Day #1 Sectional 22 - 99!

Day #1 at the Garrett 3A Sectional -- Points, Points and more Points!

I saw very little defense tonight in the Paul Bateman Gymnasium as three of the four teams scored over 80 points and one almost broke the century mark. In game #1, the offense minded Leo Lions scored 83 points but Concordia put up 99 and could have had well over 100 if they wanted to. In game #2, Angola put up 81 points while Woodlan only managed 65. Poor Bob Novy, voice of the Railroaders, had virtually no time off between shots and his vocal chords got a major workout. Leo, Concordia, and Angola all had 4 players in double figures.

If someone could just learn to play defense on Friday Night, the outcome could be quite different. I am a firm believer that Defense wins championships. I don't care what sport it is. If you play good solid defense, you will win most of your games. Garrett and Bishop Dwenger will have there chance to prove defense is the key to victory.

Friday Night the Railroaders will take on Concordia in game one, starting at 6pm. Game 2 will feature the Bishop Dwenger Saints taking on the Angola Hornets. That game should begin around 7:30pm.
Good Luck Railroaders, remember Defense Wins Championships!

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (2-27-12)

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (2-27-12)
"Providing education-based athletics in Indiana."

Almost all high schools today have codes of conduct that student-athletes must follow in order to be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities, including sports.

Therefore, you already know what you can and cannot do and how you will be punished if you decide not to follow those rules.  In other words, the school spells out right from wrong.

Following rules, then, should not be an issue.  You start the process of rule following early in life, and to be honest, rule following never goes away.  If you look for shortcuts or knowingly do something wrong, be prepared to pay the consequences.

Frickey Leads to Victory at Manchester!

It's a long bus trip. It was senior night at Manchester. It was Hall of Fame night. They had a flash mob dance that was way cool before the game. But, the Railroaders owned the Basketball game tonight! The Boys Basketball team ended the regular season with a victory on the road over the Squires. The Game started out all Railroaders as the team led by 10 (31-21) at the half. The third quarter was all Squires as they came out inspired. At the end of the quarter they had scored 21 more points and we only had 11, tied at 42-42. The 4th quarter was ours and we held off the home team for a 56-51 win.

Todd Frickey had a career high 18 points and was consistent all night long. Drake had 13 points and Casselman had 12. It was great to see so many contributing again. The victory tonight was for the entire team. Matt Singleton continues to improve. Joe Martin also had key minutes. The guys off the bench also had a good night. Zack Sarrazine and Vince Marshall had some key shots late in the fourth quarter to also contribute to the win. Even our rock solid Student Cheer Section added to the outcome. There weren't many of them, but they held there own as they were considerably outnumbered! Thanks Connor, Chase, Tyler, and Alex! Go Railroaders!

Now all our concentration is on the Sectional Tournament. The Railroaders will have extra time to prepare as they go the bye and will play the winner of Leo vs Concordia. That game will be played on Friday Night at 6pm. I can't wait to see the  Railroaders fight for another sectional crown. Go Railroaders!

63-58

The Boys Basketball team had their chances tonight. We fell behind by over 9 points on several occasions. We then would charge back and make it a game. But in the end the Railroaders didn't have enough for a pretty good Lakewood Park Program.

As usual we battle for every point and possession we can get. Matt Singleton had a great night tonight, scoring 16 points. That is something we need more often. Drake had 17 points to help the Railroaders. We really had a poor first half especially on the Boards. We gave way too many second and third shots. Our defense was good but we had too many holes that gave up some easy buckets.

We have one more game to get us heading the right direction in the post season. The Railroaders make their first trip to Norht Manchester to take on the Squires.  There are many ways to get there. I and going to take i-69 to Highway 24 toward Huntington. Then before I get to Roanoke I will head west on Indiana 114. That will take you all the way to North Manchester. Once you get into town their are plenty signs to get you to the High School. If you have difficulty finding it, the High School is located near the college.

Good Luck Railroaders!

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (2-20-12)

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (2-20-12)
"Providing education-based athletics in Indiana."

By now, everyone who follows sports has heard of Jeremy Lin of the New York Knicks. This time ten days ago nobody knew a thing about this young man. Today, he is the talk of the national sports world.

All athletes, especially those that are backups, dream of getting quality playing time with their teams.  You hear it all the time, if only coach would give me a chance.  Well, this story might get coaches thinking about who could be the next Jeremy Lin.

