores for Woodlan Varsity: Logan Braaten - 38 Cameron Voss - 34 (2 under par & match medalist) Logan Buuck - 39 Kyle Nieuwlandt - 46 Graham Renbarger - 42 Micha Koenman - 58 Individual Scores for Garrett Varsity: Bennett Rieke - 37 Karsten Cooper - 45 Cameron Stockdale - 39 Zach Sarrazine - 41 Jake Stafford - 44 Noah Getts - 47 Individual Scores for Woodlan JV: Tyler Gerig - 49 Brian Salmon - 55 Luke Mendenhall - 65 Tyler Kern - 53 Individual Scores for Garrett JV: Vince Marshall - 45 Jarid Adams - 40 (match medalist) Jacob Laturner - 47 Shae Rollison - 41 Drew Graham - 58 Hollitte Green - 54 Thanks Coach Kleeman

Great Night for GHS Girls Track +Softball +Baseball Draw

Tonight the Softball team was defeated by Homestead 2-1. I do not have the usual comments from Coach Bishop as he was hospitalized today for some testing and not at the game. He is fine and was texting me while I was at the Sectional Track Meet. He may be able to come home tomorrow. I will update you if we here anything different.

The Girls Track teem took center stage tonight as the Lady Railroaders opened the IHSAA Spring tournament series. The Sectional Track meet was held at East Noble and we had some outstanding performances. We got three girls out in six events. Jordyn Knott got out in the High Jump, Long Jump, and the 300 Hurdles. Laura Moynahan qualified for Regionals in both the Shot Put and the Discus. Ariel McCoy qualified in the 3200m run.  Ariel's race was amazing to match her performances all year. This is her first time to qualify for Regionals in Track. Her race was great. She was completely focused on getting 4th even though she was seeded 8th. She ran her PR and dominated the last last to put no doubt who was qualifying.  Jordyn won the High Jump with a State Qualifying jump of 5'4.25". She also gave the states best hurdler a run for her money. She was tied with her through the first half of the race. She ended up s2nd. Laura set PR's in both the Shot and Disc with throws of 37'3 and 112'5.

Anything can happen next week with a state finals berth on the line. These 3 girls are competitors and will be ready. The entire team had great PR's tonight. The 400 relay team was just 2 seconds from qualifying. They all had a great effort. We had many PR's. That's what you train for all year.  Good Job Coaches and Athletes.

The Baseball team had the night off. BUT, the IHSAA Sectional draw took place in Indianapolis. Here is the Draw for our Sectional. All the games will be played here in Garrett.

Wednesday Night - Game #1  - Dwenger vs Concordia - 5pm

                                Game #2 - Garrett vs Woodlan- 7pm

Good Luck Railroaders in the Tournament!

Last week of Regular Season!

The Baseball team hosted the Fremont Eagle tonight to start the last week of the Regular Season. Brett Schendel was back on the mound and pitched pretty good through 6 innings. He scattered the hits early but Fremont was able to get 2 runs across. We had chances with runners in scoring position but could only manage one run. Brett had a rough 7th inning and gave up 4 more runs. We couldn't do anything in the bottom of the 7th and lost 6-2. James Weber had a great night at the plate going 3 for 3. Logan Casselman was 2 for 3.

The Baseball Draw is tomorrow morning and we will post the draw as we get them. We will host the 3A Sectional which will be played on May 23rd, 24th, and 28th.

The Softball team traveled to Central Noble to take on the Lady Cougars. Her are Coach Bishop's comments:

We lost to Central Noble 6-2 once again our pitching wasn't bad, but our defense was down committing 3 errors which resulted in 5 unearned runs. Hannah McCoy lead Garrett with 2 hits and Katie DePew, Macy Sturges,Ashley Morris and Rachel Stafford had one hit each. Staffords hit drove in both of our runs. Yarian takes the loss.

The Girls Track Sectional is at East Noble tomorrow night. Good Luck Ladies!

