WEEKLY SCHEDULE

As the Spring season progresses we always get some confusion about times and locations of events. So, I thought it would be best to share this weeks events for you just to make sure we are clear about where and when our teams play this week.

Monday
The girls Varsity Softball team travels to Churubusco. THIS IS A 4:30pm start. This is a strange start time. However, I have checked with the Busco website and they also say its a 4:30 start. So, I will have to assume that is correct. I will check with the BUSCO AD tomorrow, just to make sure, If you don't hear differently assume it's at 4:30pm.

The boys Varsity Baseball team travels to Central Noble for a 5:00pm start time.

Tuesday
The Boys and Girls Track teams travel to WOODLAN for an ACAC 3-way track meet. Please make sure you spread the word about the location. The Coaches were a little confused about the location and Highschoolsports.net IS a little confusing. BUT, the meet really is at WOODLAN not Southern Wells. The meet wil begin at 5:00pm.  DON'T go all the way to Southern Wells. It will be a long trip for nothing!

The Varsity Baseball and Softball team will host South Adams here at Garrett on Tuesday. Both the Baseball and Softball games will begin at 6:00pm.

The Varsity Boys Golf team will travel to Woodlan. The match will begin at 4:30pm. Woodlan plays their golf matches at Pond-a-River Golf Course.

Wednesday
The Varsity Boys Baseball team will play Bluffton AT PARKVIEW FIELD. Our game begins at 4:30pm. THIS IS AN EARLY START TIME! Please make a special note of the early start time as we need to make sure we can get both the games in at a reasonable time. Parkview field is in charge of any postponement. We will let you know if the weather is not good enough for us to play on their field.

Thursday
The Varsity Girls Softball team will travel to Bluffton for another ACAC matchup. The game at Bluffton will begin at 5:00pm.

The Boys and Girls Track teams will host Central Noble at Memorial Field on Thursday night. This will be senior night for the track team. The Senior Recognition will begin at 4:45pm. Field Events and the 3200 relay will begin at 5pm. All other running events will begin at 5:30pm.

Friday
The Varsity Softball team will travel to Concordia for a Softball game against the Lady Cadets. That game is scheduled to begin at 5pm.

Saturday
The Varsity Softball team will host the Garrett Softball Invitational beginning at 10:00am. Garrett will play Bishop Dwenger at 10:00am. The second game, 12noon,  will feature Manchester High School against Elkhart Memorial. The losers of the first two games will play at approximately 2:00pm. The Championship game will begin at 4pm.

JUST A REMINDER. WE ARE NOT PLAYING THE SCHEDULED JV BASEBALL OR JV SOFTBALL GAMES FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR. PLEASE MARK YOUR SCHEDULES ACCORDINGLY!

Busy Friday!

This was a busy Friday as we finishe the first half of the spring season. May is just around the corner and hopefully better weather! Baseball, Softball, and boys/girls track all had contests tonight. Softball 6-1, Yes it was a good win. New Haven is a new team on the schedule who we haven't played in around 20 years. There was no scoring until the 3rd by Garrett when Kayla Morrow lead off with a single. She was followed by Kate DePew 2nd hit also a single. They were advanced on a sac bunt by Ashley Morris. Morris scored when a error happened on Smiths grounder and then Rachel Stafford followed with a single driving in 2 more runs. We added 3 more in the 4th inning when Sam Yoder got her 2nd hit of the game. She was followed by Macy Sturges single and with 2 outs DePew had a triple and she later scored on an error. Kayla Morrow had 2hits tonight as did Stafford and Yoder. DePew had 3hits. On the mound Brit Yarian went the distance giving up 1 run on 5 hits walking none and striking out 7. New Haven scored in the 6th inning when they had 3 hits but didn't threaten other than that. A good way to end the week reaching .500  and with prom weekend here. We have a VERY busy next week with 6 games scheduled every day except Wed. Nice job girls!! Be ready to really play some ball next week. Enjoy your weekend!!!! The Baseball team traveled to Indiana Tech tonight to take on Bishop Luers. They lost 9-1. I received no other stats from the game. The boys tack team ran at Enral Noble tonight and had a good meet coming in 4h with 74.5 points. Todd Frickey had a great night scoring 29 points himself. He had 1st place finishes in the 100 and 200. He tied the meet record in the 200 with a time of 22.6. He also got 2nd in the 400 and was on the 5th place 4x400 team. The girl rack team had their best meet ever at New Haven tonight. One again Jordyn won the high point award. The team was 5th overall. It was Jordyns 2nd MVP award at New Haven. She was 2nd in high jump, long jump, and the 300 hurdles. She was 4th in the 200. She had 28 points. Laura Moynahan was 2nd on shot put with a career best 36-5 3/4. She was also 4th in discus. The team had 8 PRs. Great work girls!

