Saturday -- CC Reg. / VB / BSO Regional Drama!

Today the Cross Country Season for GHS came to a close. Ariel McCoy and Jaron Somers ran at a very tough Cross Country Regional Race today. Ariel finished 38th and Jaron finished 29th. Only the top fifteen and the top five teams move on the Semi-state. Carroll's Boys and Girls teams advanced by winning the meet.

I can't say enough good things about Ariel McCoy and Jaron Somers. I challenge any other sport to claim they train harder than CC Runners. They must run 6-7 days a week all year long, compete in track, summer road races, and CC season meets at least twice a week. No one trains harder or longer than they do. So, when you are a Senior it is likely you have trained for somewhere between 5,000 and 8,000 miles in your career. Both Jaron and Ariel have been committed runners for all four years in high school and achieved regional status throughout their career.  Congrats to both of you on a very successful career and good luck at the collegiate level

The Volleyball team finished the 2011 regular season with another couple of wins out of state. The team traveled to Napolean, Michigan to take on Coach Richardson's old High School. The team finished 5-0 and now they can concentrate on Sectional foe Bishop Dwenger.

Finally, the Boys Soccer Regional concluded tonight here in Garrett. Two private schools faced each other for the second time this season. Bishop Luers and Canterbury played each other the first game of the year to a 0-0 tie. So we were braced for a very intense game. It was intense but the score wasn't even close. The final score was 5-0 in favor of the number one team in the State Canterbury. BUT, the game was exciting because of all the action and rough play on the field. That play carried over to the fans in the stands. I'm not sure either team knows Character Counts Week is coming up this week.  I know people are passionate about their kids. But, I wish they could view these games as their intended. They are High School Sports events trying to promote education through athletics. It's not professional sports or even collegiate sports. Maybe I'm naive to believe that's possible.
It was fun hosting and I hope we are chosen again next year. Good Luck Canterbury at Semi-State.

Garrett VB -- another win!

The Volleyball team defeated Whitko tonight in 3 straight games. With one more game in the regular season, the team is hitting their stride. They travel to Michigan on Saturday to take on Coach Richardson's Alma Mater and a great tune up for sectional. Since we drew the bye, this game is important so we do not have to go without a game for over a week. If you plan on attending, Coach Richardson can give you directions!

Volleyball Sectional Draw & Senior Night.

The IHSAA Tournament draw took place tonight. Garrett will play in the 3A sectional #22. The games are scheduled for Thursday, October 20th and Saturday, October 22nd. Garrett drew the bye game and will play the host Bishop Dwenger Saints on Saturday in the second game. The opening rounds are on Thursday Night. The first game on Thursday will feature the Woodlan Lady Warriors and the Concordia Cadets. In game 2, ACAC Co-Champion Leo will face Angola.  The winners of these two games will face each other on Saturday. That game will start at 11am. The Garrett game will follow that contest.

The Volleyball team concluded their home season tonight hosting the West Noble Chargers. The night was devoted to our 4 seniors, Katie DePew, Myranda Gibson, Jordyn Knott, and Laura Moynahan. These girls have done had wonderful careers at GHS in many sports. But, they have really been leaders in our Volleyball program. We are proud of them and all their accomplishments. They are great athletes, great in the classroom, and great role models for our kids.

Both the JV and the Varsity teams shut our West Noble going 5-0 for the night. Besides Senior Night our game was devoted to raising money for Breast Cancer Awareness. Our girls wore pink spandex and there was a lot of PINK in the stands. Prizes were given away, a silent auction was held, and all of tonight's profits will go to Breast Cancer Research. Coach Richardson did a great job planning this night for a very worthwhile cause. We also want to thank all the area businesses who donated prizes and financial support for this cause!

VB Tourney at Whitko!

The Girls VB team went into the Whitko Tourney a little down from the ACAC Tourney. But, they battled to defeat  Prairie Heights, North Miami, and Columbia City to make it to the Championship game. The Lady Railroaders met the cross County rival Lady Barons and were defeated in 2 games, 17-25 and 21-25. We might have played our best games earlier in the day and didn't play our best in the championship.

The Lady Railroaders have one week to prepare for the Sectional Tournament. They will face West Noble at Senior Night on Monday, travel to Whitko on Tuesday, and then travel to Napolean, Michigan to take on Coach Richardson's High School team next Saturday.  All of these games will help prepare us for the tough sectional tournament at Bishop Dwenger.

