Losses are tough on everybody!

I don't take losses like I should. I am way to competitive for my own good. When we lose to a team that's better than us, I can deal with that. On Wednesday, we should have beaten South Bend St. Joseph. But, they were like us. If we played them 50 times, we would win our share. Leo, Dekalb, Angola are all good teams. There's no shame in getting beat by a good team. The loss tonight was not one of those losses. As I was cleaning up after the game, Coach Clifford said the same thing. He hates to lose. Wether he's playing, coaching, or watching, he hates to lose.

The 4-11 New Haven Lady Bull Dogs out played the Lady Railroaders tonight and defeated us on our home floor 37-33. It was our 5th loss and New Havens 5th win. Neither team shot the lights out tonight. New Haven shot only 33% but the Lady Railroaders only shot 21% for the game. The only good news of the night is we only had 8 turnovers. But, we couldn't make a layup, or any other shot for that matter, if our lives depended on it. We only shot 58% from the Free Throw line.

It's going to take some time to forget about this one. Really, I hope we don't forget about it. We're a good team. But, if we don't play the game at our level of talent, ANYONE CAN BEAT US! I remember a sectional game a few years ago where we almost got beat by a team we were clearly better than. WE had to pull off the win with a little luck. Tonight, we didn't play well and we lost to a team we're clearly better than. We didn't get lucky this time.

So, what do we do now? It's up to the players and coaches. Every  win and every loss is a TEAM EXPERIENCE. Every player and coach own part of the loss tonight. Where do we go from here? We get our chance next Friday Night at home. Bluffton comes to the Bateman Gym.

Garrett Wrestling Results - Al Smith Tournament!

I just got the final results from the two day Al Smith tournament in Mishawaka. The Railroaders had a great tournament. As I've mentioned in the past, this tournament is one of the premier tournaments in the midwest and certainly the state. We have been waiting for quite some time to participate. Here is the information received from Coach Fielden and Caprino:

We finished 12th as a team, one point from 11th and even finished ahead of the state runner-up team from last year!  We had five placers and here is a recap of their tournament.
Hayden Lee 3rd Place at 106lbs
Hayden was seeded 3rd and finished 3rd.  He made it to the semi-finals where he lost in overtime.  He bounced back and won two matches to finish in 3rd place.
Austun McCray 7th Place at 132lbs
Austun was seeded 8th and finished above his seed.  He lost to the champion and battled him the whole match.  He was 4-2 for the tournament.
Kyle Lanning 8th Place at 152lbs
Lanning was unseeded and major decisioned the 7th seed in the second round.  He battled hard on the second day losing two close matches.
Austin Gibson 3rd Place at 195lbs
Austin had a great tournament going 6-1 and only losing to the champion by one point.  He was seeded 6th and beat many tough opponents including pulling out his last two victories in overtime.
Last but NOT least….
Travis Carunchia 5th Place at 220lbs
Travis entered the tournament unseeded and lost first round to the eventual champion.  He battled back on Wednesday winning FOUR straight matches just to advance to the second day.  He then went 2-1 today to finish in 5th place.  He went 6-2 on the tournament including FIVE pins!

That's quite impressive and we can be very proud of our efforts.

2011 Year End Review

I really enjoy writing this Blog for one reason. This Blog is a great testament to the quality student-athletes, coaches, and community we have at Garrett. I've had a little time over the past week to review some of posts on this Blog. I am thrilled this Blog is getting your attention. We've had over 10,000 page views in 2011. WOW! I can't believe it. Here's a review of our year:

2011 started with a bang or should I say with a "Shot heard round the area". The Lady Railroaders won another ACAC Championship at the Coliseum. But, this was one of the most exciting games I have ever witnessed. Here's a part of the post after the tournament:

What an amazing ACAC Championship game today at the Memorial Coliseum! Jordyn Knott gets an offensive rebound and buries a shot to take away another ACAC Championship from the Leo Lady Lions. The Lions came back from being down by 10 points to go ahead at the end of the ball game. Garrett brought down the ball and with 4.6 seconds left called a time out. Coach Dan Feagler tried to get the Ball to Megan Getts (tournament MVP) who had dominated the inside all day. She made a great shot but missed. Jordyn got the board and put it in with no time left on the clock. 5 hours later, my heart has finally started again.