The Softball and Baseball team traveled to Adams Central for another ACAC matchup. Here are the Softball Results and comments from Coach Bishop:

Softball

Garrett v.s. Adams Central. A long bus ride proved to be worth it as we won 6-4 in 8 innings, actually it should have been 7-4 but the head coach made a really dumb mistake. Rachel Stafford had just hit a 3 run homer in the 8th to give us the lead at 7-4. The umpire said that the coach assisted a runner from 3rd to home by touching her. The umpire was correct in his call costing us 1 big run. I asked the team to pick up the coach in the bottom of the 8th and they did to preserve the win at 6-4. We brought the bats today to the tune of 10 hits including a double and homer by Stafford. Amber Poling and Hannah McCoy had a double and single.. Annessa Smith had an rbi single and Katie DePew had 3 singles. Macy Sturges went all 8 innings and pitched well giving up 4 runs , 3 earned on 4 hits. She started rough giving up 3 in the first and settled in allowing 1 run in the 6th which was unearned due to 2 errors. Macy walked 1 and hit 1 and struck out 6. They played a hard game and ground it out to get the win.
We now need to play hard tomorrow v.s. New Haven to put us back on top with back-ti-back wins which would be very good for the club. C Ya there!

Baseball

The Baseball team also made the trip to Adams Central and didn't fare as well as the Softball team. They fell by the score of 10-3. Coach Mireles was not happy with the results. He didn't have much to say.

For everyone else it was not a good night for our Athletic Teams. Where do I start? We were defeated at Baseball, Softball, and Track. Nobody got a "W" tonight except the golfers.

Boys Track
Garrett 58 - Heritage 65 -- Here are the comments from Coach Clifford:

"Proud of the boys tonight. We have continued to face adversity with the injuries and tonight we     started to show more toughness through the adversity! We put ourselves in a position to win at the end of the meet. It came down to the 4x400 relay..... unfortunately we did not win that race even though we shaved 5 second off our best time of the season."

1st Place winners - Jaron Somers - 800, 1600, and 3200; Todd Frickey - 100, 200, 400; Frake Landes - long jump; Robert Deventer - discus; Jordan Lantz, Connor Fostor, Kendall Slabaugh, Jaron Somers 4x800.

2nd Place finishers - Kendall Slabaugh - 800; Jordan Lantz - 3200; Connor Meehan - shotput.

Girls Track
Coach Lapadots comments: "We were horrible as a team tonight and got beat by 5 points. We were not focused or ready to run. Jordyn Knott won High Jump, Long Jump, and 200m. Ariel McCoy won the 1600 and 3200. The 4x800 team of Becca Oliver, Kelsi Winebrenner, Amanda Stump, and Ariel McCoy ran a 10:59 winning the race. Laura Moynahan won the shot put and discus."

Baseball
The Baseball team lost a very tough game to ACAC conference foe Leo tonight here in Garrett. The final score was 12-2 in 6 innings. Brett Schendel took the loss. It was a combination of giving up to much offense to the Lions and not getting much offense for the Railroaders. Leo hit the ball often and hit it hard. Like the girls track team we just lost focus tonight. We are a good team. We just didn't play like it tonight.