Delayed Golf Results

I just found out Coach Kleeman went home sick from the golf tournament on Saturday. Now it makes sense why I didnt get results to share with you. Here they are. Our Golfers have the ACAC championship on Saturday. It looks like we are ready to go. Steve - sorry for the delay in giving you the results in the match. The match was played at Glendarin Hills in Angola. This is a newer golf course with some generous fairways but very subtle greens that take some getting used to. This is not a golf course that a player can just go out and slap it around and expect to score well. Our players came in with a very respectable score of 335 which tied us for 3rd place but we place 4th using the 5th man score. Cameron came through with a nice round of 81 which I feel is his best 18 hole round of the year (so far). Cam has been working on his tempo all year and is finally starting to get some favorable results. Bennett continues to strike the ball from tee to green as well as anyone in the area (if not the state) but is having trouble getting putts to fall. He is burning the edges but they just will not drop in the hole. However, there is one thing I do know about this game and that is if you keep on putting the effort in, the results will eventually come. Also Karsten had a very good day. He had never played this course before and shot a 82 which I think is an outstanding score. Looking at our stats for the year, Coop started the year with a 90 at Noble Hawk, shot 81 at Brookwood, and a 83 at Limberlost. These are all courses that he has played before. Nice round Coop.

 Team results: DeKalb - 326 Lakeland - 331 Angola Gold - 338 (3rd using 5th player score) Garrett - 338 East Noble - 341 (5th using 5th player score) Fairfield - 341 Fremont - 358 West Noble - 364 Angola Purple - 381 Westview - 384 Hamilton - 390 Central Noble - 407

 Top Individual scores: 1 - Spencer Mortola (Lakeland) 74 2 - Troy Chappell (DeKalb) 77 3 - Bennett Rieke - 78 10 - Cameron Stockdale - 81

Team Scores for Garrett: Bennett Rieke - 78 Karsten Cooper - 82 Cameron Stockdale - 81 Noah Getts - 103 Zach Sarrazine - 97 Thanks Coach Kleeman

Saturday Athletic Results

Here's what I have so far:

The Boys traveled to Colunbia City to take on the Ealges Baseball team today in a doubleheader. The Railroaders split. In the first game Garrett won 8-4. Noah Follett picked up the win and Weber got the save. In game 2 the Railroaders couldn't hit the ball and lost 8-1.

The Softball team made up a game against Busco and lost 3-0. Here are Coach Bishops comments:

Garrett v.s. Churubusco We lost 3-0.  On a beautiful morning we once again were not ready to play on the first pitch We made 2 errors and a wild pitch allowing 2 runs to score , 1 FROM SECOND BASE!! We had 4 errors on the day and probably could have had 6. We simply didn't play defense. Our bats were silent as well. We had 5 hits, 2 by freshman Amber Poling, 1 by Sophomore Rachel Stafford (a double) , Sophomore Macy Sturges had a double and Freshman Emily Somers a single. Sturges went the distance and pitched fairly well scattering 5 singles along the way, walking 2, striking out 3,overall our hitting was dismal at best.

ACAC Track Meet

The Railroaders had a great night at the ACAC Track meet in Bluffton. The weather was perfect and we had some fantastic results.

The Boys team finished 3rd and were led by Todd Frickey who had a first place in the 100m with a time of 10.83. That was a new meet record.. He got 1st place in the 200m setting a new SCHOOL record of 22.40. That backs up his time at the last home meet of the year.. But, he wasn't done there. He also got first place in the 400m tonight in a time of 51.1.  That triple victory is one of the toughest in track. He ran a total of 6 races including his leg of the 4x400. Great job Todd and good luck in the IHSAA tournament series over the next several weeks.

Jaron Somers got 2nd place in both the 1600m and 3200m runs. We also have some great expectations for him over the next several weeks. Drake Landes got 2nd in Long Jump and Rober Deventer got second in the Discus.  Our boys really had a great meet tonight and defeated some teams who beat us in the regular season. We have gotten better and Coach Clifford can be proud of what he has done with the team this year.