The Railroaders took home all the hardware from the tournament. Megan Getts took home the MVP award with a very impressive performance. The Railroader Fans took home the Sportsmanship Award.

That was so much fun!

Brayden Moreau qulaified for the State Wrestling tournament and the Lady Railroaders won another Sectional Title in February.

The IHSAA presented the NEW Sectional alignments and GHS was moved up to Class 3A in Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Softball, and Baseball. The challenge will be great but our athletes and coaches have already proved up to the task.

The Spring was great for our teams. The Garrett Community hosted both the ACAC MIddle School and High School Track meets and had a great showing. The Boys won the championship and the Girls placed 2nd. It was a great night. Here is an excerpt from the Blog post:

WOW! What a great night for Garrett Track and the community of Garrett. The Boys Track team took 1st place in the ACAC track meet hosted at Memorial Field in Garrett. Coach Clifford, Coach Cutler, Coach Rhoades, and Coach Lapadot, can be exceptionally proud of this accomplishment. No one expected us to beat perennial powerhouse Leo. But, with Todd Frickey, Jaron Sommers, Drake Landes, Jamarius Mitchell, Robert Deventer, Matt Schultz and a host of others, scoring in nearly every event to defeat the Lions and the rest of the ACAC.

Coach Clifford has done a wonderful job in his first year as head boys track coach. He has stepped up the training and certainly has raised the bar of expectations. The team of Coaches work together so well and that family type atmosphere has yielded great results.

The girls took 2nd behind a dominate Leo Girls team. Jordyn Knott won the Long Jump by destroying and ACAC record of 17' 3.75" that stood since 1979. Jordyn jumped 17'8" and didn't even need her final 3 jumps to win the meet.  Heather House won both hurdle races. Jordyn also won the High Jump. Laura Moynahan won the shot put and also placed in the discus.

The Boys track team was not the only ACAC championship won by the Railroaders. The Boys Golf team won the ACAC Golf Tournament:

After being away from my computer last evening, I have to share in the Golf excitement at GHS.  The Railroader golf team had lost twice previously to Woodlan, but not on Saturday.............when it counted. After 9 holes on Saturday, the railroaders trailed Woodlan by 4 strokes and led Heritage by 2, Leo by 6. Coach Kleeman told Jacob Stafford to "Keep playing, it was going to be close. Don't think your score is not important." While it didn't come down to a tie, it was very close and when Number 4 golfer, Noah Getts turned in his card, everyone knew he was going to have to shoot under 95 to beat the Warriors. NO PROBLEM! After shooting a 165 on the front nine. The Railroaders stepped it up and shot 158 on the back 9 and won their first ever ACAC Golf Championship.

Bennett Rieke shot a great 70 for the day to take medalist honors. Cam Stockdale shot 79 to earn 4th place. Karsten Cooper shot 84 to earn 2nd team all-conference honors and Noah shot 90. The good news is, none of these great golfers are seniors, so everyone is back next season.

Golf season is just around the corner and our group of seniors are ready for another championship! For the 3rd year in a row Bennett Rieke Qualified for the Regional Golf Tournament.

Todd Frickey and Jordyn Knott placed at their respective track meets:

Our tracksters finished the season at the State meet yesterday and Friday. Todd Frickey and Jordyn Knott both placed at the IHSAA State Meet. Todd finished 8th in the 100m on Friday and Jordyn Finished 7th in Long Jump yesterday.  Jordyn has now placed in two events at the state meet in two consecutive years. Both her and Todd earned All-State Honors. We are exceptionally proud of their hard work. The Coaches have also put a lot of work in to make this a great season for our Track program. Garrett has such a great tradition of state qualifiers. In the past 10 years we have only had a couple years where we did not send someone to the State Meet.

The new school year brought some big changes at GHS while the construction began on our NEW HIGH SCHOOL. Even though alll GHS staff and students were looking forward to the future with a brand new building, the football team stepped back in time. The Dekalb vs Garrett Football rivalry was renewed on August 26th.

