"Promoting education-based athletics in Indiana"
How difficult is it for a team to stay highly ranked in their conference, district, or state? We all know it is very difficult. The higher you are ranked, the more determined your opponent will be on game night.
Upsets occur all the time and on any given night. The victory goes to the team that is most prepared for their opponent and executes the best game plan.
Getting to the top in any sport is a long and tough journey. Staying there can be even tougher. Never look past your next opponent regardless of your ranking!

Fall Season continues
Garrett took another step toward a Sectional Championship by soundly defeating a good Whitko team 42-14 in Garrett tonight. Our team is doing a great job playing together and being unselfish. We have some of the toughest kids in the area and they love playing regardless of the circumstances. We have a wonderful coaching staff that puts their heart into every game. We have a fantastic group of Fans and parents that give great support for the team and their players. We will give Jimtown everything they can handle and more!
We will travel to Jimtown next Friday Night for a 7:30pm kick-off. We are one step away from a Sectional Championship. GO RAILROADERS!

Winter + Fall = CRAZY!!!!!!!!
On the calendar it is still FALL..................... Unless you are talking about the Athletic Calendar. The Fall season isn't over yet. The Football team is competing (and we are readying the football field for another game), but the Winter Sports Teams have started practices. Monday marked the official beginning of the Winter Sports Season in Indiana. On Monday the Girls Basketball teams across the state started practices. Next Monday is the official beginning of the Wrestling Season and the week after that is the beginning of the Boys Basketball season.
The transition to winter sports, for me, begins about the first part of October. So, it's a little crazy trying to wind-down one season while another is gearing-up. I just wanted to mention a couple of things:
The Sectional Semi-Final Football game between Garrett and Whitko will be played here in Garrett at Memorial Field this Friday Night. The game will start at 7:30pm. YOU CAN NOT USE YOUR BIG TRAIN TICKET to get into this game. EVERYONE MUST PURCHASE A TICKET AT THE GATE. The cost is $6. There are NO PRESALE tickets.
WE HAVE LETTER JACKETS. The High School Athletic Office has letter jackets for sale for a REALLY good price. Last year we bought-out our supplier and can offer letter jackets to you for a great low price. So if you have a NEW LETTER WINNER, contact the high school athletic office to see if we have your size.
Fall teams will schedule their own awards programs and letters, chevrons, captain stars, and numerals will be given out at those awards nights. Contact your coach if you are unsure about the date and time. Also, contact your coach if you have questions about the awards.
We will have winter schedules printed in a couple of weeks. We are still working with our opponents to verify times and games, especially for lower levels (freshman/jv) Once we are convinced we can print an accurate schedule calendar, we will make it available in the offices. BUT, if you want to look ahead at the schedule, you can do so by going to highschoolsports.net . You can look for Garrett Schools and the entire winter season sports schedule will be available. When we enter the practice schedules and transportation times, you will also have that information.
The National Weather Service is talking about a Winter similar to last year. SO, that will mean cancellations. The Athletic Department will post Game cancellations and postponements via this Blog, Highschoolsports.net, and local media. Practice cancellations will be done via the Coaches by phone or text. The safety of our students is the main priority. IF, IN YOUR OPINION, YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER CAN NOT ARRIVE TO A GAME OR PRACTICE SAFELY, DON"T LET THEM TRY! Their will be absolutely NO consequences. Please do your best to notify the coach so they will know NOT to expect them. A decision about wether to cancel games or practices will be made keeping in mind the safety of the students. As a rule of thumb, If school is cancelled, we will cancel practices. If in the view of the administration, road conditions will improve enough to allow practices, we may still allow teams to practice. A good example of this is Fog Delays. If the Fog would lift, we would allow practices. If road conditions worsen or remain hazardous we will cancel all activities. We will always err on the side of caution.
Well, that's enough information for one post. I am sure we will share more information as the winter sports seasons get into full swing! Good Luck Railroader Football team, defeat the Wildcats!

Are you a victim of bullying or do you know anyone that is a victim? Hopefully you aren't the culprit.
Bullying should never be tolerated and should be reported to the proper authorities immediately. Whether it occurs in the classroom, athletic arena, or away from school, it is your duty as a student-athlete to report this to a teacher, coach, or administrator at your school.
Whether it involves you or someone you know, please don't hesitate to "do the right thing". There is no place for bullying so take the initiative and refuse to be a part of it.