The girls also had a great night.  Jordyn Knott is winding down her high school track career and getting geared up for her College Track debut at Purdue. But, her focus tonight was on the ACAC. She won the High Jump and the 300 Hurdles. Her jump of 5-5 in High Jump is the state qualifying height. It should really give her confidence in working toward the state meet. Laura Moynahan also had a great night. She won both Shot and Disc. Ariel McCoy placed in all 4 distance events with a 4th, 4th, 8th, and 3rd. She ran the 3200 Relay, 1600, 800, and the 3200 tonight. Just like Todd, that is a tough combination. She earned a lot of points for the team tonight. Brandi Dawson placed in the 100, 200, 400, and the 3200 relay. She had 4th, 7th, 6th, and 8th. Jordyn placed in both jumps, the 300 hurdles, and the 200. The team also placed 3rd in the meet.

I am looking forward to the Sectional meets which begin next week. The girls travel to East Noble on Tuesday Night and the Boys travel to Angola on Thursday. Both meets begin at 5pm.  Good Luck teams and individuals as we work toward the State meet in Bloomington.

Softball Sectional and ACAC Baseball/Softball Results

The Lady Railroaders won their final ACAC Softball game tonight defeating Heritage  7-1. Great night for the team. Here are Coach Bishops comments:

Garrett v.s. Heritage we won 7-1. Brit Yarian pitched 7 innings and got the win by walking none, striking out 11  and giving up 7 hits. On offense we had 7 hits and struck with 4 runs in the 3rd inning. Katie DePew singled with one out followed  by an error on Ashley Morriss ground ball. Annessa Smith then doubled in DePew  and Stafford walked. Amber Poling then doubled in Morris and Emily Somers had a sac fly scoring Stafford. We then scored 3 in the 5th  on a lead off single by DePew, again advancing to 3rd on a ground out and wild pitch. She then scored on Annessa Smithes sac fly and then Stafford walked. Amber Poling then hit her first career HOME RUN, a 2 run shot over the left field fence to end the scoring. With the win we finish 5 & 2 in the conference winning the last 5 games and finish in 2nd place. Nice job ladies!!!!! Scott Bishop
Also the IHSAA held the softball draw this afternoon and the Lady Railroaders will take on the tough Lady Warriors of Woodlan in the bye game. The schedule is:

In game #1 Angola will face Bishop Dwenger. Game #2 will have the Lady Lions of Leo face Concordia. The winner of those two games will face each other in game #3 and the Lady Railroaders will take on Woodlan in game #4.  I BELIEVE we will play in the second game of the night on Tuesday at Leo. I will give more details as I get them. The games begin on Monday, May 21st.

Good Luck Lady Railroaders. We will have to play great softball but we can certainly win this tournament!

The Baseball team suffered a tough 1-0 loss tonight to Heritage. Andrew Robinson had another great night on the mound with 9 K's and only 1 walk. However, it was that one walk that scored the only run of the game. Offensively the Railroaders just couldn't get a run across. We left 7 runners on base.  We are banged up and don't have our regular line-up. With that in mind we haven't played poorly, we just havent' taken advantage of our opportunities. We re-group and go to Columbia City on Saturday for a twin bill against the Eagles.

On a side note: Thanks to Carter LaMotte for helping me in the concession tonight. He is a great young man and a very hard worker!

ACAC Double Victory

The Railroaders got double victories tonight as the ACAC Baseball and Softball season heads into the last week. Both teams defeated Southern Wells at home tonight. Here are the details:

From Coach Bishop:
"Garrett v.s. Southern Wells  After having a good pratcie on Monday we came out flat as a pancake on game day. Our hitting approach remains a mistery to the coaches. Neither team really had a scoring threat until we  broke through in the 5th inning. Freshman Kayla Morrow pinch hit for the pitcher Macy Sturges and lined a double over the left fielders head with one out. Sturges came back in to run for Morrow and came over to 3rd when a ground ball was thrown to first for a out. They then tried to get the runner at 3rd and it got away scoring Sturges. In the 6th Rachel Stafford started off with a double to center, was bunted to 3rd by Emily Somers, and came home on an error . Macy Sturges went the distance on the mound and got the win 2 doubles and 3 singles which were scattered through out the game. She walked one and struck out 6. Amber Poling had 2 singles, but was stranded on base each time. Better lucky than good as the saying goes and that applied tonight for sure. The Final Score was 2-0 Garrett. The team takes on Heritage on Thursday night in the final ACAC game of the season. Good Luck Lady Railroaders.