Rivalries can be ugly. Before our game last night I was talking the officiating crew about their experience with rivalries. They had some horror stories about fights and ugly games. NOT IN OUR HOUSE! Last night was a perfect example for the rest of the world how a rivalry can be positive.

Last night was one of the hardest hitting, well fought Football game, I have ever been to. We did have one unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Dekalb. Not to give an excuse, but it came at a time they were getting really frustrated. It was a battle in the trenches but it was a clean battle.

The best part of the night wasn't the awesome play of our line, the great catch and interception by Jamison Wisel, the 6 touchdowns and record for Todd Frickey, or the ending of a 35 year drought against the Barons. The best part of the night was the character displayed by our student section when they stormed the field. They actually waited for the traditional midfield handshake before the celebrated with our team. No one gave them instructions, not one set it up ahead of time. They did it on their own because they are awesome. Now I've committed  to Sundaes for these senior girls on Tuesday. It's worth it!

Todd Frickey and the GHS Football team set all sorts of records this season and ended with a great tournament run. The Jimtown Jimmies came out on top in the sectional championship game, but the Railroaders fought all the way to the end. The football team wasn't the only highlight for the fall season. The Volleyball team and the Boys Soccer Team both won regular season ACAC championships. Here are the posts celebrating those two programs:

Tonight the Volleyball team finished the ACAC Regular Season 6-1 and were in a 3 way tie on top of the ACAC. So, they are Co-Champions in the ACAC.  This is our first ACAC VB championship and our first conference championship since 1993. I guess we need another Banner!

Tonight they played a fantastic game, completely dominating a VERY good Heritage team, 25-17, 25-15, 25-12. We honored Jordyn Knott and Katie DePew before the game because of the records they have set this year. Katie DePew got her 1000th assist earlier in the season and Jordyn Knott got her 1000th kill last week. Both of these girls and senior Laura Moynahan have been major contributors to this program. Laura is close to breaking the single season record for digs (held by Katie Depew). Tonight all of these girls played with a lot of passion and never lost the momentum tonight!

We are so proud of these girls and wish them the best in the ACAC tournament next week. Roll Big Train!

Here is the Soccer Post. This post is the most viewed post on the Athletic Blog. That tells me, people were pretty excited about this piece of history:

The Railroader Boys Soccer Team won it's first EVER ACAC Championship in convincing style tonight defeating the Leo Lions 2-1. As a matter of fact, no other team has won an ACAC Boys Championship except the Lions. What a game!

The Railroaders finished the ACAC season undefeated 4-0. I didn't score a goal. I didn't have an assist or a save, but I felt like I played the entire game and I am worn out. I think all the fans and all the coaches could say the same thing.

We got down in the first half 1-0. But, before the end of the half the Lions had a hand ball in the box. Nathan Sliger drilled the penalty kick and we were even going into halftime. The second half was dominated by the swarming Railroaders. We had opportunity after opportunity and then it happened. On a corner kick Kaleb Hoover had another opportunity and he put it in to go up 2-1. For the next 3 + minutes my heart was beating a hundred miles per hour and I didn't dare take a breath. We had great defense and focus tonight and we held on to get the big win.

I have never seen the Soccer Coaches so focused and I couldn't be more proud of the staff Doug has put together. James Degitz and Matt Cordes have been through the trenches with this program. Austin Freels comes with a lot of experience and Joe Silva has worked hard with our middle school program. They all deserve a piece of the victory. I couldn't be more proud of our kids. They deserve this so much. I get chills when kids that work hard get rewarded for all their efforts. We keep telling them just to keep working hard. But, you always wonder when they are going to see the fruits of that work. Tonight was the night. I am thrilled to be there, to be part of history. GREAT WIN RAILROADERS!

The Boys and Girls Cross Country programs were represented by a great couple of senior athletes. Ariel McCoy and Jaron Somers both qualified again for the IHSAA regional meet. Both of these runners have been very important to the success of our Cross Country teams during the past 4 years.