Softball
Just like Baseball the Lady Railroaders lost a tough game to Leo. This one was more of a heartbreaker. The final score was 4-2 and the Lady Lions had 3 unearned runs. We are a young team, but we have to understand we can compete with anyone if we play like we are capable. We just can't make mistakes against good teams like Leo. They will always capitalize and make you pay for it.

Here are Coach Bishop's comments: "After last nights aggressive play we were hoping for more of the same tonight and really didn't get it, both on offense and defense. We came out and after a lead off double from Leo , we missed played an outfield ball. That was followed by 2 more hits which resulted in 3 runs and only 1 earned run. We held them until the 5th inning when we had another error which scored giving them 4 total for the game. On the offense we had only 4 hits, led by Katie DePew with 2.  One of those was an rbi double in the 3rd which drove in Ashley Morris, who had doubled to start the inning. In the 6th, DePew started the inning and was driven in by Annessa Smith with a double of her own. Consistency remains a problem and perhaps better pre game preperation would help. We will address this in practice tomorrow. Honestly after scorching the ball last night the coaches were hoping that the players would be excited to go to the plate tonight and that didn't happen. Brit Yarian pitched a good game allowing 4 runs on 6 hits, walking 1, and striking out 7. A few mental errors on defense really hurt. Next up Adams Central there on Thursday and then New Haven here on Friday night. "

Great win for SB!

The Lady Railroader Softball team got a quality win tonight over a great opponent and hit the ball well against a very good pitcher. The final score was 9-4. Here are Coach Bishop's comments:

"As they say, what a difference a day makes. The girls came to play and compete today. Macy Sturges started and got the win with 3 innings of relief from Yarian, they combined for 10 k's.At the plate we were aggressive against a very good pitcher and put the ball in play, hard all night. Katie Depew had 2 hits, as did Annessa Smith, Hannah McCoy and Ashley Morris. DePew had a triple while Smith  added a double both hits driving in runs. Also having a triple was Rachel Stafford also producing a run. Morris also had a rbi. Casandra Grrifith had 2 nice sacrifice bunts doing her job and moving the runners, while Stafford threw out a runner at home trying to score on a base hit. Samantha Yoder completed the play with a nice tag on the runner. Hopefully we bring it again tomorrow against a good Leo team and an important conference game. We had 8 runs on 10 hits and 3 errors while Lakeland also had 10 hits scoring 4 runs and committing 3 errors. Bring it again!!"

Garrett hosts Leo in a big ACAC matchup in Baseball and Softball tomorrow. Both games begin at 6pm.

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (4-23-12)

"Providing education-based athletics in Indiana."

Are you the student-athlete that follows up on a commitment that you have made to your parents, teachers, coaches, or teammates?

It is somewhat discouraging to those in charge when someone accepts the challenge of doing something and then they don't follow through.  If you commit to doing something, make sure you do your part.

Most teachers and coaches will tell you that they look at the effort, just as much as they look at the result.  If there's a project in the classroom, or new play or fundamental to learn in your sport, follow through and do your part.  Set yourself up for success!

Saturday Results & another close NO-NO in BA!

The Baseball team continued winning today sweeping a doubleheader from East Noble. It wasn't the offense but defense and great pitching that won the games. In game 1 - Andrew Robinson was ONE STRIKE FROM A No-HITTER. That is the second ALMOST No Hitter this week. He gave up a single in the top of the 7th with a full count. Weber gave up a single and we won a close game 2-1. In game #2 Andrew led offensively going 2-2 and a "PLETHORA" of pitchers got the win. Kylan LaMotte started the game. He was relieved by Noah Follett, Brett Schendel and James Weber  who all pitched an inning.  The offense was good enough to get a 4-2 win.