You never know when your number will be called.  Just know that Lin was passed up numerous times, yet he never gave up on believing in himself and his abilities.

Lee 3rd in State!

Hayden Lee wrestled to 5-2 victory over ACAC rival, Sawyer Miller just minutes ago. Hayden took a commanding 4-0 lead through two periods and cruised home placing 3rd in the IHSAA tournament. He ties for the highest place finish of any GHS wrestler (Zac McCray) What a great season for the sophomore wrestler and the coaching staff. We are so fortunate to have Coach Fielden leading our staff.

Hayden loses in semi's - wrestles for 3rd!

Hayden was defeated in the semifinals by an undefeated wrestler from Hanover Central (43-0) by a final score of 8-1. The consolation match will be between ACAC foes. Hayden will face Sawyer Miller from South Adams. That match will begin at around 5pm. What a great conference! Good Luck Hayden, we are proud of you.

Hayden takes one more step!

Hayden lee takes another step to a state championship by pinning his first opponent of the day. Hayden is just two matches away from a state championship! Go Hayden!

Hayden Lee Advances!

WheN you're wrestling a girl, it's a no win situation. This is definitely true if the girl is a state qualifier, the first one in Indiana history. So, Hayden Lee had to stay focused even with the whirlwind of media attention. He did! Hayden defeated his opponent 4-0 tonight to advance to Saturdays tournament.

Austin Gibson ended his high school wrestling career getting pinned in the first round. Austin wrestled the number now wrestler who had a great 45-0 record coming into the night. No matter what, we are proud of you Austin.

Great Group of Seniors and Wall of Fame Night

The Basketball wasn't that great. I'm not talking about Garrett. Im talking about the game winners, Dekalb. Garrett had a slow start tonight and were behind 7-2 at the end of the first quarter. We would have loved to play some basketball, but the cross county rivals didn't want to play. After getting an early lead all they wanted to do was hold the ball. It's not much fun to watch. They spread the court and hardly looked at  the basket. I goes thats quite a compliment if they didn't think they could match up to us otherwise.

Still the home team Railroaders fought hard all night but couldn't find a way to get the Barons to come out and play. WE said goodbye to 3 Senior Basketball Players and 2 Senior Cheerleaders. Logan Casselman, Todd Frickey, and Tyler David were all honored before the Varsity game. Tori Cox and Janelle Wilhelm were also honored.  It is always tough to say goodbye to GOOD kids. That was certainly true tonight. I have a lot of respect for these young men and women.

Tonight was another special night at GHS. We honored 5 new inductees to the wall of fame. Andy Bodey was the first inductee. I had the privilege of Coaching Andy. What a great young man and very talented Pole Vaulter. He qualified for the NCAA Regional Track meet in Pole Vault after placing at the State meet his Senior year. He is certainly a deserving athlete.

Next we honored Dan and Courtney Feagler. Courtney who traveled all the way from California to accept her honor was an exceptional basketball player. She is the first Lady Railroader to score over 1000 points and she had a great College Career. Dan or as we like to call him "The Legend!" is the best Basketball Coach this school has ever had. His accomplishments after taking over the reigns from Denny Feagler, is legendary. I am so honored to have been apart of many of those successes and also proud that my daughter had a chance to play for Dan.

We then honored Heath Peters. After honoring his teammate Travis Hampshire last year, it was perfect to honor Heath Tonight. Heath was an exceptional golfer and football player at GHS. He participated at the IHSAA State meet twice and earned the Mental Attitude award. He also was an excellent golfer at IU. As a Hoosier, he is ranked in the top ten in IU golf history in many different categories.

The Last honoree was Gary Shippy. Gary was n excellent athlete at GHS with his strength in Baseball. He went on to play at Texas Wesleyan and participated in 2 national championships as a 4 year letter winter at TW. What a great man and a man in love with Garrett.

I am so honored to have been apart of tonights festivities. It is great to see a small town come out to support it's current team and to honor the past successes. Just another example of why Garrett is a great place to be!

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (2-13-12)

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (2-13-12)
"Providing education-based athletics in Indiana."

Most student-athletes have limitations, whether it is in the classroom or on the field/court of play.  That is why we have to study hard, practice hard and apply ourselves at all times.

Most teachers and coaches will tell you that they can live with those limitations as long as you are putting forth your best effort and keeping a good attitude.

Be one of those student-athletes who's always thinking about what you can do to make your classroom work and athletic ability improve semester by semester.  Work constantly on eliminating your limitations!