Softball Invite -- Mixed Results

The day didn't start out that great for the Lady Railroaders losing in the first game to Bishop Dwenger, 6-0. It became obvious that this was the day for the Lady Saints. They defeated Manchester in game 2 and won the Championship game (14-3) in 5 innings against Elkhart Memorial. The Lady Railroaders bounced back and defeated Manchester 6-1 in the consolation game. Here are Coach Bishop's comments:

"Garrett v.s. B Dwenger. We made 2 errors in 1st inning allowing 2 runs, they had 1 run in 3rd, 5th and 2 more in 6th, on 2 more errors for a total 0f 6 runs. We struck out 12 times and really never threathened the whole game . We were over matched by their pitcher. We had 3 hits total and that will simply not get the job done!. Rachel Stafford who has been swinging a hot bat, had one hit. Macy Sturges had a bunt single and Emily Somers had the other hit. Sturges started and went the distance giving up 8 hits  6 runs ONLY 2 earned. She walked 2 and struck out 4. Not being ready to play the 1st inning remains a problem for us. final Bishop Dwenger 6 - Garrett 0."

"Garrett vs. Manchester. Manchester was without their head coach after getting tossed in the 1st game and we scored 2 times in the first on  a walk and 2 sacrifice flies. Then Rachel Stafford connected for her 3rd HOME RUN of the season over the left field fence, nice job Rachel!!! We scored 2 more in the 2nd on a Brit Yarian single followed by a bunt single by Hannah McCoy.  Then a 1 run single by Ashley Morris and Anessa Smith grounded to short scoring McCoy. We scored 2 in the 6th when Emily Somers started with a single and sac bunt by Sturges. McCoy then drove in Somers and McCoy scored on an error. We played errorless ball and didn't strike out. We MUST do this against our sectional opponents if we are to succeed in sectionals. Brit Yarian went the distance striking out 10 walking none and giving up 7 hits. Our pitching at this point is not the problem, but self confidence and execution remains a large part of our play. We are currently 11 wins and 9 losses for the season and will conclude conference play next week with Southern Wells here on Tuesday and Heritage here on Thursday both at 6pm starts."

Good Luck Lady Railroaders!

Golf Match Change and Softball Game Rescheduled

The Garrett vs Bishop Dwenger Golf match added to the schedule for Monday, May 7th has been moved to Wednesday, May 9th at 3:45pm. The move was done so our GREAT SENIOR GOLFERS can participate in the Garrett Senior Awards Night.  Please accept my apology for the change and confusion. I woke up at 3AM the other night realizing the error. Sorry!

The Softball game at Churubusco has been rescheduled. The Lady Railroaders will travel to play the Eagles on Saturday, May 12th. This will be a single game starting at 10am. The game will be restarted.

We have not heard anything about rescheduling the Central Noble Baseball game or the Concordia Softball game that had to be cancelled tonight due to the conference games.

Baseball and Softball beat the Starfires!

Tonight was a beautiful night for baseball and softball, in more ways than one. The weather was great and the results matched.

The Boys Baseball Team defeated South Adams by the final score 13-4. We had a great night offensively.  We had 13 runs on 14 hits. We took over the game right away putting up 3 runs in the first inning. We slowly built the lead with Andrew Robinson on the mound. Andrew struggled with control in the 4th inning giving up 4 runs on only one hit. At that point it was 7-4. But, we weren't done offensively. Andrew Robinson had a great night on the mound (getting the win) and at the plate. He went 2-3,  James Weber was 2-3, Brandon Porter 3-4 with a double, Andrew Johnson 2-4 with a double, Noah Follett 2-3 with a double, Garrett Moon 2-4 with a double. We had 4 doubles for the night. Our top of the order really hit the ball well tonight.

The Lady Railroader Softball team got another win tonight against a good ACAC opponent. Here are the comments from the Coach:
"We got behind 1-0 in the 3rd We went ahead for good with 2 runs in the 4th on Annessa Smith's single and Emily Somers hit-by-pitch. That was followed by Rachel Staffords single. A groundout by Sam Yoder produced a run. We scored 2 more in the 6th with Stafford getting her 2nd hit. She advanced on a pass ball and scored on an error on Yoder's ground ball . Yoder later scored our 4th run when Amber Poling hit a soft ground ball to 1b. Stafford had 2 hits as did Katie DePew who had 3 seeing eye dog hits. Annessa Smith had one hit. We were flat after last night and will have to really step it up for Saturday's games. A win is a win and we will take it. Our defense was tested and played well with Brit Yarian going the distance and pitching a good game giving up 4 hits, striking out 4, walking none, and retiring the last 12 batters in a row.