We are a good team and facing the tough competition will do us good. Even in the defeat today, we are working toward the goal of a sectional championship.  Good Luck Coach Richardson and the VB team as they head to the IHSAA tournament.

Ups and Downs! Scoreboard!

The Boys and Girls Cross Country teams did a great job at the ACAC meet tonight. The Boys Team finished 2nd avenging a loss to Leo and only loosing to South Adams. Jaron Somers and Kendall Slabaugh BOTH were first team all-conference. Jaron finished 4th and Kendall finished 6th. The Girls Team finished 5th behind Leo, South Adams, Southern Wells, and Adams Central. Both Ariel McCoy and Amanda Stump were on the All-Conference 2nd team. With the 10th place finish Ariel McCoy was All-Conference all four years of her high school career. WOW! Congrats! Also Freshman Amanda Stump also earned All-Conference 2nd team honors by finishing in 9th place.  Great Job Runners, now get ready for Sectionals!

The Volleyball team suffered 2 tough losses tonight against LEO, again. After leading in both games by 5 points we lost 26-24 and 25-23. Leo just has too many weapons! We might get another shot at them in Sectional. Maybe 3rd times a charm!

NOW FOR THE HEADLINE OF THE NIGHT!

The Garrett Girls Soccer team battled Central Noble tonight to end the regulation game tied 2-2. Then came two more halves of Overtime. The Score was still 2-2. Then the shoot out began and Garrett came out on top winning the first round sectional game. What an exciting night. That is only GHS's second win in the IHSAA Sectional tournament. Now the girls will face West Noble on Thursday Night at 5pm. Great work Coach Yarde and Lady Railroaders!

Tomorrow everyone needs to head to Hamilton to Support our Boys Soccer team as they challenge the tough Lakewood Park Soccer Team. I've got a great feeling about this team. Go Railroaders!

ACAC VB Champions!

Tonight the Volleyball team finished the ACAC Regular Season 6-1 and were in a 3 way tie on top of the ACAC. So, they are Co-Champions in the ACAC.  This is our first ACAC VB championship and our first conference championship since 1993. I guess we need another Banner!

Tonight they played a fantastic game, completely dominating a VERY good Heritage team, 25-17, 25-15, 25-12. We honored Jordyn Knott and Katie DePew before the game because of the records they have set this year. Katie DePew got her 1000th assist earlier in the season and Jordyn Knott got her 1000th kill last week. Both of these girls and senior Laura Moynahan have been major contributors to this program. Laura is close to breaking the single season record for digs (held by Katie Depew). Tonight all of these girls played with a lot of passion and never lost the momentum tonight!

We are so proud of these girls and wish them the best in the ACAC tournament next week. Roll Big Train!

Rainy Senior Night and Volleyball

Tonight we honored our Senior Girls Soccer players in their final home game of the regular season. Aubrey Bevilaqua, Katrina Miller, Miranda Miller, Allie Murley, and Mary Mix were recognized at  the rainy halftime festivities. We are proud of these girls for their efforts and dedication to GHS Soccer. We also are grateful for the parents and their support over the last 4 years. We wish them all the Luck as they pursue their careers outside of GHS.

The Girls lost to Blackhawk 7-1. The game was delayed for an injured Blackhawk player. It appeared she would be alright but she was transported for precautionary reasons. But, keep her and her family in your prayers as the doctors make sure she is ok. If we get an update. I will post it here.

The Girls Volleyball team traveled to Angola tonight and were defeated in 3 straight games. Angola is a potential sectional opponent. Coach Richardson has some work to do to prepare the team for a busy end of the season.

Another Good Night!

The Boys and Girls Cross Country traveled all the way to Poneto to Southern Wells High School to run against Southern Wells and Woodlan in an ACAC meet. The Boys dominated the race placing Jaron Somers, Kendall Slabaugh, and Jordan Lantz going 1-2-3. The Boys defeated both SW and Woodlan.

The girls are fighting through some injuries but still ended up defeating Woodlan. Ariel McCoy had a great race and finished 3rd in the race. Amanda Stump also had a good race. They lost to Southern Wells but when they get healthy they can defeat them at the ACAC meet in a couple of weeks.

The Volleyball team also won tonight defeating the Starfires at South Adams in 4 games. The Scores were 25-10. 23-25, 25-17, 25-12.  Coach Richardson wasn't happy with the performance, but was happy with the outcome.