The Lady Railroader Track team had a great day at Churubusco and the Turtle Town Track Invitational and finished a very strong third. We missed 2nd by 5 points and the 2nd place team scored 7 in the pole vault. Jordyn Knott was the MVP for the 3rd year in a row. She won the High Jump, Long Jump, and 300 Hurdles. She was ahead of 2nd place by 8 point! Laura Moynahan got 2 3rd place finishes as did Ariel McCoy. Ariel ran her best 2mile time ever (12:31). Laura threw her best shot (34-6) and our 4x800 relay team was great with a time of 11:04 for 3rd place. Other placers were Brandi Dawson, Bailey Sutton, Rachel Hood, and Lyndsey Gibson. Great Job Coaches and Athletes!

The Boys track team traveled to Goshen for the Goshen Relays. Todd Frickey (100m) and Robert Deventer (Discus) both finished 2nd. Not a great day for the boys track team. The 4x100 team got 5th in their heat, Jaron Somers got 4th in his heat and the team got 15th overall with 32 points.

The Garrett Golf team traveled to Limberlost Golf Course in Geneva on Saturday to play in the South Adams Invitational. Garrett finished 2nd in the team competition behind Shenandoah. Individually Bennett Rieke finished 3rd with a score of 80. Karsten Cooper finished 5th shooting a 83 followed by Cameron Stockdale(87), Zach Sarrazine (90) and Noah Getts (100). Medalist honors were shared by Shenandoah Steirs and Farmer score with scores of 77.

The Softball team lost their second game at the Showdown this afternoon getting defeated by Dekalb 6-5. The Lady Railroaders were up 5-1 early in the game. They lost 12-2 to Lakewood Park in the 3rd game of the tournament. Here are Coach Bishop's comments:

"DeKalb v.s. Garrett Our offense scored 3 times in the 2nd and 2 times in the 3rd inning and shut down after that striking out 14 times. Sturges pitched 5 2/3 giving up 4 hits hitting 2 batters and walking 2 and those hurt her a little, otherwise pitched a nice game. Yarian came in with 2 outs in the 6th in relief of Macy after 3 runs had scored. With the game tied at 5 entering the bottom of 7th  they pushed across a run to beat us 6-5
. It was a game where we just didn't compete at the plate throughout the game and it ended up costing us. Yarian was charged with the loss. Annessa Smith & Emily Sommers had doubles and Amber Poing had a triple driving in 2 runs. The 2nd game v.s. LP was dominated by them as the cruised once again thru this SHOWDOWN winning by the 10 rule every game and have won their last 9 contests easily. Their travel team is very good. Annessa Smith had 2 hits leading us with only 4 hits total. DePew had a triple. We committed 3 errors which didn't help the cause any."

Girls Defeat Eastside in Showdown

The Dekalb County Showdown is one of the premier softball tournaments in Northern Indiana. This year will be no different. Garrett took on Eastside tonight in the first game and came out with a victory defeating the Lady Blazers 9 - 5.  Yarian went the distance for the Lady Railroaders  and Coach Bishop said we played pretty well overall. Emily Somers had 2 of our 7 hits for the game.

The next round is tomorrow when we take on Dekalb at Noon. Then we follow up with Lakewood Park at 2pm.  All of the games are played at Dekalb High School this year. Good Luck Ladies!

Baseball/Softball Split with Warriors

The Baseball and Softball teams opened the ACAC season tonight against the Woodlan Warriors. The Softball team came up against a very experienced, quality team. We struggled to get hits and were shutout 4-0 for the game. We had 20 put-outs but we also had 13 strikeouts for the game.  We are battling and growing up a little every day. We need to continue to improve against some really good competition. Here are Coach Bishops comments:

Garrett v.s. Woodlan we lost 4-0 tonight. we had 2 hits both by Katie DePew. We were dominated by Pitcher Robbins who struck 13.  We played great defense throughout the game making 20 putouts. We showed heart and played hard against simply a better team at this point. To the fans of Woodlan I would like to say that they showed sportmanship and knowledge of the game when one of our players made a great defenesive play. They new it was a great paly and yelled out the number of her and yelled great play
We grew some more tonight and thats a good sign, get ready for some softball starting tomorrow at DeKalb at the showdown. Game time 5pm

The Baseball team was  a different story. Brett Schendel took the mound and had a shaky start in the first inning. He loaded up the bases but then got 3 straight outs to get out of trouble.  He settled down and the offense got going. We ended up winning 9-4. Schendel struggled again in the 6th inning before James Weber came in to close out the 6th and then the 7th inning. Getting the first conference win is always important.