The Annual Garrett Invitational Softball Tournament is tomorrow. Garrett and Bishop Dwenger will start the day at 10am. The second game will see Manchester take on Elkhart Memorial. The consolation game is at 2pm. THe Championship game is at 4pm. You can use your Big Train ticket to get into the game. Come out to support the 2012 Softball team.

Softball-- WIld Game Details!

Here are Coach Bishops Comments:

"Another long trip this time to Bluffton. WWOWWWW!!!! what a game. We got the lead with 1 run in the 1st and they tied it. We got 1 run in the 3rd and then they posted 6 runs in the 4th to take a 7-2 lead. We came back with 1 run in the 5th and 3 more in the 6th. Then tied it up at 7 in the 7th with 1 more run. It remained that way until the 10th inning when Ashley Morris lead off with her 5th hit of the game. We scored 2 runs in the 10th when Sam Yoder drove in 2 runs with 2 outs. The defense held in the 10th to get away with a hard earned victory, 9-7.

The game saw Garrett with 19 hits and Bluffton with 12 hits. Macy Sturges went into the 4th and then gave up 5 hits and Brit Yarian replaced her. Yarian gave up 1 more run , so Bluffton tallied 6 runs that inning. Yarian settled in and held them scoreless with some outstanding defensive plays behind her. The girls never gave up and scratched out runs  enough to tie the game and put it away in the 10th.

Ashley Morris had 2 doubles and 3 singles while Emily Somers had 3 hits.  Rachel Stafford also got 3 hits. Brit Yarian helped her cause with 3 hits of her own. Katie DePew had 2 hits while Annessa Smith, Sam Yode,r and Amber Poling each had 1 hit.

Truly a team effort by everyone. From the Coaches standpoint it was really nice to see, as they showed some heart and guts tonight to post the conference win. If you weren't there, you missed a great effort by the girls. The will to win was there. OK, we play tomorrow here at 6pm against South Adams. This will be another tough conference game. We will need to bring that will to win again tomorrow. Just a wonderful effort!"

Track Senior Night, Softball, ACAC Golf Wrapup!

Garrett hosted Central Noble tonight in the last home track meet of the 2012 Track Season and the teams are peaking at the right time. Here are the results:

It was also senior night for the Girls Track team. We honored Ariel McCoy, Laura Moynahan, Jordyn Knott, and Caitlyn Przemielewski. The Girls also defeated Central Noble 78-43. Here are Coach Lapadots comments: "Brandi Dawson was dominant tonight winning 4 first place ribbons. I knew she was capable of dominating meets and tonight she had that edge about here that was not going to get beat. She won the 100, 200, 400, and ran on the winning 4x800 team. Also, it was our senior night. I have not coached a better collective group of seniors. They all escelled in different areas for us. Combined they have scored over 260 point for us this year. It's been great to coach them for 4 years and we are hoping the next month holds a lot of great things for them."

                            Brandi Dawson - 100, 200, 400, 4x800
                            Laura Moynahan - shot, discus
Jordyn Knott - HJ, LJ, 300H

Boys Golf

Woodlan hosted Garrett, Heritage and Leo at Pond-A-River golf course in Woodburn on May 3. Here are Coach Kleemans Comments and the results:

"It was a disappointing end to the ACAC regular season but we really played pretty well today. As a team we shot our best score of the year on a golf course that some of our kids had never played. Bennett ties for medalist again, Karsten and Cameron shot well as did Noah and Zach. (Today we shot a 164 while our previous best team score was 165.) In addition, our hats are off to Heritage - there score of 157 is the lowest I've seen at any ACAC match since I've been coaching. They just played better today than we did.

Tomorrow at practice we will discuss our goals for the year which include winning the ACAC conference tournament and qualifying for the regional. There is still a lot of golf to be played this season and this group of kids do not give up."