Are you finding certain classes (subjects) challenging or hard to comprehend this school year? If you have trouble understanding a workout routine or new play that your coach designs, would you ask that coach for help?
It should be no different in the classroom. Don't be afraid to go to your teacher and ask for their help when you don't understand something. You will find that almost all teachers (like coaches) enjoy working with those who ask for help and are looking for ways to improve.
Don't be embarrassed. It's the best way to stay on track!

Saturday -- CC Reg. / VB / BSO Regional Drama!
Today the Cross Country Season for GHS came to a close. Ariel McCoy and Jaron Somers ran at a very tough Cross Country Regional Race today. Ariel finished 38th and Jaron finished 29th. Only the top fifteen and the top five teams move on the Semi-state. Carroll's Boys and Girls teams advanced by winning the meet.
I can't say enough good things about Ariel McCoy and Jaron Somers. I challenge any other sport to claim they train harder than CC Runners. They must run 6-7 days a week all year long, compete in track, summer road races, and CC season meets at least twice a week. No one trains harder or longer than they do. So, when you are a Senior it is likely you have trained for somewhere between 5,000 and 8,000 miles in your career. Both Jaron and Ariel have been committed runners for all four years in high school and achieved regional status throughout their career. Congrats to both of you on a very successful career and good luck at the collegiate level
The Volleyball team finished the 2011 regular season with another couple of wins out of state. The team traveled to Napolean, Michigan to take on Coach Richardson's old High School. The team finished 5-0 and now they can concentrate on Sectional foe Bishop Dwenger.
Finally, the Boys Soccer Regional concluded tonight here in Garrett. Two private schools faced each other for the second time this season. Bishop Luers and Canterbury played each other the first game of the year to a 0-0 tie. So we were braced for a very intense game. It was intense but the score wasn't even close. The final score was 5-0 in favor of the number one team in the State Canterbury. BUT, the game was exciting because of all the action and rough play on the field. That play carried over to the fans in the stands. I'm not sure either team knows Character Counts Week is coming up this week. I know people are passionate about their kids. But, I wish they could view these games as their intended. They are High School Sports events trying to promote education through athletics. It's not professional sports or even collegiate sports. Maybe I'm naive to believe that's possible.
It was fun hosting and I hope we are chosen again next year. Good Luck Canterbury at Semi-State.

7-2 with more to play!
Heritage ends the season with 4 losses all of them to quality opponents. They are a good team and will face Jimtown in the same sectional as the Railroaders.
The Railroaders end the regular season at 7-2 and will travel to Tippy Valley to take on the Vikings. They lost tonight to Whitko who is also in the same sectional as GHS! The tournament is going to be exciting!

Why we host Soccer Regionals!
Garrett hosted the 2011 Boys Soccer Regional Tournament tonight at the "Pitch". Fort Wayne Canterbury dominated Lakeland and won easily 8-0. Cross County Rival Lakewood Park lost in the second game of the night 2-0.
The weather was terrible, but we had a great crowd for both games. I have been asked why we host so many tournaments and so I thought I would answer that for everyone. Garrett has some of the best facilities in Northeast Indiana. That includes our Gymnasium, Track, Football Field, Soccer Fields, Baseball Field, and Softball field. We have a great history of managing tournaments. That is a testament to the great workers we have and the hospitality of our community. Even though all of those things are important considerations for being chosen by the IHSAA. Why do we offer to host?
There are several answers to that.
First, is I love to do them. I love it when people come to our community and school and here all the comments. They are always so complimentary about our hospitality and our great first class facilities. I never have difficulty finding great workers who represent this community with a lot of class.
Second, it is great for our community. I saw every kid on the Canterbury team with a pizza from Garrett's Pizza Hut after their game. I also saw plenty of subway sandwiches and drinks. I am sure they filled up their gas tanks at our gas stations. They spend money in our community.
Third, it is good for our kids. Although GHS did not have a team in the tournament, we always want to offer to host. When we do have a team in the tournament, our people can stay at home. We might host a tournament for years and never have a team in it. Then one day we do and it will be a great advantage for our kids. When we have hosted sectional softball, baseball, or basketball, it has helped our kids. When we have hosted the ACAC track meet or ACAC Wrestling meet, it has helped our kids. Tonight, we had our Soccer Boys working the sidelines. It is good for them to see a regional game. It builds their desire to accomplish that goal and gives them incentive to get better.
The Regional Championship game will be held on Saturday Night at 7pm. Two really good teams, including the Number 1 state ranked Canterbury team will put on a great soccer game. Come out and enjoy the game!