Great finish to Garrett Sectional!

IHSAA Sectional #22 at Garrett was a classic sectional tournament. I am sure it was one of the best, if not the best, in the state. On Tuesday, we had an overtime game and a buzzer beater. Friday we had another game down to the wire and the championship game tonight was no different.

Concordia was down 20 -28 with a little less than 2 minutes to go in the game. I figured if they had only scored 20 points in 30 minutes of game time, there was no way they would score 8 points in 2 minutes. I was wrong. The Lady Cadets stormed back to tie the game 32-32 at the end of regulation. The 4 minute overtime was all Concordia. Leo couldn't put the ball in the bucket and Concordia won 43-35. Leo only scored 3 points in overtime.

The Lady Cadets will travel to Bellmont next Saturday to take on Hamilton Heights in the Noon game of the Regional tournament.

I just want to say a BIG thank you to all the great Garrett workers. It is so hard to work a game when your own team isn't playing. But the Railroader faithful, did a wonderful job hosting the tournament. I can't begin to tell you how many compliments I got for the tournament. That doesn't have anything to do with me. It has EVERYTHING to do with Great Help! Thanks Garrett! We get to do it all again for the boys in a couple weeks!

Semi-state Champion!

Hayden Lee becomes only the 4th Garrett wrestler to take a Semi-state wrestling title! Congrats to Hayden and the wonderful GHS coaching staff!

Hayden Lee advances to semi state championship!

Hayden is on his way it state. He is also on his way to a Semistate Championship. He has advanced to the championship round at the Coliseum!

Austin lost his chance to wrestle for the championship. Instead he will wrestle for third place in the consolation round!

Gibby makes it TWO!

Austin Gibson dominated his ticket round match, winning 14-4. He will join Hayden in Indy next Friday! Now we can just work on high seeding! Great job Gibby!

Moreau falls 4-2

Brayden Moreau end a great wrestling career falling in a very close match 4-2. He's had a tough season fighting injuries. We are all proud of his determination this year. Thanks Brayden for all your hard work!

Another Barn Burner!

The first game at the IHSAA Girls Sectional at Garrett was another thriller. The Battle this time was between Leo and Angola. (Way too much purple in the gym for my taste!) Angola took a commanding lead in the first quarter. At one time they were up 16-4 over Leo. But Leo fought back and outplayed Angola in the second Half. The final score was 45-42 Leo.

The second game had cinderella Woodlan taking on Concordia. The Lady Cadets really dominated this one. No buzzer beater tonight. Concordia won 52-34. That sets up a classic championship battle between Concordia and Leo tomorrow night at the Paul Bateman Gymnasium eight here in Garrett!

Garrett High School Lip Sync Contest 2012

Ok, I know this doesn't have anything to do with Athletics. BUT, you have to see the first annual Lip Sync Contest. We have such a Talented staff here at GHS!

Play Hard=Good Things!

As I have mentioned on several occasions, our Boys Basketball team has been playing hard. Even through tough times, they have never given up. If you keep playing hard, good things will happen. Tonight was that night. The Railroaders got a great win against a quality opponent tonight defeating Heritage 62-48.

Garrett led at every quarter tonight and really out hustled Heritage on both ends of the court. Zack Sarrazine was the leading scorer with 16 points. WOW! But, Zack also led the team in hustle during the second half. He scored all 16 points in the 4th quarter. The Railroaders shot 50% form the field while holding Heritage to only 34%. We also shot a fantastic 93% from the Free throw line. Joe Martin also had a wonderful game scoring a double double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. We really needed that.

That was a great team win. Everybody played hard. Congrats to the Coaches and Players. Now lets get ready for cross county rival Dekalb. They're coming to our house next week!

What at team! What a great program!

It was a privilege watching the Lady Railroaders during this season.  With the loss of long time Coach Dan Feagler and assistant Craig Kelham, most people would look at this as a rebuilding year. But, Coach Lapadot and our wonderful 3 seniors had different thoughts. We had another great season. Even with moving up to class 3A, we proved tonight that we can play with anyone. The Garrett Sectional has 3 state ranked teams, but we didn't let that intimidate us. We eventually fell in Overtime to Leo by the score of 54-52.
This game was everything it was built up to be. It was a battle. The Garrett "Fifth Man" was a big part of our effort tonight. I would match our fans and student section against anyone, anywhere, anytime. With their support and or senior leadership this was a classic matchup. We shot 42% from the field and 71% from the 3point line. Leo shot 40% across the board.  Laura Moynahan did a great job holding Keeana Gary of Leo to only 12 points. That was Laura's only job and she played it perfectly. Jordyn Knott also had a magnificent night with the double double (12 points and 11 rebounds). She also kept Gary in check. Katie DePew had 14 points and 6 assists. Her leadership during this game and the entire season will be missed next year. I am not sure I have seen anyone as competitive or anyone who lays it all on the line every single game, like she does.