The Boys Soccer game at Eastside was postponed to tomorrow due to poor field conditions. The Boys are working at breaking the school record for wins. Go Railroaders!

Monday Scoreboard

Tonight the Boys Soccer team and the Volleyball teams dominated!

The Boys Soccer team hosted the Prairie Heights Panthers and defeated them soundly 6-0. The win ties the most number of wins in school history for the Boys soccer program. But, we have more season left and plans on advancing in the IHSAA tournament.

The Volleyball team also dominated tonight defeating Lakeland in 3 straight games. The JV team also won in 2 games. Everyone contributed tonight and its the type of win which is good for the entire program.

Saturday Results

The Volleyball team traveled to Wawasee for a tournament this morning. They started off slow and were defeated by Elkhart Christian. Then, after waking up, they defeated Columbia City and Wabash. We ended up defeating the host Warriors to take third place. Jordyn Knott was placed on the All- Tourney team.

The Boys and Girls Cross Country team competed at West Noble today. With more than 30 teams competing, the boys and girls finished 15th and 17th respectively. The top runners for Garrett were Amanda Stump (38th) and Jaron Somers (29th). Kendal Slabaugh and Ariel McCoy also placed high. A lot of really good teams compete at West Noble and we will be back there in a few weeks for sectionals and regionals.

It's late but I do have scores!

I just got home but still wanted to share about tonight's scores.

The Volleyball team fell to Leo tonight before a great and enthusiastic Railroader Crowd. We got swept in 3 games but we really battled in every game. Coach Richardson was fired up tonight but she couldn't get the troops rallied or the officials corralled to pull in the victory. Leo is a very good team but I still left with the feeling we should have beaten them. We will see them again in the ACAC tournament.  We are still tied for first place in the ACAC and if we win out we will still be Co-Regular Season Champions.

The Girls Soccer team also played tonight and they DEFEATED Lakewood Park by a score of 2-1. I don't know who scored. But, wins have been hard to come by so we can get really excited about another victory!

Another ACAC Win!

Well it wasn't pretty. But, it counts the same in the Win column. Garrett defeated a good Adams Central team tonight in 5 games. Adams Central won the first game easily. We won the second game easily. They won game 3 and we won game 4. Game 5 was close until the end but we came out on top.

Next Up Leo! They are a really good team and we need to make sure everyone is there to help support our Volleyball program in its quest for an ACAC Championship!

Tuesday Scoreboard

Boys Soccer remained undefeated in the ACAC by defeating South Adams 6-0 tonight in Garrett.  This sets up a big show down with Leo on September 12th for what will more than likely be the Conference Championship. That game will be in Garrett. Put it on your schedule now and come out to support the Railroader Soccer team.

The Girls Soccer team was defeated tonight by the Lady Hornets of Angola. The team has been struggling this year. But, they are also overwhelmed with key injuries. They are working hard and need to keep their heads up. Better days are ahead!

Season Openers - VB - BSO!

The Boys Soccer team started the 2011-2012 Athletic season tonight hosting the Knights of East Noble High School. The game was close through the first half, but the young Railroaders were defeated by the final score of 4-1. The lone goal for the Railroaders was scored by Nathan Sliger.  The Boys Travel to Lakeland on Thursday. The varsity will play at 5pm and the JV boys will play a half of soccer after the Varsity game.

The Volleyball team hosted the Lady Barons of Dekalb High School tonight in the "Warm" Bateman gym. The Railroaders led by Jordyn Knott, Katie DePew, and Laura Moynahan dominated the Barons. The Lady Railroaders swept Dekalb in 3 games. We are not sure when Garrett last defeated the Barons. It has been a long time. What a great start to the season. But, there is no rest for the VB team as they host Prairie Heights tomorrow and then travel to Churubusco on Thursday. Congrats Coach Richardson and the Lady Railroaders!

Seasons Begin

This week marks the beginning of the 2011-2012 Athletic Season.  Football, Volleyball, and Soccer have gotten their Pre-season games out of the way and now we start the real deal. The Volleyball team and the Boys Soccer team start the season on Tuesday this week. With the Volleyball team taking on the cross county rival Dekalb Lady Barons and the Boys Soccer team will face East Noble. Both games are at home. The Volleyball team will also host Prairie Heights on Wednesday before traveling to Churubusco on Thursday. The Girls Soccer team hosts the Columbia City Lady Eagles on Thursday night while the Boys travel to Lakeland to continue their season.  Then the Varsity Football team travels to Eastside to take on the Blazers in the season opener this Friday night.