Thanks

Baseballl at Parkview Field +JV Golf

What a beautiful night at Parkview Field tonight. You could not have picked a more perfect evening to watch ACAC Baseball. The Railroaders faced the Bluffton Tigers tonight in Fort Wayne. Noah Follett cruised through 5 innings giving up only 3 hits. The Railroader bats were good all night and we built a 9-0 lead through 5 innings. Then things started to get a little touch and go. After not issuing a walk, Follett walked a couple batters. Coach Mireles brought in Kylan LaMotte. Kylan threw strikes and really pitched pretty well. The Tigers did not pound him, but they got little "dink" hits here and there. They started to rally and we had a hard time stopping it. By the end of the 6th we had a 9-6 game with the Railroaders still on top. James Weber came in and finished out the 6th inning before coming in to try to close out the game in the 7th. Again, he pitched pretty well throwing a lot of strikes. But the bases got loaded with a couple errors. With 2 outs we had a couple chances to finish them off and couldn't. Bluffton scored two more times to close to 9-8, still with two outs. Weber got the Tigers to ground to Shortstop Logan Casselman who got the unassisted put out at second base to end the game. The team and coaches did a great job keeping focused even when things weren't going well during the game.

No matter how you add it up, we got the win. The perfect Baseball night in a great stadium ended up just how we wanted, with a WIN!

The JV Golfers also had a match tonight. Here are the results. Congrats to Vince Marshall on his medalist honors.

Varsity Softball Game Rescheduled

The Varsity Softball game with Churubusco postponed on Monday has been rescheduled for next Wednesday, May 9th at 5pm.

Please make a special note. That start time is 5pm not 4:30 like it was on Monday.

Tuesday, May 1, 2012

Weather or NOT?

Well, what can I say. The storms that were coming broke up. I know what you're thinking. WHY? Schools, Garrett included,  must make decisions about cancellations of after school activities BEFORE the end of the school day. If we don't it becomes very difficult to notify all the necessary people. Because of the need to cancel 3+ hours before a game, sometimes you have to guess at what it will be like at game time. So, today, we were faced with a radar full of red and yellow storms. We talked with our conference schools and scheduled opponents. We decided to cancel based on what we were seeing. I think it's obvious, we are not great meteorologists! But, I won't apologize erring on the side of the safety of our students. I know it's inconvenient for the parents. Trust me, it's quite a bit of work for the athletic departments also. We don't want to postpone or cancel events if we don't have to. With that said, we have already gotten most of the events rescheduled. Here are the new dates:

The GOLF team will travel to Pond-a-River Golf Course on Thursday to make-up the rescheduled ACAC quad match from tonight. The match will begin at 4:30.

The Baseball and Softball team will host South Adams this coming Friday night. Both games will begin at 6:00pm.  The Softball game with Concordia scheduled for this Friday will be cancelled. If we have a chance we will make it up at the end of the season. We are in the process of rescheduling the Busco and Central Noble games cancelled last night. I will update you when and if that occurs.

The track meet tonight at Woodlan will not be rescheduled. The ACAC Conference Championship is determined by the Conference Track meet scheduled for Friday Night, May 11th. So, we do not have time to reschedule this meet. Both track teams will host Central Noble at home on Thursday night. This is senior night. Senior Parents should be at the TRACK by no later than 4:45pm. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5pm.

Tomorrow the Baseball team will play at Parkview field. The game begins at 4:30. This is done so we can get two games in during the school week and still get the teams home at a reasonable time.  Parkview field is in charge of calling this game due to weather. So, if we have a cancellation, we are at their mercy.

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (4-30-12)

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (4-30-12)
"Promoting education-based athletics in Indiana."

Most student-athletes can perform in the classroom and on the athletic field when things are going well and there doesn't seem to be too much push or pressure from the opposition.

However, when things aren't going as well and you seem to be struggling in the classroom or on the field of play, how do you react?

When the pressure is on and you need to turn it up a notch or two, do you know how to do so?  The best answer to this question is one simple word, preparation. Those who are prepared, whether in the classroom or on the field of play, will do a better job when the pressure is really on.  Preparation will help your confidence and self esteem!