Then you have Brandi Dawson. She was possessed. Her effort was phenomenal. She had 21 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots. She's only a sophomore!

Congrats to the entire team on a great season and the continuation of a Proud Railroader Program. Thank you to the Coaching staff for all their hours and the athletes for their dedication. We are Proud no matter what! Now I can't wait 'til next year.

Big Changes at GHS!

Well, it's official. In August, I will be heading back to the classroom to pursue my first love...... Teaching! Rumors in a small town are amazing and have a life all there own. So, I think it's important to share with you why the change.

Most people don't realize the amount of time required of a High School Athletic Director. Garrett High School offers our students great opportunities in extracurricular activities and athletics. During a single year, our High School athletes participate in over 400 contests. All of these contests require scheduling officials and workers. They require coordination of transportation and communication with each school. Over half of these events are home. It leaves very little time to spend with family. I have 3 daughters. One lives in North Carolina (I haven't been to visit my Daughter since May 2011). One lives in St. Louis (with two of my grandchildren) and one lives in Berne, IN (with 3 of my grandchildren). I have a grandson that is a pretty good wrestler and football player. I have a grand daughter who is a pretty good runner and will be entering High School next year. I need to be a Grandpa and support my grand kids. I couldn't do that without neglecting my duties as Athletic Director at GHS.

In December, I privately told Principal Matt Smith, I would be interested in moving back into the classroom if we got an opening in Math. Well, a couple weeks ago, due to new requirements at the state, we need another Math Teacher. God is amazing. Discussions began immediately about me taking that position. Through the divine providence of God, I will be able to go back to the Classroom and we are getting a Great Football Coach and Athletic Director, Chris DePew. I am so excited about the changes. Chris and I have worked very closely over the past 4 years. He will do a great job as AD and I will get to be a Grandpa. I'm sure he will work well with the Best High School Athletic Secretary in the World, Becky Blotkamp. I was worried about that. Chris will get to be with his family and I will get to be with mine. It's a win-win situation for everyone.

I love teaching. I love being with kids. The one thing I missed being Athletic Director was the direct, day-to-day contact, with students. Almost 2 years ago, as a part of my teaching license renewal, I took a course called Web 2.0. This class was all about how the Internet and technology is being used in the classroom. It really got me excited for our school and education across the country. GHS has been very active in transforming our school to a 21st century school. Now I get to be a part of all that excitement. Never before have so many resources been available for teachers and students. I can't wait to share that excitement with the students at GHS!

I have thoroughly enjoyed being Athletic Director at GHS. Our Coaches and their dedication to teaching our kids, is second to none. I might put in a lot of time throughout the season, but I don't think people know how much time these coaches also put in. They are teachers just as much as our English, math, and other academic teachers. They teach in a laboratory where they are modeling character, goal setting, and life. I will miss being there for them and supporting them through the ups and downs.

I love this community and I can't think of anywhere else I would want to teach. God has provided this great opportunity. He has unveiled this great plan. When I'm not being a Grandpa, I will be supporting our GHS student-athletes. I'm not going anywhere. I plan on being greatly involved in preparing your kids for life. Now it will be in the classroom instead of on the athletic field or court. I grew up just down the road in the Carroll School District. But, the blood that runs through my veins is PURE MAROON AND BLUE! Go Railroaders!

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (2-6-12)

"Promoting education-based athletics in Indiana."

If there is one good lesson to learn from yesterday's Super Bowl, it's that at the end of every sport season, there is only one team left standing.

It is no different in high school, where there is only one state champion in each class.  Every other team ends their season with a losing game.  Just think, only one team ends up winning their last game.

But many life lessons can be learned and experienced along the way.  There are upsets of great teams, individuals have great games, communities unite, and friendships can be developed with your competitors.

Even if your last game ends up being a loss, like the majority of those you compete against, the true champions are those who take something positive away from the experience.

This Week at GHS!

The IHSAA Girls Basketball Sectional Tournament Headlines this week at GHS. But, that's not the only event on the schedule.