Good work teams and coaches.

Not quite NO-NO and Softball W!

Noah Follet came close. He had a great pitching performance tonight at Eastside throwing a No Hitter into the 7th inning before giving up a hit. James Weber came in to close the game for a 4-1 win. Porter was 2 for 4, 2 singles, and 2 stolen bases. Next up Woodlan as we open the ACAC season, Thursday, at home. Game time is 6pm.

The Softball team traveled to Hamilton tonight for it's final tune-up for the ACAC opener tomorrow. Here are Coach Bishops comments:

"Macy Sturges started on the mound went 3 innings,  gave up 2 unearned runs. She walked 2 and struck out 5. She was relieved by Brit Yarian who went 4 innings, giving up no walks, striking out 6, and allowing no runs. Offensively, we were lead  with 2  hits each from Macy Sturges, Katie DePew and Rachel Stafford. Rachel had a double and her first career home run. She hit a solo shot over the left field fence. Sam Yoder and Annessa Smith also had a hit. Ashley Morris had a triple. We  won 10-2.

Now we're getting ready foa the conference opener tomorrow here at 6pm against Woodlan. We will have to be focused and ready to go to play with a veteran club like them. WE CAN DO IT LADIES!!!!!!!

Added note a pre game injury sidelined Oliva Ruble and was sent to the hospital for x-rays. I also checked with Alexis Metzger who had rotator cuff surgery yesterday and will be down rehabing for several months and possibly ready to go in the fall, get well girls!!

Baseball Wins -- Softball Loses

What a crazy windy night for High School sports. It was good for some and bad for others.

Baseball

Garrett got another win against a sectional foe tonight defeating Bishop Dwenger 14-4. Garrett Moon led the team going 4-4 with 3 doubles and Andrew Robinson was 3-5 with a walk and 2 doubles.  We had 12 hits and 8 of those were doubles. Andrew Robinson also go the win on the mound.

Softball

Coach Bishop wasn't happy with the performance of the team tonight vs Fairfield. Here are the comments:

"We were not there from the start to the finish, mentally and physically. We were handled quite easy tonight by Fairfield losing 9-0. We had a couple of hits and never threatened in the game. Britmarie Yarian started, followed by Macy Sturges and Hannah McCoy with Yarian taking the loss. The effort was simply not there.  So, we work on that in practice tomorrow! Next up we travel to Hamilton on Wednesday at 5:00pm"

Monument City Results- Boys Track

Coach Clifford and the Boys Track team traveled to Angola for the Annual Monument City Relays. This is a good meet to see where your at in the early season and where you might be able to go. Here are the comments from Coach Clifford:

"The Boys track team finished 6th at Monument City Relays today. We had season best times in the 4x800 and 4x400 relays. Todd Frickey won the 100m and was only .02 seconds from breaking the meet record. Robert Deventer was 2nd in the discus. Drake Landes was 3rd in Long Jump. I am extremely proud of the guys continuing to better their times! This work ethic is what we need to have for the rest of the season. We are expecting to get some guys back from injury this week, so we will be at full strength once again. We have a tough meet coming up on Tuesday at Bluffton vs Leo/Bluffton and the Goshen Relays on Saturday. I am excited to start the week and continue to get better!"

Baseball drops one on a Rainy Day

We tried. We first moved the games back to 1pm. When it looked like we couldn't do it here in Garrett, we made the trip to South Whitley. They have a tarp for their field so we thought we could get the games completed. The rain just wouldn't cooperate. We got completed one and didn't get the result we wanted. The final score was 8-5 Whitko.