The Winter Season began early in November with some new faces. Legendary Coach Dan Feagler retired from the Girls Head Basketball Coaching position after 16 years and a very successful career. Bob Lapadot, the long time assistant, took over the helm and the quality girls basketball program continued.  Bob and his team have an 8-4 record with one more game to play before the break. All four losses have come to very good programs and we have nothing to be ashamed of.

The Boys Basketball team has a great start to their season with only 2 losses. John Bodey and his staff are well on their way to a great season. They are a fun team to watch and the coaching staff has really come together to improve this program.

The wrestling team has struggled early in the 2011-2012 season. But,  the coaching staff continues to make improvements and we are looking forward to the season tournaments. One of those tournaments is the First Ever Railroader Invite. This tournament will take place after the first of the year and will feature 10 schools with great wrestling programs.

Well, that's it in a nutshell. I am so proud of our Athletic Programs at GHS. We continue to be a leader in the ACAC and our area. We have great student-athletes, coaches, parents, and community support. I can't wait to see what successes we have in  2012.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

Gotta Finish!

The Lady Railroaders got a slow start tonight vs SB St. Joe. At halftime they trailed by 5, 30-25. But we came out strong in the 3rd Quarter and had a one point lead. The 4th quarter was back and forth with the Indians holding a 2 point lead 47-45 with just under a minute to play. The Lady Railroaders pulled down an important rebound and it looked like we would have a chance to tie the game again. After grabbing the rebound, we turned the ball over. That was the story for the night. The Lady Railroaders had 20 turnovers to just 10 for the visiting team. The last minute consisted of fouling and forcing shots to try to get the game back. With less than 20 seconds we had the lead down to 3 points. We had a couple looks. We just couldn't get them to fall. The final score was 53-47.

Besides the 20 turnovers, the Lady Railroaders had a pretty good night. Offensively we shot 20- of - 31 for 65%. SB St. Joe was 18 of 43 for only 47% . The Railroaders led in rebounds and free throw shooting.

Brandi Dawson and Katie Depew both had 16 points. Becca Oliver had 9. Becca also led the team with Laura Moynahan with 7 rebounds each.

The Lady Railroaders will host New Haven this Friday Night. JV begins at 6pm. Good Luck Ladies!

Girls Second Half Begins Tomorrow!

The Girls Basketball team starts the second half of their season with 2 Holiday games this week. The first game is tomorrow night vs South Bend St. Joseph High School. The game was added to the schedule after St. Joe lost a game when their football team was in the state championship football game. The game will be hosted by the Railroaders. BUT, the game will start an hour early to give St. Joe an earlier arrival at home after the game. The JV game will begin at 5pm NOT 6PM. So, the Varsity game should begin at about 6:30pm.  The Garrett Lady Railroaders and South Bend St. Joseph's are both 8-3. This will be a real good game for the Lady Railroaders to get going before the conference tournament.

On Friday, the Lady Railroaders will host New Haven High School. New Haven is 4-7 on the season. This game will start at the regular 6pm start time in the Paul Bateman Gym.

Come out and cheer on the Lady Railroaders as the season heads toward conference and state tournament!

How to be a positive leader!

This article was written for business, but it can fit many situations. It applies to teaching, coaching, and leading as a member of a team. If you just think about your own situation in life and apply the ideas. See what happens!

Please click on the link below and read about how to be a positive leader

3%20Ways%20to%20Be%20a%20Positive%20Leader

It doesn't matter if you're a player, coach, teacher, administrator, parent, or student, you can learn from this simple concept.

Thanks Coach Frickey!

At Monday's school board meeting, Ron Frickey's resignation as Head Football Coach was accepted by the GKB School Board. Ron has indicated he still has the fire and desire to coach football. But, as Todd finalizes his plans for college, Ron felt he would not be able to dedicate the time required of a Head Coach. It is expected that Todd will play College Football starting this fall. Todd has had several offers and is weighing all his options before he makes his decision.

Ron's overall record at Garrett was 38-27 in 6 seasons. He ends a 31 year career in coaching. He won a sectional Championship at Columbia City in 1993 and an ACAC Championship with the Railroaders in 2007. The last two years he coached Garrett to the Sectional championship game each of those years.