The Sectional Games begin on Tuesday Night in the Paul Bateman Gymnasium. The first game sets the stage for all the other games as the Lady Railroaders take on ACAC Rivals Leo. That game will begin at 6pm on Tuesday. It will be followed by the Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger vs Woodlan game. That game will start at approximately 7:30pm.

We expect a large crowd at the games. You can use one of 3 entrances to get into the gym. All the gates will open at 5pm. I expect the Garrett Middle School entrance to be the best entrance to use. Remember, you can NOT use your Big Train Tickets. Single Game cost is $6.00. To purchase tickets for the entire tournament, the cost is just $10. Seating in the gym will also be different than normal. So, you may not be able to sit in your regular seats. We will divide the gym equally for all 4 teams.

This is one of the Best Sectionals in the Area and our Lady Railroaders have a great chance to earn their first ever 3A Sectional Title. Good Luck Ladies!

Between the Sectional games, we will host another Regular Season Boys game on Thursday Night. Garrett will host the Patriots of Heritage High School on Thursday. The JV game will begin at 6pm. REmember, there is no Freshman game. The Varsity game will start at approximately 7:30pm.

On Friday Night the winner of the Garrett vs Leo game will take on Sectional Favorite Angola. That game will tip off at 6:00pm. The winner of the Dwenger vs Woodlan game will play in the second game against Concordia.

The Championship game will be held on Saturday Night at 7:30pm.

Also, on Saturday, 4 Garrett Wrestlers will travel to FOrt Wayne and the Memorial Coliseum to compete in the Semi-State Wrestling Tournament. Good Luck to Hayden Lee, Brayden Moreau, Austin Gibson, and Travis Carunchia.

Loss at Busco

The Railroaders had another slow start offensively at Churubusco tonight and we just couldn't get it going. The final score was 21-4 at the end of the first quarter. We played them even in the second quarter and were down 31-14 at the half. We are down 41-22 at the end of 3. We wind the final quarter 12-9, but it wasn't enough. The final score was Busco 50-34. Nobody can fault the effort. OUr kids always play hard, no matter what.

The Boys will try to get on track offensively this Thursday night vs Heritage. The game will be in the Bateman Gym. There is NO FRESHMAN game on Thursday.

On to Semi-State for Wrestlers!

4 wrestlers will make the trip to the Memorial Coliseum next Saturday to compete in the Semi-State Wrestling Tournament.

Hayden Lee won the 106lb. championship at the Regional Tournament today at Carroll High School. Hayden's record is now 35-2. His victory in the championship was decisive with a Tech Fall win 18-2.

Austin Gibson lost a very close championship match, 3-2 in overtime, and placed 2nd in the 195lb weight class. He will also move on to Semi-State.

Brayden Moreau will also wrestle at Semi-state. Brayden wrestled to 3rd place with a 6-2 decision.

Travis Carunchis was our 4th qualifier finishing 3rd in the 220lb. weight class. He won his final match 4-2.

Great work Coaches and Wrestlers. It is always a great tournament at the Coliseum. Good Luck next week!

Railroader Split with the Knights!

The Lady Railroaders absolutely dominated a good East Noble team tonight on Senior Night! The final score was 48-24. The Lady Railroaders forced 17 turnovers, out rebounded East Noble 25 to 14, and out shot the Lady Knights 58% to 25%.  Senior Katie DePew was on a mission tonight. She led the team with 17 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds, and 6 steals.  Laura Moynahan was 5 of 7 from the field and had 11 points. Brandi Dawson also had 11 points. The 3rd senior Jordyn Knott added 7 points, 5 rebounds, and a blocked shot.

We are SOOOOO very proud of these girls and their accomplishments. We will dearly miss them.

The Boys team battled East Noble throughout the game, but couldn't get enough shots to fall when it counted. We ended up losing 45-39. We would make a charge, take the lead, and then fall back again. But, we never gave up and battled the compete game tonight, fighting for every  possession.  Drake Landes fought for 16 hard earned points and Todd Frickey added 10 for the Railroaders.  We had 14 turnovers to just 5 for East Noble.

Next up on the Schedule is the IHSA Girls Sectional tournament. The Railroaders open the tournament with a BIG game against Leo. Tuesday Nights second game is Bishop Dwenger taking on the Lady Warriors of Woodlan High School.

The Boys will see action again next Thursday Night vs Heritage. This is the last ACAC Conference game of the year. The game will also be played at Home . Good Luck G-Men!