As you can see, the first week is filled with some great sporting events. Come on out and support your Railroaders as the seasons get under way.

Volleyball / Football Entrances / Team Pick-up and Drop-Off

Volleyball and Football Games Parking at GHS

The NEW Garrett High School construction project is well under way. With the new construction comes many challenges. One of those is parking for Athletic Events as well as athlete pick-up and drop off. All High School Volleyball  and Football games will be affected.  Below are the open entrances for Fall Athletic Events.

Volleyball -    The only entrance open for Varsity and JV Volleyball games will be door #10. This door is also known as the Performing Arts Center (PAC) entrance. There will be no entry at Door #3 North of the gym or at Door #23, the old “railroader track” entrance. Parking for the games will include the Performing Arts Center lot, the East middle school lot, and the Ober Faculty lot. ALL entry will be done through door #10. You will not be able to walk through the middle school to attend any high school athletic event.

Football – The entrance to Memorial Field for both visiting and home fans will be through the EAST gate at the field. Home fans will walk around the track to the North in order to get to the home side stands. Visitors and Home fans will use the same gate. Parking will be available in the Middle School South Lot, the Middle School East Lot,  the Performing Arts Center lot, and the Ober Elementary staff parking lot. Parking on Britton street will no longer be convenient for home fans as there will not be a gate on the North or West side of the field. Parking will not be allowed along the driveway off of Warfield Street. Overflow parking will be at the Soccer field across from the GKB Central Office.

Team Drop-off and Pick-up – Teams playing contests on the road will be dropped off on the North side of the school at Door #3. This entrance is accessible to parents from Houston street and is located between the Ober Elementary and the High School.

Wow!

What a great volleyball game tonight.  Very intense from start to finish. Garrett Girls battled the entire game and came up just short of a sectional championship. We lost the first game 25-18. Then we won the next 2 games 25-23 and 28-26. We lost the 4th game 21-25, (we should have won this one!) Then we lost the final game 7-15.

Prairie Heights is a very good volleyball team. We played hard and matched them player by player, point for point, and oh yea Coach to Coach. Sallie did a great job in her first year as head coach. I couldn't be more happy with the way she handled this team and the competitiveness she brings to the program. We finished with the second best record in Garrett History. 22-10.  She and her team have raised the expectations for GHS Volleyball. Great Season! Too bad we didn't get the hardware to back it up.

2 week Run!

I know it's not a "streak" yet! But we are getting on a roll with our stellar defense. The Railroaders beat up on Central Noble with a 42-13 win. The 13 points were scored late in the game, long after the final chapter was written tonight.

We are on the road next week to Butler, Indiana as the Eastside Blazers defeated Prairie Heights 18-12 in the rematch of last week. I guess we call this "Train Game" part 2! We need to stay focused and take care of business. They are better than the first game of the year, but so are we. Game will be AT Eastside and will once again start at 7:30 p.m.

Good Luck to the Lady Railroaders tomorrow as we have our work cut out for us defeating a very good Eastside Volleyball team and then defeating PH or CN. I have all  the confidence in Coach Richardson and the might Railroader Volleyball team. Game begins at approximately 12:30pm tomorrow in the Bateman Gym.

Season Finales!

The Boys and Girls Cross Country teams wrapped up their seasons tonight with the Sectional meet at West Noble. The girls finished 7th and the boys 11th. The night was hot and the competition was even hotter. THe lone bright spot in the night was Ariel McCoy who placed 14th and qualified as an individual for the Regional Meet this Saturday also at West Noble. I have said it before and want to say again how proud I am of our kids and coaches. We have two very young teams who really had very little career mileage. In Cross Country, Career miles is everything. Both Coach Minton and Rhoades brought these kids a long way. Great season. We look for more in the future.

The Girls Soccer team also ended their season with a hard fought match against Dekalb at Dekalb. We lost by a score of 4-2. Heather House scored our two goals in the first half. We were tied at halftime but were unable to score in the second half. We had a lot of hardworking seniors on this team and we are proud of their effort. I think their final record was 11-6!  Congrats to Coach Yarde and VanGessel for a great season.

The Volleyball team ended their regular season with a decisive victory over Whitko (25-16, 25-15, and 25-22) This was senior night and also our Breast Cancer Awareness game. Coach Richardson did a great job raising money for a very worthy cause. She has done a wonderful job with our team and ends the regular season with a great 21-9 record. Now focus on a sectional championship!