After Andy Thomas resigned in July of 2006. Coach Frickey was hired just one week before the season began. I'm not sure our community appreciates how difficult that was for a coach. With Coach Frickey's prior experience, he made the transition nearly seamless for his players and coaching staff.

We are so proud to have had Ron as our coach over the last 6 years. He truly has a heart for ALL kids, not just football players. He has a way of working with kids who "live on the edge". Many coaches can't deal with these kids. But, Ron always worked with them and gave them many chances to succeed. Ron has also been a key to the success of our weight lifting program. He has helped so many of our teams implement the Bigger Faster Program so our athletes get the most out of their training.

He has been the driving force in developing our FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes)and is the leader of our School Spirit group.

Although Ron is resigning as Head Coach, he will remain a key part of our Administrative team as Assistant Principal. He also has offered his services to whoever our next head coach will be. He loves football and kids. I am sure he will continue to be a great asset to our athletic program.

Thanks Coach Frickey for all your work as our football coach!

All's well that ends well!

That is certainly true about the Garrett vs Angola game tonight in the Bateman Gym. The score was tied 6-6 at the end of the first quarter. Coach Bodey was not going to let the result be the same as our Fremont game. His determination and constant "Prodding" of the Railroaders turned things around with a good second quarter. Garrett ended the half with a 25-21 lead. The defense really picked up, holding the Hornets to just 15 second half points and the boys had 36. Really if you look at the first, third, and fourth quarters Garrett held Angola to under double digits each quarter.

We didn't have a great shooting night, (just like at Fremont), but our defense was solid and carried us to the final score of 61 - 36. We only shot 37% from the field. However, we held Angola to only 25% shooting. Garrett was a great 19-21 from the charity stripe. Neither team turned the ball over. Garrett had only 7 turnovers and Angola had 11.  The Railroaders had 3 players in double figures. Drake Landes had 17 points, Logan Casselman had 12 points, and Todd Frickey had 10. Drake and Todd both had 5 rebounds.

The Railroaders head to Christmas Break with a great 5 wins and 2 losses. Coach Bodey and the team will take a few days off to enjoy the Christmas Holiday before getting ready for Central Noble on January 5th. That game will also be home in the Bateman Gym.  Go Railroaders!

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (12-19-11)

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (12-19-11)
"Providing education-based athletics in Indiana."

Would your classmates and teammates describe you as acting mature or immature for your age?  How would your teachers and coaches respond?  How would a referee or an official evaluate your maturity during a game?

The immature student-athlete cares primarily about their own existence.  The thought of others rarely enters their mind.

The mature student-athlete treats everyone, regardless of their position or title, with respect and dignity.

Maturity will help you in the classroom, on the playing field, and in your local community.  You have complete control in how quick you can make that happen!

This past week has been pretty busy at GHS. We've had late nights on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. BUT, the end of 2011 is just around the corner. We have only a few more home events until we can take a little break, rejuvinate our bodies and dedicate time to Family!

Below is the up coming schedule for the week:

Tuesday, December 20th -- The Boys Freshman, JV, and Varsity teams will host Angola on Tuesday Night right here at GHS. The JV and Freshman teams will tip-off at 6pm. The Freshman will once again play in the middle school gym. While the JV will take up residence in the Bateman Gym.

Most of the teams will be taking some time off over the next couple of weeks. After Tuesday, our next home event is not until December 28th when the Girls Basketball team will host South Bend St. Joseph High School.

Have a very Merry CHRISTMAS and a joyous NEW YEAR. Thanks for all your support in 2011!

Wrestlers get 3 wins at Carroll!

The Railroader Wrestling team got 3 big wins today at The Carroll Wretling Super Dual. Garrett defeated Northrop (42-35), Eastside (57-18), and Elkhart Central 47-30. Our only losses came at the hands of Churubusco (48-24), and the host Chargers (56-21).

Individually for the Railroaders Hayden Lee went undefeated on the day along with Austun McCray and Travis Carunchia. Travis had 4 out of 5 pins today and really had a good day based on the very tough competition. Hayden Lee had 3 pins to go with two forfeit wins. Austun McCray also had 3 pins to go with a forfeit and a decision.