Coach Mireles said "We just didn't put the ball in play when we needed to. We had 10 hits but left 12 on base. Half of those left on base were in scoring position. You have to take advantages of the opportunities when you get them.  We didn't do that and the results are a loss.

The Railroaders will try it again next week. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. ACAC play begins on Thursday.

Softball defeats Carroll

The Lady Railroaders bounced back tonight after the loss to Columbia City defeating the Lady Chargers of Carroll High School 8-2. Here are the coaches comments:

Garrett v.s. Carroll  Macy Sturges started on the mound and gave up 1 run in the first on 2 straight hits. She ended the inning with 2 strikeouts and a ground ball back to her. She settled in then until the 6th and gave up 2 hits and 1 error by the defense allowing 1 run. She held Carroll scoreless in the 7th.

On the offensive side we scored in the 2nd after Sturges led off with a single, stole 2nd, and came home on Ashley Morris's double. We scored 2 more in the 5th on the Yarian single. She was forced at 2nd and Katied DePew got on. Katie stole 2nd, Sam Yoder got on via an error, followed by Hannah McCoy bunt single. Emily Somers reached by fielders choice. We scored 2 runs and put the game away in the 6th with 5 runs on 6 hits. On the night DePew had a triple, Morris 2 doubles, McCoy 2 singles, Casandra Griffith 2 singles. We had 12 hits. Softball vs. Columbia City

The Lady Railroaders lost to Columbia city tonight 9-2. The Lady Eagles are a pretty good program. We will grow from this type of competition. Here are Coach Bishops comments:

C. City v.s Garrett  We ran into a well seasoned ball club tonight and they produced when given a chance. Britmarie Yarian started and went 1 2/3 innings giving up 5 runs 3 earned including a 2 run homer, relieved by Hannah McCoy who went 4 innings on 5 hits 4runs all earned also gave up a 2 run homer. Kayla Morrow also saw her first action on the mound tonight. We got behing 4-0 after 2innings, got 2 back in the 3rd and gave up 2 more in the bottom of the inning and 2 more in the 4th. McCoy kept them scoreless in innings 5&6. We ended up losing 9-2. At the plate Emily Somers had a hit and rbi and Casandra Griffith had a rbi as well. Hannah McCoy and Sam Yoder also had singles. The kids didn't give up and played hard but were over matched tonight by a better team and that happens sometimes. The defense turned a double play as well.

Tomorrow at Carroll at 5pm. COMPETE EVERY PLAY!!!

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (4-10-12)

"Providing education based athletics in Indiana"

Some days in the classroom, and on the playing field, the student-athlete has a lot of information thrown their way and may have trouble dissecting it all. I'm sure this has happened to you.

If you don't understand a problem in the classroom or a new play being explained by your coach, ask questions. There's absolutely nothing wrong with having your teacher or coach go over something again so you understand the process.

It's better to be sure now, rather than waiting until test day or game day, and not knowing the answer or routine!

Carroll Softball game at 5pm

What a night. Remember about a month ago when the weather was setting record High temperatures every day. Remember March? It was the warmest March on record. Boy, how things have changed! Baseball made the long trip to Nappanee to take on Northwood High School. The final score was 3-0. Coach Mireles said we ran ourselves our of innings, making too many base running mistakes. He was also not happy with our approaches at the plate, too many strikeouts. He said we need to have better mental approaches offensively.

That wraps up a long night in GHS Sports. The weather can only get better and I'm sure our athletes will also get better. The season is just getting started and we are working to win some hardware. Keep up the good work GHS!

Columbia City Softball 6pm

Coach Bishop was wrong about the start time for the Columbia City game. The Varsity Softball team plays at 6pm at Columbia City.

I show the Carroll Softball game at 4:30pm on Thursday. But the Carroll website shows it at 5pm
So I better check on that one for Thursday. I'm going with the 5pm start for Carroll and 6pm at Columbia City.