IHSAA Tip of the Week - October 10, 2011
Do you feel uncomfortable doing an interview for television, radio, or a school newspaper? Here are a few suggestions.
Take time to digest the question. Think before you speak. Consider what you are about to say. Is this something you won't be able to take back?
Go to your family, coaches, and teachers and ask them to help you if you have never done an interview before or feel that you need additional help with the process.
Prepare for the questions that you most likely will be asked. You will be confident in your responses and be a good representative of your school, sport, and team.
Garrett VB -- another win!
The Volleyball team defeated Whitko tonight in 3 straight games. With one more game in the regular season, the team is hitting their stride. They travel to Michigan on Saturday to take on Coach Richardson's Alma Mater and a great tune up for sectional. Since we drew the bye, this game is important so we do not have to go without a game for over a week. If you plan on attending, Coach Richardson can give you directions!

Seniors make Statement at CC Sectional!
Harley and I made the beautiful trip up Highway 33 to West Noble High School for the IHSAA Cross Country Sectional. I love Cross Country and the Sectional at West Noble is a tradition like no other. For Seniors, it's do or die. Potentially the last race of their career. This challenging 5k course has ended the Cross Country Careers of many a great runner. Tonight, 2 Railroader Harriers took the challenge and came out on top again!
Ariel McCoy and Jaron Somers ran fantastic races to place 13th and 9th to qualify for Saturday's Cross Country Regional back at West Noble. Jaron knew what he was doing. When the rounded the pond he was in 34th place but looked great. By the time the race was half over he was in the top 15 to stay. He just moved up from there and finished 9th. Ariel McCoy ran her race with a little more drama. After about half the race she had dropped back to 17th place and a LARGE gap had grown between her and 15th place. !5th place is the cutoff for a regional qualifier. If you finish 16th your season is over. 15th or Higher and your season continues. I have to admit, I had given up. When Ariel ran behind the Football field, I thought she was done. When she came around the middle school Stephanie and I counted the runners and were shocked to find she was in 13th place. We had to count several times because Ariel had made up a HUGE deficit to put herself solidly in the top 15.
Both Jaron and Ariel have had wonderful running careers at GHS and they have been leaders all 4 years. We are so proud of them and the rest of the senior runners, Caitlyn Przemielewski, (Manager ) Kahla Snyder, Kendall Slabaugh, and Jordan Lantz, We will be honoring all of them at halftime of the Football game on Friday. Thanks runners for the great season and Good Luck to Ariel and Jaron Saturday!

Volleyball Sectional Draw & Senior Night.
The IHSAA Tournament draw took place tonight. Garrett will play in the 3A sectional #22. The games are scheduled for Thursday, October 20th and Saturday, October 22nd. Garrett drew the bye game and will play the host Bishop Dwenger Saints on Saturday in the second game. The opening rounds are on Thursday Night. The first game on Thursday will feature the Woodlan Lady Warriors and the Concordia Cadets. In game 2, ACAC Co-Champion Leo will face Angola. The winners of these two games will face each other on Saturday. That game will start at 11am. The Garrett game will follow that contest.
The Volleyball team concluded their home season tonight hosting the West Noble Chargers. The night was devoted to our 4 seniors, Katie DePew, Myranda Gibson, Jordyn Knott, and Laura Moynahan. These girls have done had wonderful careers at GHS in many sports. But, they have really been leaders in our Volleyball program. We are proud of them and all their accomplishments. They are great athletes, great in the classroom, and great role models for our kids.
Both the JV and the Varsity teams shut our West Noble going 5-0 for the night. Besides Senior Night our game was devoted to raising money for Breast Cancer Awareness. Our girls wore pink spandex and there was a lot of PINK in the stands. Prizes were given away, a silent auction was held, and all of tonight's profits will go to Breast Cancer Research. Coach Richardson did a great job planning this night for a very worthwhile cause. We also want to thank all the area businesses who donated prizes and financial support for this cause!

