IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week (12-12-11)
"Promoting education based athletics in Indiana."
Duke University basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski has stated more than once that when injuries happen to someone on his team, it's an opportunity for a teammate to step in and show that he/she is prepared to perform.
No player enjoys getting an opportunity because someone else gets hurt. However, injuries are a part of any sport.
Be ready when you get your chance, whether it comes as the result of an injury to a teammate or because of your hard work during practice. It just might be your time to shine!

I agree with that comment. You never know when you will be given a chance. What happens though to players that give it their all in practice, shows major improvement, and is enthusiastic about playing? Why wouldn't every player be given that shot to play? This is high school not the NBA. Every player should be given that chance to shine at every game.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment. I am so glad High School Sports are NOT the NBA. At GHS we believe in teaching kids through athletics. One of the lessons all students will need to learn is Hard Work and dedication will get rewarded. We have many examples at GHS where players have gotten very little playing time throughout their careers, but as upper classmen, they were rewarded for their efforts. It's a joy in this job to see that happen My favorite example at our school is Ryan Marshall. He stuck with it and never gave up. In the end he was able to shine as a great example for all of our athletes. He never complained, always did what the Coach asked, and EARNED his spot on the floor. Although it would be great to get every player in at every game, that' may not be practical. However, a coach owes it to every player to make sure they feel just as valuable as the "superstar" on the team. Whether they play or not, they ALL contribute to the success of the team.