Gotta Love it! Too many dates and different times!

Baseball / Softball Results -- Good and Bad!

The Lady Railroaders hosted Fremont at Denny Feagler field tonight and squeezed out a 4-3 win in 8 innings. Coach Bishop Comments:

Macy Sturges started pitching and gave up 2 hits and walked 2 in the first inning.Second inning she gave up a lead off double and a error in the outfield allowed a run to cross in the second. SAturges started to settle down and gave them no more and finished 7 innings allowing 3 runs all earned walked 2 and struck out 8. Brit Yarian pitched the 8th and got the win.We scored 2 runs in the second and 1 run in the fifth to tie the game. In the 8th K DePew lead off with a single and stolen base followed by Annessa Smith doing the same thing. Ashley Morris bunted for a single with runners on 2nd and 3rd. Emily Somers came to the plate with no outs and bases loaded. She worked the count to full and induced a walk and DePew walked home and we won 4-3 in 8 innings. We left 14 runners on base and that has to change, we were lucky to win tonight, we stayed close, and as they say a win is a win and sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. Lets move on to tougher challenges that lie ahead starting at C City on Wed there at 4:30.

The Baseball team hosted Angola tonight. Kylan LaMotte was the starting pitcher. He struggled early and we got down 3-1. Then Garrett Moon came to the plate and "Jacked" another shot to Right Field that put the Railroaders ahead 4-3. However, we couldn't hold the lead and eventually lost 5-4. A bright spot was Andrew Robinson who came in to pitch the final 3 innings and did a great job. He had good stuff and threw strikes. We had a couple chances to get some runs back but couldn't get the "Ducks off the pond". SO, we try again tomorrow.

The Baseball team travels to Northwood tomorrow for a 5pm start.

We got on the board in the 3rd inning with 1 run as Sam Yoder singled, then stole a base. Annessa Smith got an RBI double to score Annessa. Belmont tied it up in the 3rd, and scored 1 run in their 6th inning to go ahead 2-1. In the top of 7th, Hannah McCoy doubled followed by Rachel Stafford's RBI double to tie it up. Sam Yoder's RBI single, her 3rd hit of the game, scored Rachel for the final run of the game. Besides her 3 hits, Sam Yoder also had two stolen bases. BritMarie Yarian

Baseball notches 2nd win!

I don't have any stats yet. But, I do know the Baseball team got another win tonight, shutting out the Prairie Heights Panthers by the score of 4-1. Kylan LaMotte got his first win and pitched a 6 inning shut out. The only run of the game for PH came in the 7th off of the Garrett Relief Pitcher. Congrats an another great win for the Railroaders!

I'll give more detail when I get the complete stats from Coach Mireles.

Track Starts Season!

Typically we have rain, snow, and sub 40 degree temperatures for this Garrett/Dkalb Track Meet. It wasn't balmy by any means , but of the first week of April, we'll take it. It was sunny and cool for the opening of the OUTDOOR track season for the Railroaders. Our teams performed well and we had some good surprises.

Senior Ariel McCoy had a great race in the 3200 tonight. She looked very comfortable and won the race easily in a time of 11:50. Amanda Stump and Jordyn Knott also won an event tonight. Amanda won the 1600 and Jordyn won the 200.

We had some other great efforts turned in by Alaina Creager, CC Martinez, Brandi Dawson, and Kelsi Winebrenner. The final score was Dekalb 84 - Garrett 39

For the Boys. The score was a bit closer, DeKalb 71 - Garrett 52. Drake Landes led the way for the Rairoaders with 3 first place ribbons in 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, and Long Jump. Todd Frickey was 1st in the 100m dash, Jaron Somers was 1st in the 800m run, and Chase Hall dominated the 200m dash. Our second place finishers were Jaron in the 1600 and 3200, Patrick Chester in High Jump, Todd Frickey in Long Jump, and Robert Deventer in Discus.