FB Sectional Draw
The Garrett Railroaders will travel to Tippeconoe Valley High School for the first round of the IHSAA Sectional Tournament. Then the Railroaders will play the winner of Whitko vs Concordia. The Railroaders will play home in that game. The other side of the 3A bracket will see the Lakeland Lakers play West Noble and Heritage will face Jimtown.
The first round games will be Friday, October 21st. We will set the game times in our meeting tomorrow. I will release that information here on the Blog once it has been determined.
I love sectional time and I can't wait to see this team progress through the tournament. We are a good team and I think we can make a lot of noise in the tournament.
Good Luck Coach Frickey and the team!

GSO Lady Railroader Season Ends! But Soccer Not Done!
Tonight the Lady Railroaders met a senior laden, very talented, Westview Soccer team and were defeated 7-0. Westview dominated the sectional scoring 19 goals in just two games. Our girls battled with a great defensive strategy and didn't give up the first goal until 12 minutes into the game. That may not sound like much, but it is a big deal.
Terry Yarde and the senior girls did a great job focusing on the sectional after struggling during the regular season. This team had injury after injury and had a tough time getting the win. But, that did not stop them from avenging two key losses during sectionals. We are proud of you and how far you came. We wish the seniors luck in their future and are excited to see how the underclassmen improve for next year!
Soccer isn't over at GHS. Garrett will host the IHSAA Boys Soccer Regional tournament on Thursday and Saturday this week. In game #1 -- Lakeland will face the #1 state ranked Canterbury soccer team at 5pm. Game #2 will see the Bishop Luers team face Lakewood Park. That game will start at about 7pm. The championship game will be held at Garrett on Saturday Night at 7pm. We will see some great soccer at the "Pitch" in Garrett. Good Luck to all the teams!

VB Tourney at Whitko!
The Girls VB team went into the Whitko Tourney a little down from the ACAC Tourney. But, they battled to defeat Prairie Heights, North Miami, and Columbia City to make it to the Championship game. The Lady Railroaders met the cross County rival Lady Barons and were defeated in 2 games, 17-25 and 21-25. We might have played our best games earlier in the day and didn't play our best in the championship.
The Lady Railroaders have one week to prepare for the Sectional Tournament. They will face West Noble at Senior Night on Monday, travel to Whitko on Tuesday, and then travel to Napolean, Michigan to take on Coach Richardson's High School team next Saturday. All of these games will help prepare us for the tough sectional tournament at Bishop Dwenger.
We are a good team and facing the tough competition will do us good. Even in the defeat today, we are working toward the goal of a sectional championship. Good Luck Coach Richardson and the VB team as they head to the IHSAA tournament.

Mighty MO!
WELL, Not sure where to start! We lost 42-14 to a Leo team with 26 seniors!
Football is a strange game of momentum swings. Leo dominated the first quarter with big plays and great defense. They led 13-0. Then Garrett had a great come back scoring to make it 13-7 on a Todd Frickey TD. Then on the next defensive series we manhandled the Lions. We dropped them deep in their territory and got the ball back on the Leo 25 yard line. We were dominating them and the momentum was all our way. Then one play changed the game. We fumbled a pitch. Todd pounced on it but it squirted out and Leo recovered it. They ran the ball back for a 74 yard TD. GAME! After that we couldn't stop them. It was 32-7 at halftime. We had a terrible first series and they scored easily to make it 39-7. We kind of lost our composure. Leo showed a lot of class by running double tight, kicking a field goal, and putting their JV in at the quarter. We scored to make it 42-14 and the game was over.
I think we need to put that one out of our mind and concentrate on Heritage and Senior Night. Finally, we get to play at home. It will have been 2 days short of a month since we played at Memorial Field. We will bounce back and end the regular season with a win against the Patriots!

GSO in Sectional Finals!
The Girls Soccer team continues to defend the home turf by defeating West Noble 1-0. The amazing Lady Railroaders have turned around their season by focusing on Sectionals. In all fairness to this team, they have had countless injuries to overcome this season. They have continued to Battle and are now one win away from a Sectional Championship.
The Girls will face Westview in the championship game, Saturday Night at 7pm. Come out and support our girls in their quest for a Sectional Title.