This team continues to improve and it is great to see a successful day against some future Sectional / Regional and Semi-State opponents.

Girls 1st Half Season ends with Win!

The Girls Basketball team ended the first half of the 2011-2012 Season with a great victory over South Adams. The girls team (8-3) won tonight by the final score of 74-31 against the Lady Starfires.  The Railroader girls program has never lost to a South Adams girls team and that continued tonight. Every person on the varsity bench contributed to the outcome and all should be happy with their playing time. Brandi Dawson had 30 points and made 65% of her shots. She really looked relaxed out there. SA didn't have anyone to guard her. Jordyn Knott was also a tough matchup for SA. She had a double double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Really the game was never in question. But, the Railroaders played a great first half, shooting 63% compared to 14% from the field for SA. That's great defense and great offense to back it up. The second half was a lot closer for the Lady Starfires who shot 33% to Garrett's 36%. The Starfires also matched the Lady Railroader point total in the fourth quarter.

These games are tough on coaches, officials, and parents. Coaches always worry about "blow outs" and how to win with class while not embarrassing the opponent. They also worry about playing Varsity players and having them get hurt when the game is under control. Officials worry about trying to be fair and consistent while allowing the mismatched teams play the game. Parents on both sides have completely different views of the progress of the game. I am proud of our coaches and players for how they handle themselves in victory and defeat. Great work Lady Railroaders!

Mathematically we can beat them!

The Boys Basketball team was defeated by a very good Leo team tonight in a shoot out by the final score of 99-84. But we should have won the game and I can prove it..............Mathematically. Ok, please don't make any comments about me being a geek. It doesn't hurt my feelings to be called a geek. I have a Bachelors degree in Mathematics and I love Statistics. So call me a nerd, I don't care.

We are as good as Leo! We both shot 44% from the field. We shot 67% from the line. They shot 55%. We out Rebounded them by 1 in offensive rebounds and by 7 on Defensive rebounds. We shot 36% from the 3 point line and they shot 37%. When people were leaving the game, they were in AWE of a team that can score 99 points in High School Basketball. I think I just proved mathematically we are as good as they are. BUT, they scored 15 more points than we did. So how did we lose? TURNOVERS, TURNOVERS, TURNOVERS!  The Railroaders had 24 turnovers. That's where we lost the game. OK, so back to Math!

If we cut our turnovers in Half (which is still too many). We have 12 more possessions. If we hit shots on half of those, we gain 12 more points. That puts us within 3 points. I don't know how many points they had off of turnovers. BUT, I would bet it was a whole lot more than 3! WE WIN!

Being a Math Teacher you can make numbers show alot of things. But, I am convinced this Great Leo team is no better than our GREAT TEAM. We get the chance to face them again in the ACAC tournament. If we can reduce those turnovers, WE WILL WIN!

ACAC Tournament Draw

Today the ACAC kicked off the 89th Boys and 38th Girls Basketball tournament with the Tournament Draw held in Decatur at the Back Forty Restaurant. In attendance were all the ACAC Coaches, Athletic Directors, Administration, and local media.  This tournament is the oldest tournament in the state of Indiana, second only to the IHSAA tournament. The Boys tournament has been won by 19 different schools including schools that no longer exist. The Boys have never won the ACAC tournament. It's time we did!  The girls tournament has been won by 7 different schools including the 3 times by the Lady Railroaders.  This tournament is great for our schools, our players, our coaches, and our  communities. Hilyard Gates was a key leader of this tournament when the championship game was played live on wkjg tv. We recognize Hilyard Gates with our MVP awards for  the tournament. The Allen County Sheriff's department also is a key sponsor of the ACAC Tournament Sportsmanship Award.   We love this tournament. Even the draw is a big part of the history of this tournament and the draw today was completed much as it was in its inception. So here is our road to the ACAC Championship!

Tuesday Night, January 10th the Railroaders will travel to Leo High School to take on the Lions. The Girls will tip-off at 6pm followed by the Boys game at approximately 7:45pm.