All in all a great meet. We had great workers and the Junior High Track Team members did an AWESOME JOB helping out with hurdles, field events and timing (Miranda Malcolm). The Junior HIgh Coaches also did a great job getting those kids organized and helping out with the meet as well. We have such a great group of workers to get these meets done. We couldn't do it without them! Thanks Everyone!

Baseball and Softball Tonight!

The girls softball team was defeated by a good Angola team tonight at home tonight. The final score was 6-0. Here are the comments from Coach Bishop:

Garrett v.s Angola softball We came out a little flat and made some errors right away and we were behind 3-0 after one inning. The kids still played hard but we didn't hit real well tonight. Macy Sturges went the distance giving up 6 runs' 3 were earned on 8 hits while striking out 4 and walking 3. Katie DePew had a infield hit and Hannah McCoy had a sharp single up the middle. Leading the way was Freshman Emily Somers for the second straight game with 2 hits, good job. Time to regroup and get ready for Belmont on Friday. Bus leaving at 3pm from the parking lot at the softball diamond . Game time 5pm

After nearly an hour delay, waiting for the umpires, the Boys Varsity Baseball team got its first win of the season tonight at the Home Opener vs Concordia Lutheran. Garrett had 10 hits in 6 six innings. Brett Schendel pitched a great game through 5 innings to get the win and the Railroader bats were very active tonight. James Weber and Garrett Moon both had doubles and Andrew Robinson had 2. Brandon Porter and Andrew Johnson both had triples. The final score was 14-4 in just 6 innings. Garrett Moon had a great 3 run Home Run that jumped out of the park. Nearly everyone hit the ball well and we had some great fielding plays as well. Defensively Noah Follet made a couple of great catches in Right Field to help seal the victory. Congrats to Coach Mireles on a fine victory over a quality opponent.

The Railroaders will host Prairie Heights tomorrow at 6pm. Good Luck Team!

Spirng is Here and Softball is underway!

I still don't have the stats but we had a pretty exciting game at Denny Feagler field tonight when the Lady Railroaders lost to the East Noble Softball team. The final score was 7-3, but it was a good game.

The Lady Railroaders took and early 2-0 lead about midway through the game. (I think it was the 3rd Inning). We had plenty of base runners before that inning, but just couldn't score. Fortunately, neither could East Noble. We held the lead 2-1 until the top of the 6th inning. East Noble tied the game and we couldn't do anything in the bottom of the 6th. All the action took place in the top of the 7th inning. East Noble went ahead 3-2. On that play Railroader Catcher Anessa Smith tagged the East Noble runner out, but lost the ball and sustained an injury. Coach Bishop had to shuffle the lineup to accommodate for the loss of Smith. With bases loaded, he pulled one outfielder in and left 2 outfielders. It was a risk, but Coach wanted to get out of the inning giving up only one run. The risk didn't work out for the Lady Railroaders. The next batter drove the ball over our outfielders head and they went ahead 6-2. The Lady Knights added an insurance run to end the top of the 7th 7-2.

The Lady Railroaders battled to load the bases and scored a run to make it 7-3. We just couldn't convert anymore runners and that was the final score.

Brit-Marie Yarian pitched a good game and the loss will go on her record However, she did a great job as a freshman starting in her first Varsity Contest. She just needed a little help to get out of the 7th and it didn't happen.

The Lady Railroaders will play again tomorrow at home vs. Angola. The start time is 5pm. Also, the Boys Bseball team will open the 2012 season with a game vs. Concordia. That game will also begin at 5pm

Good Luck Railroaders!

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (4-2-12)

"Providing education-based athletics in Indiana."

During the past few months I attended the state championship games in football and boys and girls basketball. What an exciting time.

Have you had the experience of competing for a conference championship or state championship? If so, how did it feel? Win or lose, I'm sure you enjoyed the experience and learned from the games along the way.

The nice thing about high school sports is that you don't have to be a state power to enjoy the journey. Take time to cherish the moment and cultivate those lasting friendships that you are forming with you teachers, coaches, teammates, and people in your community!
