Scores and Powder Puff Football!

The Volleyball  went north tonight to Hamilton to take on the Lady Marines.  They dominated the games winning the JV 25-22, 25-6 and the Varsity won 25-11, 25-12, and 25-6.  I would say that is complete domination.

The only other game on tap tonight was the Boys Soccer game at Columbia City.  The Eagles soundly defeated the Railroaders 10-nil.  Now the Boys can concentrate on a game plan to defeat Lakewood Park in the first round of Sectionals.

The Homecoming Powder Puff and Snake Dance were tonight. The Senior girls defeated the freshman girls. The Juniors defeated the sophomores and in the championship game the Seniors defeated the Juniors. I'm not going to say anything else about the games except THANKS Mrs. Maksimchuck and Mrs. Wright for all your hardwork and efforts to plan all of the Homecoming events. It is a lot of work and we appreciate your dedication to organizng fun activities for our students! WE ARE A CHARACTER COUNTS SCHOOL!

  1. Coach K said he was proud of the Boys team tonight. It was 2-0 at the half and 4-0 with 15 minutes to play. He took out several starters to let the younger kids play and to keep from injuring our players for sectionals. He said CC kept their starters in. Character Counts!

  2. Columbia City proved it could move the ball past a very young team, with two of the four Juniors, and a core of the defense, out with injury. CC proved it could continue to do this with 0:10 left in the game and ahead by 10-0. The CC coach also proved that I am glad my son plays for Garrett and Coach K, and not for CC.

The issue of blowout wins is one I'd like to see addressed by the coaching staffs and athletic directors across the region. At some point - 5-0, 6-0 - it becomes pointless to continue to run up a score. It's not good for the team being abused, it's not good for the sport, and perhaps most importantly, it's not good for the team that's doing the abusing.

Principals should know that the schools are impacted by the behavior. I left Columbia City (and have left Lakewood Park too) with a sense of unwillingness to ever want to do the school any kind of favor, and wanting to have as little to do with their programs as possible. Sports can, and often does, bring together our communities. Abuse drives us apart.

Some might say that Dekalb's game of keep-away in their own defensive end was a way to prevent a run-up. Maybe so, but it was, in its own way, an arrogant and disrespectful statement and not welcome.

The best example I ever saw in Soccer of slowing down the score, but respecting an opponent, was from Canterbury several years ago. By any measure, Canterbury is an elite program and could have scored at will on Garrett. Instead, after getting a lead, they required that everyone touch the ball before a shot could be taken, all shots came outside the 18, and nothing was shot from directly in front of the net. It provided a workout for Canterbury, gave Garrett a chance to play the ball, and left everyone understanding that soccer is a great game, and glad we had a chance to play that day.

Until and unless coaches and AD's get together to discuss this, nothing will ever change.

  3. Thanks for your input. I am with you 100%. As AD's we do discus these situations. It is the most difficult thing to do to win gracefully. I also hate it when teams embarass an opponent by "passing the ball around". I still believe the best approach is to make sure your starters are out, switch positions around, and work on developing other players.
