Great night for Railroaders - track, golf, and baseball

Boys Track Regional

What an up and down night at the IHSAA Regional Track meet at Wayne High School. Drake Landes competed very well in 3 events tonight. He didn't jump as far as he wanted in Long Jump and his 110 Hurdles. He missed the finals in both events. But, he ran his heart out in the 300 hurdles getting his best time of the year. He did not qualify for State but we are very proud of his efforts.

Robert Deventer had a great night in Discus. He has been throwing 159' all year and just couldn't break through to the 160's. But, tonight on his last throw he threw 166'8". That magnificent throw not only earned him a trip to the IHSAA State meet in Bloomington, he also got 2nd place. Robert is one of the nicest young men at GHS and no one has out worked him this year. It is great to see a great student-athlete reap the rewards of his hard work. Now onward to state!

Todd Frickey hates the 200m dash. He loves the shorter 100m race. If he had his way he would have pulled out of the 200 for tonights meet. The track coaches wouldn't let him. I'm glad! Todd, who placed at the state meet last year in the 100, finished a disappointing 4th place tonight. It was very emotional for him, his family, and the coaches. He made it to the finals seeded 3rd but with the strong head wind, he didn't get the finish he wanted. In the 200m he was seeded 6th, without much of a chance getting out. Never say die. Todd ran the race of his life, again against a stiff wind. He broke the school record again in 22.14, placed 2nd, and earned his 2nd straight trip to the IHSAA State Track meet in Bloomington with Robert.  Coach Clifford said that Todd was really down in the dumps after the 100. But, he never gave up and answered with a magnificent race in the 200. Again, it is great to see a great, hard working athlete, get what he deserves. I am so proud of him, the coaching staff, and the families that supported these two lung men. Have fun at State and bring home some hardware!

The Garrett baseball team played in the semifinals tonight against Concordia. We let some key opportunities get away from us early, leaving 7 runners on base and falling behind 3-0. But we fought our way back to tie it in the 6th and then go ahead with a James Weber double. Weber also came in for 3 strong innings and got the win. Brett Schendel was 2 for 4 scoring 2 runs. Weber scored a run on a Homerun in the 5th. His double clinched it. Garrett won 5-3 and moves on to the sectional championship game on Monday at 5:00pm vs Leo. Leo defeated Angola decisively, by the score of 12-1.

 Good luck team!

Boys Golf

The Golfers also played tonight. They traveled to East Noble to test themselves on the sectional course. Here are Coach Kleemans comments: "t appears that the momentum we built last Saturday in the ACAC Conference Tournament did carry over to today's match. Both the varsity and JV teams defeated East Noble and Central Noble on the front 9 at Noble Hawk.

This time it was the underclassmen that led the way. Karsten had a team low 37 which was followed by Zach Sarrazine's 39. These 2 seem to be gaining more confidence in themselves and the team each match. As a coach I couldn't be more pleased with the way they handle themselves on and off the course. Bennett had his first eagle of the year and had a respectable score of 40. And Cam comes in with another 40. Like I said previously, Cam's swing is starting to come together and I look for him to put together a real good sectional score. Jake Stafford and Noah Getts both bounced back with good scores of 43 and 44.

Now for the really good news - our team score of 156 was the best score of the year. In addition, I think it is the best 9 hole team score that the 4 seniors (Bennett, Cam, Jake and Noah) have had in their 4 years. What a nice way for those 4 to finish their regular season careers.

As for the JV team - Freshman Shae Rowlison had a team best 42 and tied for medalist. Vince Marshall turned a real nice 43 after a double bogey 6 on the first hole.

All the kids have worked very hard this spring through some cold, windy, dry conditions. Now we prepare for the Sectional at Noble Hawk on Friday, June 1.