Sad Soccer Night!
We played hard. We played smart. We played with passion. It just wasn't enough. The Garrett Boys Soccer team fell to Lakewood Park tonight in the first round of the IHSAA Sectional Tournament. The final score was 3-2. Garrett scored first and led the entire first half 1-0. Then we had a breakdown for about 11 minutes and LP scored 3 unanswered goals. With about 7 minutes left Garrett regained there composure and made the score 3-2. We had several chances in the last few minutes. We just couldn't get a score.
I am so proud of this team. They have certainly raised the standard for GHS Soccer. The most wins in a season. The first winning season. The first ACAC Conference Championship. All the way around they have been fun to watch. I ache for the seniors and had the opportunity to talk to them after the game. i wanted them to know the program has been built with their hard work. I talked to the under classmen and told them to remember this feeling and use it to work hard in the off season, particularly in the weight room. Congrats to the Coaching staff. What a great group of coaches we have. Our pride for this program is not just when we win. It is all the time win, lose, or tie!

Ups and Downs! Scoreboard!
The Boys and Girls Cross Country teams did a great job at the ACAC meet tonight. The Boys Team finished 2nd avenging a loss to Leo and only loosing to South Adams. Jaron Somers and Kendall Slabaugh BOTH were first team all-conference. Jaron finished 4th and Kendall finished 6th. The Girls Team finished 5th behind Leo, South Adams, Southern Wells, and Adams Central. Both Ariel McCoy and Amanda Stump were on the All-Conference 2nd team. With the 10th place finish Ariel McCoy was All-Conference all four years of her high school career. WOW! Congrats! Also Freshman Amanda Stump also earned All-Conference 2nd team honors by finishing in 9th place. Great Job Runners, now get ready for Sectionals!
The Volleyball team suffered 2 tough losses tonight against LEO, again. After leading in both games by 5 points we lost 26-24 and 25-23. Leo just has too many weapons! We might get another shot at them in Sectional. Maybe 3rd times a charm!
NOW FOR THE HEADLINE OF THE NIGHT!
The Garrett Girls Soccer team battled Central Noble tonight to end the regulation game tied 2-2. Then came two more halves of Overtime. The Score was still 2-2. Then the shoot out began and Garrett came out on top winning the first round sectional game. What an exciting night. That is only GHS's second win in the IHSAA Sectional tournament. Now the girls will face West Noble on Thursday Night at 5pm. Great work Coach Yarde and Lady Railroaders!
Tomorrow everyone needs to head to Hamilton to Support our Boys Soccer team as they challenge the tough Lakewood Park Soccer Team. I've got a great feeling about this team. Go Railroaders!

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (10-3-11) "Promoting education-based athletics in Indiana"
Do you know the rules of your sport? Are you aware of any rule changes from last year? Does your coach go over the changes with you?
In last year's PGA Championship, professional golfer Dustin Johnson was eliminated from a playoff because of a rules violation. He was aware of the rule but interpreted it incorrectly during the last hole of the match.
While your high school coaches are there to help you with the rules, it's your responsibility as a student-athlete to know them and how to apply them. Be sure you know the critical rules of your sport. It can only benefit you and your team!

CC Saturday! + Band Results
The Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams competed in the South Adams Small School Cross Country Invitational today in Berne. The girls finished 9th out of 22 teams but they were only 14 points out of 5th place. We ran well. Amanda Stump led the team with a 15th place finish but the Senior Leadersip of Ariel McCoy finished right behind her in 16th. Ariel is doing a great job pushing the young freshman. That always is a good thing for a CC team.. Other placers for the GHS was Jaron Somers in 6th, Kendall Slabaugh finished 24th. The boys were short a runner so they did not have enough to place a team.
I don't usually give middle school information, but my granddaughter who is an 8th grader at SA Finished 8th just behind Garrett's number one runner, Miranda Malcolm who finished 6th. Also placing for GHS Middle school girls was Raistlyn Lehman. She finished 13th. To give justice to the middle school boys, Garrett Middle Schools Micha Malcolm finished 12th. My Grand daughter is running in her first season and she is an amazing young lady, learning how to run. (I think I might be a little biased!)
We had no other teams competing today BUT, I do know the GHS Railroader Regiment placed at District and qualified for Regionals. Congrats to the Railroader Marching Regiment! We are proud of you. I don't have the details, but know they will move on!