The Girls winner will play at the Allen County Memorial Coliseum on Wednesday Night vs the Winner of the South Adams vs Woodlan game.  The Lady Railroaders would play at approximately 7:45pm.

The Boys also would play the winner of the Woodlan/South Adams game on Thursday at the Coliseum. Start time would be approximately 7:45pm.

The Championship games will be played on Saturday. The Girls will play at 10am and the Boys game would follow at noon.  Good Luck to all the teams as we prepare for the Tournament!

ACAC Wrestling Quad Results

Tonight the Railroaders hosted the Quad wrestling meet in the Bateman Gymnasium. The meet featured 3 dual meets for each school with the Railroaders facing Southern Wells, Woodlan, and Adams Central.

The wrestlers soundly defeated Southern Wells, 54-27. We were defeated by Woodlan, 39-36, in a very close match. Then we were defeated by a very good Adams Central Team, 62-10. Austun McCray went 3-0 along with Hayden Lee. One of the most exciting mtaches of the night was Zack Helton pinning Travis Normand with 10 seconds left in the match. This match kept us in the hunt against Woodlan.

Great work wrestlers and good luck at Carroll on Saturday. The wrestlers will also wrestle over the Christmas break when they wrestle at the Premier tournament in the state at the Al Smith Classic in Mishawaka. That tournament is a two day tournament on December 28th and 29th.

Nice Win!

It's never easy to win on the road and in Boys Basketball it's even harder to win on the road in the middle of the week. The Railroader crowd was a little thin at Bellmont, but the Boys defeated the Braves 62-58 tonight in Decatur. (Really it was 62-55 but a Bellmont player hit a 3/4 court 3 pointer at the buzzer to make it 58 points)

The team really played one of their best games of the year both defensively and offensively. The Railroaders were a major disruption to the Braves and never really let the hosts get into any kind of offensive rhythm. Yet, the Railroaders had a great night on offense with 4 players in double figures. Drake Landes got back on track after a tough game on the road last week at Fremont. He led the team with 16 points. Brandon Porter had an equally impressive night with 15 points. Joe Martin also got back on track with 14 points and the surprise of the night was Todd Frickey with 13 points. 11 of those points came in the first half. When Todd can hit shots, it really opens things up for the rest of the team.  We were out rebounded tonight because Bellmont had a serious height advantage. But we forced a lot of turnovers with our pressure and the Braves didn't get too many clean shots.

The Boys team ends 2011 with two home games starting on Friday night when we host the Leo Lions. Then on Tuesday, the boys host Angola. Coach Bodey and the team will get a little time off before we start back again in January.

NOTE : Tomorrow is the ACAC tournament Draw. The draw is at 12:30 in Decatur. I will post the results of the draw as soon as I can. Everyone needs to pray hard for hosting the first round. We have never hosted the first round and we usually have to travel to South Adams or Southern Wells. WE WANT TO PLAY AT HOME!

Girls Outlast Fremont!

It wasn't a great offensive night for either team. But, the Lady Railroaders defeated Fremont 36-33 tonight at Fremont. Garrett shot 39% and Fremont 29% from the field. The Free throw shooting was also close with Garrett shooting 69% to 63% for the Lady Eagles. Fremont committed fewer turnovers but the Railroaders dominated the boards with 27 rebounds to 18 for the Eagles.

Brandi Dawson led the team with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Jordyn Knott had 9 points and 5 rebounds. Katie DePew had 7 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals.

The team hosts South Adams in an ACAC matchup on Saturday in the Bateman Gym.

The ACAC Draw will be held on Thursday afternoon in Decatur. The Railroader Basketball teams will hope to draw the first round of the tournament at home The tournament will takes place on January 10th, 2012. Good Luck Teams!

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (12-12-11)

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (12-12-11)
"Promoting education based athletics in Indiana."

Duke University basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski has stated more than once that when injuries happen to someone on his team, it's an opportunity for a teammate to step in and show that he/she is prepared to perform.

No player enjoys getting an opportunity because someone else gets hurt.  However, injuries are a part of any sport.

Be ready when you get your chance, whether it comes as the result of an injury to a teammate or because of your hard work during practice.  It just might be your time to shine!
